I like to believe that being Canadian means that I am different than other people from other countries, I like to believe that we are strong and just because we are young doesn’t mean we are not. I also like to believe that we are unpredictable.
In my life I have always been interested in learning about the world and history. From this I have learned that me going to school every day is something I have for being Canadian it is different than other countries. I have gotten a hard work ethic because by being Canadian there are smart people that I have to compete with to be successful, I have to persevere.

This speaks to me because in my life I know that I have a learning disability but I work hard and try not to let it get me down, even though I already know that some people let it get them down. As much as I hated school I knew I had to try because I like to have information and school is a way to get lots. “No one expected the Canadians to take Vimy Ridge”, I know that I never expected myself to make honour roll all through high school.
I never thought I would be taking a grade 12 university English, but I had two grade 8 teachers who believed in me. They told me that I am smart and if I took applied I would be bored. My teacher told me that I would probably get 60’s I’ve gotten 70’s. drive. Yes, I have taken something about the Canadian’s winning a battle and made it all about my life but that’s because I like history and I find that it has helped me be who I am today.
Vimy Ridge is much more than a battle, it is about a country coming together, a country of many different people. But that has everything to do with my worldviews, because I believe that it tells the story of every Canadian. That battle is what allows us to speak english and french, if that battle wouldn’t have been succeeded who know’s if the allies would have won the war.
In grade 10 history I learned all about Vimy Ridge, that class taught me that to be Canadian means to be yourself. Vimy, the Battle Of Kitchener Woods, and Passchendaele are three things that taught me that Canada is a place to be proud of, that we went into a war that wasn’t ours and made the enemy think what are these people. Our youngness defeated them but that is also what the british believed made us weak. That to me, makes me want to use all of my weaknesses as strengths. One of Canada’s largest military endeavors was the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One. It was a fierce battle between Germans and Canadians. Canada was trying to take over the German controlled ridge, which ran from northwest to southwest between Lens and Arras, France. Its highest point was 145 feet above sea level, which was exceptionally helpful in battle because of the very flat landscape. Already over 200,000 men had fallen at Vimy, all desperately trying to take or defend this important and strategic ridge. As a result of its success in taking the ridge, Canada gained a lot more than just the strategic point. Canada was united as a nation, and the victory changed the way other counties viewed them. Canadians no longer viewed their soldiers as merely an extension of allied forces; they now viewed their troops as an independent and unified entity.
Canada was one of Great Britain’s empire who fought under British units or in the Canadian Corps, formed by the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. These Canadians who fought aside with Great Britain earned a recognition of becoming an independent strong fighting force. They earned this reputation through one of World War One’s battles called, Vimy Ridge. Canadian soldiers who were in the Canadian Corps had an awful General named, Sam Hughes who preferred to use the Ross rifle. This type of weapon was too heavy and often jammed too many times to be used as a rifle for upcoming horrific battles. Thus, a new general replaced Sam Hughes and that was, Arthur Currie. General Currie had the desire for the Canadian Corps’ four divisions to fight together to take hold of Vimy Ridge. Arthur Currie made precise plans of military tactics that no general had done to their troops. Canada has become a superior nation thru, perseverance, courage and even care as they persevered thru many dark battles, and made sure they all came thru together as a unit other than individuals. Their courage made there fighting 100% stronger as they wouldn’t back down to any task and they weren’t afraid to lose their life to help a fellow friend and country out. Care played a major aspect in each Canadian heart. There cared about Britain so they weren’t to go help them when they declared war, they helped other troops with their emotional problems and lastly they even cared a little about there enemies as they are the same person, however the only thing separating them is there culture. Canadians have come along way in their culture and identity. Canadians have participated in multiple wars and battles that have shaped our country and the people that live in this country. But it’s not just the violence what shaped our country but the people and traditions that originated outside of Canada and was brought here. One of the major historical events that strengthened Canada’s identity was World War II. About one out of ten Canadians served in the war and many sacrificed their lives for the freedom and the will to defeat the force of aggression (The Axis powers), in hopes of having a better world. Represented by the hard-fought battles of the determined citizens and heroic soldiers, Canada was able to make one of the most significant contributions towards the war. One reason why I am proud to be Canadian is that we are one of the few countries that allow people to live relatively freely. Canadians are glad to have the privilege of many rights and freedoms. For example, we have the freedom of speech whereas in other countries, one might get shot for saying the wrong thing. There is also the charter of rights and freedoms which enable Canadians to live free and happy lives. Canadians also have a freedom of choice. They can make their own decisions and decide how they want to live. Furthermore, the opinion of all people is taken into account by the government. The laws and rules in Canada’s democracy are for the benefit of the people. Compared to countries like North Korea where people cannot even travel, I think Canadians have gotten a pretty good deal for their rights and freedoms.
The Canadian Corps that were involved in the war were organized into four divisions, but many times the divisions were under British command and separated from each other. They were primarily used to supplement British assaults, but Vimy Ridge was the first time that the four Canadian divisions fought together. This was quite an event because they were also under the command of General Arthur Currie, a Canadian. The battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the most important battles in Canada's history. It was on the morning of April 9th, 1917, that 20,000 soldiers attacked in the first wave of fighting (Historica Canada, n.d.). Around noon, the two front lines had been taken up by the Canadian corps. By the 12th of April the whole ridge was taken by the allies and when Hill 145 fell, the operation was considered a resounding success (Scott, 338).The battle of Vimy Ridge was a magnificent victory that brought forth a new national spirit and was one of the most notable days in the development of Canada's national identity. This time Canada was trying to take over the German stronghold on Vimy Ridge. “The Canadians had to get through three lines of German trenches, a network of a tunnel, series of machine gun bunkers and several kilometers of barbed wire so they could reach the ridge. Canadians knew that getting by these kinds of things would require a careful planning and that is why Canadians begin organizing the attack about six months earlier. Some of their engineers drew up some plans and supervised the construction of eleven tunnels so that the Canadian soldiers can use them without getting hurt” (Canada at War.
