My personal goal this semester was to get more hands on experience especially with doing medications. My goal was definitely achieved this semester with the help of Rose and the nurses I had the chance to work with. I got more confident in drawing up the medications I was doing and being a littler faster with the process of doing all my checks, where before it took me forever. Also learning how to use the Pyxis machine for the first time, since that was not a availability in our first clinical setting! I also got great opportunities to do multiple wound dressings, including one on an amputation. I really enjoyed being able to be more involved in the patients care on a more hands on basis then I was in previous clinical. Personal goals for
Nursing is something that cannot be simplified to one word or phrase; it is more than treating the ill and more than just a profession, rather it is a standard of care and service to others, and it is constantly evolving. Nursing should revolve around commitment and a desire to help those in need. As I reflect on my nursing education, I have realized that I have inadvertently created a set of values and beliefs for myself, otherwise known as my personal nursing philosophy. A product of my knowledge obtained from classroom lectures, my interactions with an array of patients, family members, and healthcare professionals at my clinical sites and my job in a long-term care facility. I believe each patient should be treated as an individual and given the best quality of care, regardless of their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious preference, socioeconomic status, or choices they may have made. Every patient is worthy of respect, even when their views differ from my own. Each patient has the right to honesty, and to feel safe.
My personal nursing philosophy is built upon my underlying Christian value system, united with the theory of Virginia Henderson, and an underlying holistic approach to patient care. By combining these elements, I have developed a philosophy that allows for an integrative approach in delivering patient services.
After graduating from nursing school with my associate degree, I began working as an emergency room nurse in a level one trauma center in East Texas. It has been 19 years now and I continue to work in emergency care. I now work in a smaller, yet still very busy emergency room. In the past, I have worked in many capacities, and now I am a staff nurse and work a peak hours shift, therefore I am busy the entire 12 hour shift, which I thoroughly enjoy. I precept new employees and students, and I am an instructor for TNCC. I care for patients that are critically ill or injured and also for those who only have minor complaints, and everything in between. I find satisfaction in caring for all levels of patients. Each patient no matter if their complaint is minor or life threatening they have come to me for help and I try and deliver the care they need. Emergency nursing is challenging in that there is always something new to learn and when you think you have seen it all, you will see something new. My relationships with my patients are brief, but I try and deliver the care that the patient needs as efficiently as possible. I feel it is important to interact with them, identify goals and react with care that will help them work towards the goals. If the patient is unable to identify their health goals due to illness then it is up to me to work with family and the physician to determine their goals.
A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.

Who am I? I would say I am a hardworking, dependable and committed individual I try my hardest in everything, even if I 'm not good at it or don’t know a thing about it. I was a Medical Assistant at Access Community Health Network for 5 years. It was a fast paced multi-physician family health center. It was challenging at times but very rewarding. I loved my job as a medical assistant and taking care of patients is what I truly loved doing. I consider myself to be a hardworking, intelligent, caring, and dedicated young women who aspires to someday be the best nurse possible. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience.
