If we each had a piece of paper and a writing instrument in front of ourselves this morning, how many of us would be able to identify a place somewhere in this world where there is a war, or a conflict going. I suspect that we could name some conflicted places. It seems as though we hear a lot of war and conflicts these days. A few more commonly known conflicts and/or wars: Darfur region of Sudan; Democratic republic of Congo; Iraq; Sri Lanka Middle Eastern location such as Israel Palestine; Syria Some lesser known conflicts: Central African Republic; Somalia; Eastern Burma; Eastern Chad The locations I have mentioned are just the starting point. Thanks to google and Wikipedia, I was able to find a lengthy list or places which were currently experiencing conflict and or fighting. This list does not even begin to address the locations where they may be open disputes and disagreements. A place may not considered as under war, but the leadership is fighting with itself, or the leadership is at odds with the surrounding community. In these days there are wars and rumors of wars. Through media and technology, we read and hear about hiding in caves and friendly fire, special operations and prisoners of war, classified information from throughout the world being dumped into the public domain. We know what war looks like. WE see pictures on television or the internet. We may hear specific details in our daily routine about war and conflict. Page | 2 I think for some of us listening to the news these days is an exercise of worry and concern, for somewhere there has been an explosion, a suicide bombing, an assassination, involving gangs and tribes, drugs and oil, property and power. In detail we hear the story ... ... middle of paper ... ... in our lives, and it is worth striving to see aspects of this peaceable realm in our own lives. What is peace good for? It is good for the world, it is good for relationships between people, between communities, and it is good for our own souls. What is what peace is good for? And we should not be focused on how long it will take us to achieve that goal, but rather just to set our faces toward peace, and act and speak in such ways to bring about peace. Even if it takes 27 years. Let us remember what Christ brings into this world for us and others. Let us recognize our role as Christians to assist in the making of this world in the form that God desires. And may we work together for peace, amongst and within ourselves, and work until we have a lasting and sustainable peace, in and around us. Thanks be to God and may the people of God say together. Amen.
John Knowles writes a compelling realistic fiction about the lives of two teenage boys throughout the start of World War II in his novel A Separate Peace. Peter Yates the director of the movie plays the story out in a well organized theatrical manner. There are similarities and differences in these two works of art. However; there are also similarities.
The novel, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles describes the life highschool life of Gene Forrester through the flashbacks he experienced 15 years after his graduation. Throughout the novel Knowles takes us on a journey that revolves around Gene and his friend Finny as they go through their years in a private high school. While reading the novel one can see that Gene takes his hero journey during his highschool time as he makes the choices that will dictate not only his hero journey but his entire life.
I identified the first major player in the novel as Phineas. The quote I feel began his role reads: “No one but Phineas could think up such a crazy idea. He of course saw nothing the slightest bit intimidating about it. He wouldn’t, or wouldn’t admit it if he did. Not Phineas.” (14) This quote sets the reader up by describing the sort of person Finny : a daredevil with wild ideas and an air of fearlessness about him.
On this planet there is only the one sure way to ensure peace, government. Luckily throughout history there have been big societies that helped countries establish governments of their own. One of the biggest and well shaped government is the democracy of the United States of America. The U.S. had two societies in particular to look to for guidance, and those two were ancient Greece and ancient Rome.
fighting. It can mean internal war, where not a single show of violence has to be
Brenda Shoshanna once stated, “All conflict we experience in the world, is a conflict within our own selves.” This quote recognizes how much conflict influences our everyday lives and personality. The wise words were especially true for Gene, the main character in A separate peace, who let his battles with other characters and the society of his time become his own internal battles. In John Knowles’s novel, A separate peace, all the types of conflict are shown through the main character Gene.
Historical events can play an important role in a person's life. In A Separate Peace, the whole atmosphere at the Devon School changed as World War II progressed. The boys either eagerly awaited the draft, enlisted in the area of war they wanted, or did not want to go at all. The students at the school created new activities for enjoyment since the customary past times could not be played due to a lack of materials. When a friend "returns" from the war, the boys at Devon got a real sense of what the war was like. The boys learned that going to war was not all fun and games like they had anticipated. The influence World War II had on the characters in A Separate Peace and on life at the Devon School was clearly depicted through their actions and activities.
In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the protagonist, Gene Forrester “battled” within himself to find “a separate peace” and in this process directed his emotions at Phineas, his roommate. Forrester and Phineas formed the illusion of a great companionship, but there was a “silent rivalry” between them in Forrester’s mind. Self deceptions in Forrester led him to believe that Phineas was “out to get him” (Forrester). Subconsciously Forrester jounced the limb of the tree and forced Phineas to fall and break his leg. Phineas found out the truth of his “accident” with the help of Leper Lepellier and Brinker Hadley, who were friends that attended Devon High School. Gene Forrester’s conflict between his resentment of and loyalty toward Phineas’ personality and athletic abilities was resolved by the death of Phineas.
Many people believe that today’s Christians are too sheltered and oblivious to the real world around them. When asked, many outsiders compared today’s Christians to “The Titanic - a ship about to sink, but unaware of its fate” or “a hobby that diverts people’s attention” (Kinnaman 120). It is important Christians to not just stay secluded in one group (church group), but to be talking to others (outsiders) so we are aware of the problems and thing that are going on in the world around us. As Christians we are called to be disciples of Jesus by reaching out to those in need, praying for those around us, and calling people to become the church. In “Unchristian” David Kinnaman outlines three main things we as Christians should include in our lives: accepting responsibility, not being fearful, helping the desperate, being prepared, and keeping a balance.
peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment to the people of the community
...e was a strange beggar. After man has broken so many laws given by the gods, is there any possible chance that peace can ever be an option, or is peace just another figment of man’s imagination?
ways, for all. This is the only way to ensure peace. It begins with equality for all.
can help people to seek the peace of the world and distinguish between right and wrong.
I’m for peace, but the only way you’re going to preserve peace is be prepared for
We need to separate the definition of peace and the definition of comfort as it applies to a people's own independence.
