My Hispanic background has instilled in me the virtues of resilience and the capacity to discover positive qualities in every circumstance. As a result, I was able to seize opportunities and easily overcome obstacles in my life. My parents, who were raised in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, are the foundation of my heritage. My mother’s family comes from Sinaloa, Mexico, while my father’s side is from the indigenous “Mayos” tribe in Navojoa, Sonora. Although I grew up in Agua Prieta, I was born in Bisbee, Arizona. I found it difficult to learn English and fit in with American culture when I moved to Douglas, Arizona, located next to Agua Prieta. These sayings inspired me to persevere in my language studies so that I could become the first person in my family to speak English well and then pass on my skills to my relatives. My family would always make a small remark that would completely alter my perspective on anything. For example, whenever I felt blue or was bored, my parents would tell me, “Si te pones a limpiar se te quita”. If you start cleaning, it will go away. It is something that many Mexican moms would say, and for other cultures, it may sound rude or nonsense, but I found it effective since it helped me to stop worrying about the little things in life and instead direct my attention toward more worthwhile and useful tasks. I discovered not just my family, but that it is in Mexican culture to find joy and humor in a situation. What comes to mind as an example is Mexican music, such as cumbias. Some of these songs talk about people’s circumstances, which are not always the best ones, yet they make the difficult situation turn into a song that brings happiness and fun. There was an unfortunate situation, but my culture found the positive and created a song that people could dance to and have fun
