I am quite dedicated to both my education and the extracurricular activities I do. I go to school even when I am not feeling well or I am extremely tired. I can have a bad cough, stomach ache, or a huge migraine doing an equation in my Ap Calculus class. I have even proven to my Color Guard team that I will be there no matter what happens in my personal life. In fact, I have done this multiple time, one being when I sprained my ankle and was doing marching band drill with crutches and another time is the same day I attended my grandfather’s funeral and showed up at 5:00 P.M. ready for practice. Not a lot of people can show that much dedication to their education or sport. Just imagine how I am going to be in college being bright and early
to every class till the day I graduate. I will be using this scholarship money to be paying my tuition at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe Arizona. It is quite an expensive school because of the fact they are private but the education I will be receiving are from the professionals that are still currently in that field. So, I will be well prepared for when I go into the Game Design career. Since technology is always changing I can always come back to the school after I graduate and touch up on old skills or learn new ones. What this means is that this scholarship is not just going to pay for a four-year education, but help me graduate and come back to learn more things that will lead my career to more and more success.
An HBCU is a college/university that embeds the nature of power and black excellence; a place with surroundings that doesn’t force you, but makes you want to push yourself to become a better person inside and out, and throughout the community. Transferring would allow myself to be put in an atmosphere of continuous motivation and growth that I would feed off of my superiors and the people around me.
Everyone has experienced some type of stress in their life. Whether it has been from work, school, or troubles at home, stress is stress. If anyone had played sports in high school, you know the challenge of balancing school and sports. Imagine that stress, then multiply it exponentially. Everyone knows that college is a much more rigorous version of high school. The only reason some athletes made it to college is due to scholarships for their performance on the field. If they don’t perform well on the field, that scholarship might get cut. This makes practicing the athletes main priority. However, college athletes have to concentrate on their grades so they don’t drop out of college. These athletes know they may not make it to the pro’s, so they know they have to have a back up plan. This back up plan is called a college degree. So college athletes have to concentrate both on sports and classes. Sounds kind of challenging. This is why I believe student athletes should be allowed to miss classes occasionally due to their sport. Athletes are under much more stress, are required to attend practices and classes, and complete their homework. This is simply impossible to do, at least for a human. I believe that this is an important topic because it affects all college athletes.
Amanda Ripley’s idea that athletics are a distraction in “The Case Against High-School Sports” sparked within me the question of whether all people are equally distracted by athletics in an environment which is heavily focused on academics. The author states, “During football season in particular, the focus of American principals, teachers, and students shifts inexorably away from academics.” I can clearly remember a day last May in high school where I had a late football practice and two AP test the following morning. I recall waking up very tired, sluggish, and upset that I did not get a last minute chance to look over my materials. I remember feeling like I had maybe taken on too much, but I knew I would be alright because I had prepared
A volleyball player cannot jump higher from not playing in a week. A student cannot become smarter without going to school everyday and listening to their teachers. When you are dedicated, you want it. I am dedicated to my education, that being the case, I participate in a great deal of school clubs and activities. I was on the AMS Battle of The Books team, which had won the county competition and continued to Regionals. Since sixth grade, I have been included in Honor Society and have maintained high honor roll for three years. Currently, I am the vice president of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Athletic wise, I was on the volleyball team for both seventh and eighth grade. Education is not all about fun and games, there is hard work and strong commitment involved. I want to be surrounded by a group of students who are just as serious about their education as I am. Social Studies and math are two of my favorite subjects. Which are also two subject I excel
As Americans, we must take action against(or for) the issue of maintaining good grades while wanting to pursue an athletic career in high school. The reason being is because of untapped potential, bad time management skills, and peer pressure. There are many people who are affected by this issue such as students athletes, their parents/ guardian and the school itself. Lets not forget the hard working coaches that are counting on your presence you don’t wont to let them down.
All college students sitting in classrooms today face challenges that can impede their success. A challenging course schedule, competing demand for the student’s time, and college readiness are all factors that can hinder a student’s performance in the classroom. Moreover, these challenges also have the ability to impact the student’s overall student development. While most students share a common set of stressors, there are certain groups on campus that face pressures and challenges that are not shared by the majority of their peers. Student athletes are such a group. Joshua Watson (2005) noted the positive benefits of participating in intercollegiate activities, but also noted that such participation can lead to issues of “maladjustment, emotional illness, and psychological distress” (p. 442).
My undemanding of the duties and responsibilities of a public child welfare worker is to ensure the safety of the child. The worker would would first want to get as much informant as possible during intake. This will give the worker the opportunity to assess the safety of the child or children. If a worker finds that it is safe for a child to be where they are, they would just do follow up visits and report back to the agency letting them know the children are still safe. If the worker was to find that the children were not safe, they would do an investigation and intervene, when need be, to make sure they get the children out of that harmful situation. In the process the worker is making sure the child is save while also giving the family the strength to understand what a healthy and safe environment is for that child. Once the worker has educated the family, they may think it is safe for the child to reenter the home, however, if they feel like the family wont be able to take care of the child, they will find and alternative for the child.
In both sports and academics, coaches and teachers commend me for my relentless effort and drive. However, I carry this effort in everything that I do. I have picked up many skills and talents through high school that may seem miniscule to others, but they required dedication and practice. I have taught myself to play the piano, and I also have learned origami and skateboarding. I even taught myself to juggle, and practiced enough until I was good enough to give lessons to others. Most would consider these hobbies, but I consider them passions. When I put my mind to goals or tasks, I strive to be the best. For example, when I began skateboarding, I had trouble learning how to kickflip. However, I practiced for hours alone in the garage, repeatedly listening to the loud crash of the skateboard hitting the concrete floor. I even rolled my ankle on two separate occasions, but these setbacks did not hold me down. I kept trying, until after a month, I finally landed a kickflip. I bring this persistence to whatever I put my mind to, and I know that I can use my drive to learn and succeed in engineering at the University of
Image being a student-athlete in college. You still have to go to class like every other student, but on top of that you have to attend practices and games. Sometimes the games will be out of state, requiring you to leave your school for at least a day, maybe longer. On top of school, practices, and sporting events. How are you going to afford your basic needs? You don’t have time for a part-time job. Not all students have the luxury of their parents sending them money either.
n Addition to this with sports in high school student athletes need to keep up their grades in order to play the sport. Some people may say that when you participate in a sport, it takes away from your studying time and then makes you not as academically inclined as others. I believe that that statement is further from the truth in a recent article written by Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt “High-School Sports Aren 't Killing Academics” from The Atlantic Bowen and Hitt state that “We would expect to see a negative relationship between the commitment to athletics and academic achievement. Going to college is such a stressful time in a person’s life. You have to go through the process of finding what school you want to go to and what you are going to study. Figuring that out has to be difficult because they may be unsure if they are going to make the right decision or not. Now imagine going through the process of picking the best school for yourself and what you are going to study, and add playing a sport on top of that stress as well. You play a sport all throughout your childhood and high school, you do not want to give that up as you go away to college. You decide you are going to go to college to play that sport, not only do you want to play that sport, you also want to go to a Division Ι school and compete at the highest
I decided that I wanted to play a sport, I chose volleyball. Most of my friends played the sport so it wasn't hard for me to adjust and make new friends. Becoming a student athlete was a big adjustment for me, I could no longer float through my classes but I need to excel. And that's exactly what I did. For the first time in my high school career I made not only honor roll, but principal’s honor roll. For the first time my mom was proud of my report card, that made me even more proud. From then on I knew I wanted nothing less than what I earned, good grades and a proud family. From my decision to chose to become a student athlete not only make me work harder but, be great at everything I put my mind to. I had motivation to stay successful, to stay eligible. Three years ago if you were to ask me where I thought I would be my senior year, I probably would have told you low level classes barely making it by. Now here I am today excelling in my education preparing to take the next step in my future, college. ...cess at school. Participating in sports is an easy way to improve both your grades as well as your mental and physical health. From personal experience, I know that when I have sports practice, it is much easier to concentrate, try hard, and get school work done a certain amount of time. On days when I do not have sports, I tend to do other things besides school work like watch television or play on my phone and the hours seem to fly by without getting anything productive done. When I finally get around to my school work, I am tired, stressed and I don’t want to try as hard because I want to hurry and get it finished as soon as possible. By playing sports over the years and meeting so many people around town, I have felt a better sense of belonging here at OIS and have learned many skills that helped me in the classroom and will help me all throughout my life.
I 'm involved in numerous extracurricular activities that will help me achieve my goals. For example, I am the current treasurer of (FBLA) The Future Business Leaders of America, Member of (DECA) it 's an international association for marketing that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in finance, hospitality and management. Additionally, I am an active member with Upstanders, a club that stands up against bullying and hate; (ASA) The African Student Association and the National Art Honor Society. I am also on the football and track teams. Track is a very competitive sport; it teaches me to endure and prepare me for the competitive real world. Do extra-curricular activities have a positive or negative effect on a student’s academic performance? If they do, then why do schools take activities away from students at the first sign of academic troubles? If they are scientifically proven to be positive, then why are they not curricular rather than extra curricular? There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
