Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills. From a very young age, writing has been a passion of mine. Through writing I have developed an understanding of my personality and learning capabilities. One of the main components to my personal learning style is the necessity of writing. I have a strong need and urge to write everything down. While some students learn well in a lecture environment, extensive note taking is often required for me to retain any information. Written notes also correspond with the visualization and tactile elements of my learning abilities. Having something tangible at my disposure is the easiest way for my personality to respond to the material. According to my score on the “Pathways to Learning” (Carter, Bishop, Kravits, 2002) assessment, I am highly developed in the Intrapersonal Intelligence. Both my written and visual...
The capability of a person varies from each and every one. Some people can grasp easily but for some it may take time to get information to the mind. the learning styles are divided on the abilities of a person, how he grasps, how he understands the subject, is he capable of listening style, doing style or writing or reading style. In an environment were technology and studies have great importance, the way how a person understands things are widely important. The complex manner in which, and conditions under which, learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store, and recall what they are attempting to learn (James & Gardner, 1995). There are poor learners, quick learners, and theoretical learners. There is no person who can’t learn anything, some might learn theories, some might learn through practices and some learn by seeing what the work is. Through the reflective analysis my passion for learning comes in through reflective style of learning. reflector style of learning is way of learning through reflecting others work in to our practice i.e., we carefully look on to what a professional learner does and get an idea of what he
I am writing this essay about learning styles. More notably I will write about my personal learning style. Also a quick idea of why I chose to go back to school to seek a degree. There are multiple learning styles out in the world audible, tactile, and visual. Audible learning style focuses on learning by listening and sound patterns. Visual learning focuses on learning by using pictures, drawings, shapes, paintings and sculptures. Tactile or kinesthetic learning style focuses on learning by a more hands on approach using gestures, touching, body movement, positioning and object manipulation. I am a tactile and visual learner and in the next paragraph I will discuss these findings.
For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed writing. Writing is an opportunity for me to express my thoughts and feelings while helping me grow to understand who I am as an individual, a student and furthermore, a future teacher. Yet, if someone were to ask me how I do it, I am afraid I could not give him or her a clear and precise answer. Trying to find that answer almost seems harder for me than the actual writing process itself. However, after having done my student teaching last semester, I have learned that modeling my own writing for the students not only helps them to see more clearly how I write, but helps me understand how I write as well.
A big component of my learning style is hands-on experience; learning while doing. This usually involved someone with more experience instructing me as I performed the task. Through the hands-on approach, I picked-up the knowledge and gained proficiency as I went along. My learning style also involved standard classroom instruction, which usually meant listening to lectures and taking notes. My note taking was not the best so in order to make up for what I lacked in note taking, I would read the textbooks repeatedly until I understood what I was reading. I learned that in order for me to get a complete understanding from my readings and notes, there had to be a lot great deal of repetition ...
In the early 80s, the concept of social intelligence resurfaces under the theory of multiple intelligences presented by Howard Gardner in which interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences were included. Interpersonal intelligence was defined as having the ability to understand the feelings of others, whereas intrapersonal intelligence focuses on understanding one’s own emotions (Cartwri...
My preferred learning style is the “How”. In order for me to learn or memorize new skills, concepts, or techniques, I have to do them myself. By putting the things that I’m learning to work, I can discover how difficult a skill may be. I will be able to point out and pay attention to possible mistakes or errors that I’m likely to make when I have to use that skill in the real world. Knowing our weaknesses is a crucial part in the learning process. One of my weaknesses is that I don’t have the greatest memory; my preferred learning style has been a huge help in this regard. By doing, I’m less likely to forget what I have learned and even if I do forget, I will not forget as much information as when I learn using other methods. One other important benefit I get from trying things out is the fact that this method gives me the answers to the tens of questions that I may have when learning something. Simply, trying and implementing a concept or a theory is the proof that I always strive to obtain, because when it comes to believing in something, I have to see that something in action in order to believe in it, otherwise, I will always have ...
Each person has their own type of learning style. A learning style is a method in which each of us utilizes to better understand material. A preferred learning style is a style in which the person can learn best, reflecting their strengths and weaknesses of the individual. In order to understand material we take it all in with our senses, through sight, sound, touch, smell or taste. Multiple Intelligence theory maintains that there are at least seven learning styles (“intelligences”): interpersonal, intra-personal, body/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, mathematical/logical, verbal/linguistic and musical/rhythmic (Lazear, D.1991). For the purposes of this paper I will simplify the seven categories into three main categories in which people best learn information: auditory, visual and tactile/kinesthetic. Most people possess the ability to use all three learning styles but learn best using one specific learning style.
Methods like experiments, field trips or role play are rarely used. Because of that, labs and tutorials are more essential for these learners. Among the methods that can help these learners are by trying to use all the senses in the learning process because the more senses you use the higher recall will be, as you have many clues. In addition, make notes with several examples for each concept and use your own examples, the more personal examples you create, the better you remember. A very important thing to note is that this questionnaire is not designed to predict the ability of someone to make the diagnosis.
People use their senses to well coordinate their learning skills such as listening and watching. The way you can take in information can come in the following learning styles, visual kinesthetic and auditory. A visual learner is someone who can best take in information by the use of photographs and charts. Kinesthetic learners also referred to as tactile learners enjoy learning new things, doing activities, but struggle to maintain themselves still. An auditory learner is easily distracted and struggles to follow written instructions. They improve in holding and maintaining information as they are listening. A learning style is an own preference used by individual in order to help remember or catch the point of the information given.
As a newborn, babies are born with under developed brains in order for the baby to fit through the average human birth canal. Instantly they begin learning and retaining information they need to survive. After just a few minutes they learn to touch, smell, hear and cry. So why is it so much harder for adults to retain information like they did at such a young age? This is a question I have been asking myself for many years, and I believe that learning the different learning styles may help me and my classmates with our future. Some types of learning styles I was tested on included kinesthetic, visual, and aural. Below, I will discuss the different types of learning styles, how I scored based on the tests we had to take, and how I thought I
For the past week or so, we have been learning about the different types of learning styles in our Avid class.A few of the learning styles include visual, auditory, kinesthetic, oral, group and individual. The visual learning style is where one finds and learns better through the process of visualizing. For example, if an assignment is being discussed and not written one will find it difficult and won't catch on a well as an auditory learner will.Auditory learners will find it easier to learn when listening to what's going on. Where as a kinesthetic learner will find it difficult to learn the subject if listening.Kinesthetic learners will get a better grasp of the material if handed a model or being able to come in contact with the concept. When
“A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
According to Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory, referring to ways to knowing, I lean more towards Concrete Experience. I refer to my direct experience rather than thinking. “A Concrete Experience orientation focuses on being involved in experiences and dealing with immediate human situations in a personal way. It emphasizes feeling more than thinking” (“The Learning Style Inventory”, para. 6). This helps because I can get involved in the situation at hand. It also allows me the patience to deal with people. This especially comes in handy in my current occupation. I work in Technical Support, so I am constantly dealing and communicating with people. It is important to know how to efficiently communicate with the customers to obtain useful information
Wow! I have a personal learning style! If I had given any thought to my learning style prior to this course, I would have said simply, “Some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not.” Now I can say, “I am a grouper, a top-down learner, an owl, in the C-D quadrants, and my strong intelligences are linguistic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal”. What all this means, still, is some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not. But there I go again, simplifying the matter.
My Preferred learning strategies are almost similar to the identified learning strategies. Reading books, notes, making own notes always help to review during the time of exam. Always keep handouts and study from that. Another preferred method of learning is group discussion. Reading noted loudly help to memorize the information.
