1. What do you understand by the phrase ‘Personal Development’?
The first thing that comes to my mind about the phrase ‘Personal Development’ is like a process of self improvement and growth. Its not only about what others expect from you but the key is what I imagine from myself. For example like me, the University life is to learn how to be a successful mass communicator and not many will actually achieve it with excellence result but rather it’s the process of learning what we don’t know. It bascially emphasis on freedom, choice, values, personal responsibility, autonomy, purpose and meaning. I sincerely agree because this is the extension of the cognitive development of an individuals, especially to the students. People usually make choices on their own, have own perception and accept the final result for their decisions. The individual is constantly working to grow as complete personality. For a fully functioning individual, the internal locus of control is very important. The people who are conscious about personal growth have a feeling of continued development; see themselves as growing and progressing in life. They enjoy new experiences and generally have a sense of realizing their potential.
If we let our personal challenges destroy us, then we are nothing and have nothing to offer the world. It is important that we take control of our situation and use the personal hardship as an opportunity to better ourselves. It takes a keen eye and careful self-evaluation to remove any inclusions that will mar the beautiful diamond we possess in all of us. Each one of us is shaped into a distinctive cut of stone, giving way to different grades of clarity and color, making us rare, valuable, and uniquely our own. Frederick Douglass and Barbara Ehrenreich are two individuals who lived in different time periods; however, both individuals used their personal struggles to inspire change in the hearts of others. Just as I use my struggle as a tool to chip away the imperfections in my life, Frederick and Barbara used their experiences to chip away the fallacies of our nation. Personal challenges encourage me to grow as an individual and make better choices for a brighter future.

Personal Development is a lifelong process that involves the assessment of current skills and talents and the enhancement of oneself based on that assessment which then leads to the realization of goals and an improved quality of life. To be able to assess yourself, you need to be able to reflect on your past which helps you to understand the attitudes you have developed and the foundation that you will be building your life on. Also, you have to reflect on your present to see if there’s room for improvement and reflect on your future so that you can achieve your aspirations.
No matter who you are I believe that everyone will go through stages in their life that will get them to where they are on today. I am a person who has a very interesting story; this is the first time it will be told in full. We were asked to use Erik Erikson’s theory of development as a guideline to telling the story of our lives. At first I was very nervous; however, I soon realized that this would be a fun task. Erik Erikson has eight stages of Development (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman). I will be walking you though my life using each one of his stages drawing out the map of my life. Within my life I have had some very interesting encounters. I have been through foster care, abuse, rape, molestation, starvation, adoption, depression, and success. Although my life may not be perfect, I believe that I have overcome these battles and become the person that I am on today. I will be talking about a few crises, milestones, and some of the people that were set in place to help me and or hurt me.
