Perception of Self
Who knows you, better than you know yourself? If your answer is no one, then you probably have a good perception of self. Knowing yourself is a very important key in life. Self, is who you know you are as an individual. When you know who you are as an individual life becomes easier for you to handle and perceive.
The concept of self is divided into two categories which are the “I” and the “Me”. The “I” is your internal being, or that little voice in your head. “I” can also be described as who you are when you are alone and have no expectations from others to meet. “Me” is what you know about yourself and how others may identify you, such as; you name, your body, your normal temperament, and your family members. This is known as multiple selves. I have a school self and a family self. I also have multiple school selves and multiple family selves. My school selves ae; student, and classmate. Some of my family selves are; mom, aunt, sister, and daughter. When I’m around my teachers, I act different than when I’m around my classmates alone. For example, I walk into Dr. Muhammad class and I see he is not there, I talk to my classmates and pull out my cell phone and text, then I see him coming in I immediately put my phone up and be quiet. I might use different terminology or body language depending on what I think someone expects from me at the time. That is how you create different self-identities. It’s easy to switch between the multiple selves that you may have, and most people do it without noticing. Sometimes people lose their self and make new selves, without realizing it, this is known as multiple personalities. Multiple personalities is when the little “me” voice in your head doesn’t know who it is. This can be very confusing and will cause a person who suffers from this illness to question their self and all their abilities all the time. Having multiple
In the real life, it is hard to judge our personal identity: we are aware of who we are every second and minute, we also are able to check our appearance that we have known since we were born from looking at mirror. We know “I am myself” all the time.
What does sense of self-mean? It means what that person sees when they look in a mirror. Whether it is a decent, awful or an indifferent image. Everyone’s self-image is different, and that’s acceptable; normal even. No one person is exactly the same. The authors explain how a sense of self is like internal conflicts and the decision to lie in order to gain approval.
...l, our self-concept is multi-dimensional. We have three ways of perceiving ourselves, the private me, the ideal me, and the public me. The private me, is the way that we believe ourselves to be. The ideal me, is how you desire yourself, who you wish you were. Lastly, there is the public me, the way that we present ourselves in public, the face that we try to show others. Ego boosters and Ego busters affect us in everyway possible and affect the way we perceive ourselves to the world we live in.

In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.
Erik Erikson composed a theory of psychological development that was composed of eight stages. Erikson’s theory focuses on how personalities evolve throughout life as a result of the interaction between biologically based maturation and the demands of society. According to Erikson, “Each stage of human development presents its characteristic crises. Coping well with each crisis makes an individual better prepared to cope with the next.” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 314) According to Erikson’s eight stages of development, I have only been through six of the eight stages.
Throughout our lives we are shaped and molded by our friends and family. They have a lasting affect that can shape our mind and our self. Self is determined by the combination of selves that surround a person on a daily basis. From the childhood friends that we try so hard to hang on to as we journey farther and farther into the real world, to the hated boss and teachers that haunt our mind as we lie awake in our beds at nighttime, we are a product of all those selves. It is the self that determines the course of actions that are taken. Our Actions offer a window into our selves. The actions or reactions toward tragedies, celebrations, disappointments and the occasional lucky break all reflections of our self. Every one of us has a different self, because no one knows the exact same people as someone else. I believe our self contains our values and beliefs. All of our priorities, goals and aspirations we have for ourselves stem directly from the self. Our reactions are also a window into our self. In my opinion, self is a giant jigsaw-puzzle. It is filled with different pieces of others selves that we have interacted with throughout our life, that combine to make one big picture, our self. I have taken pieces of many people who I have encountered throughout my life. My three older brothers influenced major pieces of my self. The pieces of their selves have "fit" into my jigsaw-puzzle self, and complete my total picture. Without force, or a conscious effort by my brothers, the certain pieces of their selves have naturally configured to form my self.
We tend to try to understand our self and how we are as a person then we try to act and behave accordingly as to whom we are and this concept is called self-concept. This is our idea of which we are our understanding of our self (Mcleod, 2008). This composes of our belief about our self, our attitude and behavior and our opinion as how we are supposed to behave and how we really behave (Feenstra, 2011). As for me, my self-concept is that I am a worrier and I said this because I always end up telling other people about my worries so I share it with them. This is very different with my friend who always keeps her taught to herself and stays aloof all the time. Then aside from our self-concept, we also have what we call our self-schema. Self-schema is the way we look at ourselves hence it can be associated with what we liked to do. My self-schema is that I am a gardener because I love working on my garden. Every time I see something about gardening, I can easily associate myself with it because of my self-schema hence my behavior shows how I perceive myself. Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
We are more than our identities. To know your inner self is to know your purpose, your values, your goals, and your motivations. Aligning with your inner thyself. Knowing your inner self comes from self-awareness, having a clarity of your inner self opens the consciousness and set up a solid focus in self-actualization. Referring to the need of personal growth and development that exists throughout their life cycle. Hi, my name is Rob Geis and I am currently in grade 12. I have been at County High School for a year now; I joined at the start of 11th grade, and have thoroughly enjoyed myself here. The school is great, the people are fantastic and the atmosphere is one that makes you actually want to go to school. Before I joined ASB I was studying at the Singapore American School for two years and prior to that I was at the International School of Kuala Lumpur for two years. I was born and raised here in Bombay city and grew up here.
As I read through the Thinking Philosophically box in our text, the first question that comes up is, “What is a self?” It is wonderful to start off with an easy question, right? Well, Wikipedia defines the self as the subject of one’s own experience of phenomena: perceptions, emotions, thoughts ("Self," 2014). A standard dictionary definition is a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action; and a person’s particular nature or personality; the qualities that make a person individual or unique ("Oxford dictionary," 2014). Don’t you feel more enlightened already?
