The Role of the Personal Assistant A Personal Assistant (PA) is employed by people who are directing their own care through a direct payment or individual budget from the local authority, or are funding their own support. This is about a person having control over their own life, by employing their own staff and organising their own services. These types of employers are often referred to as ‘individual employers’ (IE’s) PA’s can be employed directly by one employer, can work for a number of different people or in some circumstance may be self-employed. • Supporting the person while at work. • Helping to look after children and pets. • Supporting the person in their chosen activities such as shopping, meeting friends, going on holiday or gaining education. All health and social care and support workers have an overall duty to ensure that people at risk (children and adults) are protected from harm and abuse and are provided with the best possible service to meet their individual needs while simultaneously ensuring that their rights are not violated and that their dignity is maintained.
