So, uh, Mara, I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and, uh, will you, maybe, marry me?

Mara stops dead in her tracks. She is in shock.
MARA
Um... I, uh..
Mara struggles to verbalize her response but it is clear that this not what she wants. James defends his question.

MARA

Ruth looks betrayed. She grabs Mara's hand.
RUTH
You're my best friend, Mara, but are you crazy?
Mara meets Ruth's worried but affectionate gaze. For a moment they cannot look away. Their gaze leaves something unsaid.
Suddenly, Ruth drops Mara's hand and they step away from one another.
The Pastor approaches them.
MARA
Uh, hey Dad.
Her Dad, the Pastor, nods in disapproved acknowledgement of Ruth's presence.
PASTOR
Your mother's waiting for us.
He leads Mara away.
