It was a shock. The pediatric psychiatrist diagnosed me with a novel maladaptive behavior syndrome known as attention deficit disorder (ADD). My condition has notably hindered my ability to concentrate, organize, and execute both in the classroom and within social spheres. However, I have tried to meet the challenges posed by this mysterious syndrome through a number of approaches. I am interested in obtaining my masters degree in the field of social work because I am passionate about issues of equality and fairness, and want to be in a position to help out in this area in a constructive and meaningful way. Social workers have the ability to make direct, beneficial changes in people’s lives, often the people who need it the most. It may rarely be world-changing on a macro level, but social work, when done right, can have world changing effects, for the better, on the people it touches.

With more and more hospital, and clinics, and other healthcare organizations popping up everywhere there is a need for people like me to manage the day-to-day operations. I am choosing to apply to this program because I want to study how the U.S. healthcare system operates. I want to learn the essential skills of operating a healthcare facility such as managing a budget, reducing healthcare costs, analyzing the efficiency of an organization and proposing ways to improve it. This job can be very tedious, but also rewarding if you love working with children. A teacher’s aide is very significant since they are responsible to a positive learning environment. They also providing support for the teachers, when the work load becomes overbearing. The person of choice, for my conducted interview, was Kristen Hicks, of Cumberland Road Elementary. Currently, Mrs. Hicks holds the occupation of a library and media specialist. However, prior to receiving these positions, Mrs. Hicks engaged predominantly in teaching kindergarten through fourth grade. Overall, Mrs. Hicks has been apart of the Hamilton Southeastern School District, for the last fifteen consecutive years. Majority of this duration, has partaken at Cumberland Road Elementary. For Mrs. Hicks, the deciding factor, for choosing the teaching profession, comprises solely on the passion to work with children. The first main reason that I have chosen teaching as a profession is because I believe that it’s continuous rewards will help me to lead a happy and fulfilled life. For example, teaching young children is one of the few jobs in which you can give and receive hugs on a daily basis. Children have an innocence and a passion for knowledge that I find amazing and I do not feel complete unless I am around them. Teaching will help provide this fulfillment for me every day. Also, teaching is a job in which it is ok, and even encouraged, to laugh each and every day. I feel that this is important for a person’s well-being and I think that it helps to keep people young and alive. I feel that in many other professions the day-to-day routine would become monotonous and boring, and I do not think that I would live a truly happy and fulfilled life unless I could be around children. I feel that a classroom provides many unique and dynamic opportunities every single day and I find that very appealing. Also, I am a very relationship-oriented person and I feel that I will enjoy building unique relationships with each child. I plan on knowing every child as thoroughly as possible because I feel that this will help me to be better at my job.
Becoming a teacher has been the ultimate aspiration for myself since the first day I walked into kindergarten. As a very timid student, it was a difficult task transitioning from being with my mother everyday, to being part of a classroom environment full of strangers. However, my kindergarten teacher helped me through this transition smoothly, and adequately. I very quickly learned to love school. Soon after, I knew I would aspire to become a teacher. I would spend countless hours at home with a blackboard, acting as a teacher to my imaginary students throughout my elementary school years.
There have been many factors that have inspired me to this career choice. Watching my teachers, both past and present, has inspired me to become a teacher. I have a genuine interest in lifelong learning and as such I have the desire to not only instil knowledge and values to others, but also encourage them to share my passion for learning. Social Justice and leadership roles at school, along with my extra-curricular involvement with Cowra Youth Council, have highlighted my ability to work with and for the benefit of young people. I enjoy when teachers make learning fun and I know I can be an affective teacher while making learning fun for all students. I must admit the summer off is very appealing although I know teachers put in many after hours during the school year. I feel I can be a positive influence to the students that come into my classroom. One of my most memorable times in my school life was when I was in Mrs. Husted’s class. I didn’t do any homework, didn’t make good grades, and wasn’t very well behaved in her class. Despite all the challenges, I through her way she always helped me and encouraged me and made me do the work I was responsible for. That’s why I want to be a teacher to help students that were like me.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
This past summer I tutored a ninth grade student for his upcoming finals. I helped him with math and biology. It was the first teaching experience I have had and it immediately rekindled my interest in education. I decided that summer that I would get my teaching certification, and consequently, I began my education requirements this spring semester. As soon as I started these classes, especially EDSC 209, 1 knew I had made the right choice. I feel at home in high schools and comfortable teaching and interacting with students. The job, as I see it now, is a great deal more challenging than I had realized, but I am excited about becoming a teacher and I feel as though I will excel as an educator.
