I can remember the first day of school when I walked into Mrs. Mary Doe´s room and I wondered, “What am I going to learn this year?” Well, the answer to that question is a lot of information that will help me in the future, especially, how to make a great essay. This valuable information will take me into high school and beyond. This information is the roots of my writing that has made me greatly improved as a writer. This year I learned what kind of writing I like, how I write efficiently and fluently, and how I changed as a writer. One thing I learned in writing class this year is what I do that I am good and not good at writing. For instance, I learned what my strengths were. I have found out from the many pieces I have written that backing up my arguments with strong details, examples, and quotes has been something that I have been good at. I have realized this because I did really well on my community leader’s persuasive essay where you were to convince the leaders to use the money to what you think. I did a really good job and I realized that I was good at supporting. Maybe I should do speech and debate. Secondly, I found that I have some weaknesses. “Success is achieved by developing our strengths, not by eliminating our weaknesses.” This quote by Marilyn Savant is really what sums up writing abilities. I have never been able to write creatively, only informational. I have not yet developed the ability to combine those two to make it “fun” yet informational. Sometimes, my greatest strengths come from my weaknesses. Finally I have learning the type of writing I like the best. Persuasive and informational are the two types of writing that I excel in. I am a person who does not think outside of the box; I just focus on the f... ... middle of paper ... ...persuasive will be the best type of writing because, as I said before, I am good at being convincing and give people reasons to believe me. To sum it up, the ways I have changed in writing are how improved my writing, how I changed my view on writing, and how I believe I will do as a writer in the future. In conclusion, I learned many different things this year about my writing abilities, including what kind of writing I like, how to write efficiently and fluently, and the many ways I changed as a writer. When I walked into Mrs. Means language arts class, I was expecting it to be similar to last year, but with different material. I was totally wrong. I was challenged a lot in language arts to keep up with assignments and due dates. Most importantly though, I learned how to write a quality paragraph; something that will travel with me for the rest of my life.
There are various ways writers can evaluate their techniques applied in writing. The genre of writing about writing can be approached in various ways – from a process paper to sharing personal experience. The elements that go into this specific genre include answers to the five most important questions who, what, where, and why they write. Anne Lamott, Junot Diaz, Kent Haruf, and Susan Sontag discuss these ideas in their individual investigations. These authors create different experiences for the reader, but these same themes emerge: fears of failing, personal feelings toward writing, and most importantly personal insight on the importance of writing and what works and does not work in their writing procedures.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” –Nelson Mandela. Some people say that change is a bad thing, and some say that change is a blessing. Change is what makes us human. It is what enables us to grow wiser and stronger, and it is also what allows us to love, hate, and grow. I have grown so much since I have started the eighth grade in ways that I love, and ways that I have not yet recognized. I have learned and changed greatly throughout mathematics, science, and history, but I have learned the most about writing properly. Throughout the year, I have changed and recognized my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, my strategies and my progression, and what has caused change and the change to come.
Although, I was able to grow and improve as a writer this semester, I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn and room for me to continue growing using these techniques I’ve learned from this class. These academic techniques will help me in the future in my education, career and in life to be successfully educated wherever life takes me.
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
Throughout high school my experience as a writer fluctuated quite a bit. Over the years I took many different english classes which included General English, English Composition, Language Arts, and Adolescent Literature. Personally, I believe writing is an important part of education. Each class incorporates writing into their curriculum somehow, whether we were writing research papers, book reports, essays, or speeches.
Today, in the twenty-first century, it is not uncommon for a child to start writing essays, reports, or even journals for school work starting immediately after they are able to write full sentences. For me, this was not the case. As soon as I started to write letters I was trying everyday to form words, to complete fragments, and then eventually, full sentences. As a child for me, the idea of school was amazing. What could be better than going to a building to play with a bunch of kids your age and learning all kinds of new information, it was all so delightful. Ever since I was born, music has been one of the biggest influences on my life, in all aspects. This includes, but is not limited to the lyrics, the instruments, and the ability it
The first essay I ever wrote was hard for me to write. I didn’t know the first step of how to put a paper together. I would start writing and get frustrated that my ideas are not coming together.I knew what I wanted to say but my thoughts weren’t translating into the paper. Looking back on this class, I have realized just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the quarter I chose narrative analysis and arguments to show how much I improved this year and know my strength and weakness I had in this school year.
Over the semester, I have learned numerous things about myself as a reader and a writer. When I first began class, I did not know anything about writing an essay. I could not spell well nor tell you what a thesis was. As the semester went on, my communication skill has improved, my vocabulary has expanded, and my writing has improved greatly.
Over the first semester of my Composition I class, I have learned how to write various papers such as descriptive, example, definition, compare and contrast, and research. Along with learning how to write different types of essays, I have enhanced my writing skills in the past months. Three noticeable changes I have made in my writing includes condensing my ideas into more concise statements, my proofreading process, and modifying my writing process. Over the semester, I have greatly improved my writing skills.
Writing has been very difficult thing for me to do for a long time. All through school english and literature classes were a challenge to say the least. My thoughts were to avoid these classes but we all know and understand that was not possible. I identified my problem with writing a long time ago. I just didn’t like writing papers or essays. This created a bigger problem because it was required all through school.
Today we write more often, whether in school, at work, or on social networks. A writer is a person who uses written words in various styles and techniques to communicate ideas (Definition from Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Writer). As a writer I like to use social networks to writes post or comment on my friend’s status. I also enjoy writing on topics I like, without too many constraints on the organization of my writing. However I dislike formal writing.
When I was in elementary school, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. Reading and writing were challenging for me despite my comprehension being above grade level. Because reading and writing play a part in every subject of school, all of of my grades suffered; I would take almost twenty minutes to copy the warm-up from the board during math class. It also took me so long to read books, I had to use audio books in order to keep up with the class and participate in discussions. I would have stay up until midnight to make should I got all my homework in and understood it myself so I could keep up with my classes. As a result of my difficulties in school, I almost stayed back each year. However, I was lucky; I had parents who were willing to fight for me and made sure I received the support I needed because they believed in me.
Writing has always been a means of expression but also a skill to bring to the professional world. I have found my own writing skills improve naturally as I matured as an individual, however the leaps I made came from active experiences that directly tested my ability to write. This was mainly from academic sources where I had to mold my mind differently depending on the writing. I found this difficult as I was more focused on forming empirical analysis and I was unable to stay on topic. Although I had my difficulties, I am also thankful for exposing my weaknesses. By experience, I have improved in writing a lot from continuously reading and writing different forms of essays, all while improving my writing organization.
This class, English Composition I, has been an exceptional learning experience. The things that I learned and the little things that I have known before has bolstered in improving my writing skills. As I said earlier, writing has never been my strength, but now that I know few things, I can do a fair justice to the topic I am writing about.
