Ashley Smith was a young girl that was placed in a juvenile detention centre at age 15 for throwing apples at a mail man. Her short sentence quickly extended into a life sentence because of so many infractions within the prison system. Ashley suffered from extreme mental health issues and was place in a psychiatric prison facility, however this facility was shown in the documentary to be corrupt and their actions with Ashley were extremely illegal. Furthermore, Ashley wasn’t given the proper help and treatment that she needed, instead she was physically and verbally abused by guards in the prison, and she ultimately passed away in the prison. The Sanchez Family is a large family that emigrated to the United States of America from Mexico. The family is deeply rooted in the Catholic faith and retains their Mexican culture. The family members that this case analysis will focus on are Hector Sanchez and his daughter, Gloria Sanchez. Despite attempts in the foster care system agencies under the guidelines of the “Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997” (ASFA) to locate suitable homes and families for foster children, many remain in foster care. “Too often, Child Welfare policy and the agencies responsible for it – offices that respond to child abuse and neglect, oversee foster care placements, and seek to reunite children with their parents to find adoptive families- are out of sight and out of mind except for fleeting moments of tragedy, such as a child’s death”.
In understanding how Mrs. Flowers become a foster parents was when the parent(s) of her grandchild and great-grandchild was unable to care for them. The grandchild was in Mrs. Flower’s home prior to becoming a foster child because the mother was working and needed help transporting the child to and from daycare. The child was later removed from the mother home due to neglect. The child was placed into a non-kinship foster home. The Mother and Grandmother Mrs. Flowers was able to get the child back. The child stayed in foster care in Mrs. Flowers home (Kinship). The Mother got ill and could no longer participate in the child life. The grandchild was with Mrs. Flowers from the age of 1 years old. At age 7 Mrs. Flowers adopted her grandchild.
It is a fine line to judge when is the right time to give up on reunification and seek another permanency option. The ethical dilemma presents itself as to who is the client, the child or the family. Currently at my field agency there is an ethical dilemma surrounding this issue in regards to an infant who is placed in foster care. She was removed from her parents after birth after because of safety concerns regarding her older sister. After 3 years of intervention with this family it is still undetermined who the maltreator is who perpetrated near-death injuries by shaken baby syndrome on this infant’s older sister. Although reunification was sought between this infant and her parents, they have made little progress in their 3 years of supervision and the baby has formed a secure attachment to her foster parents who are willing to adopt her. These ethical dilemmas are difficult because as social workers we have an obligation to promote reunification, but when should it be determined that it is not a possibility. Another common denominator in both videos is that both of the social workers repeated what the client had said in their own words to allow the client to feel heard and understood. Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.

Child abandonment is a serious offense and the children that suffer from such neglect face many psychological problems; if they are ever able to survive their circumstances. The abandonment and neglect of a child can result in serious criminal charges. One striking example is the case of seven month old Daniel Scott (Should We Take Away Their Kids?). Baby Daniel had been left for hours unattended and died of in a pool of his own blood. His mother, a crack addict left him in the care of his father to go on a six day crack binge. His father in turn, left him in his crib leaving the door of their Bronx tenement unlocked for any danger to afflict his unprotected son (Should We Take Away Their Kids?). The parents were later charged with manslaughter by negligence.
In order to formulate a thorough assessment or intervention a social worker must first evaluate all the contributing factors that influence a client’s life. Problems faced by clients are rarely a result of a single factor or influence. Many individual, interpersonal and environmental factors must be evaluated to fully understand the cause of problems. Multidimensional assessments must be used to determine biological, psychological and environmental issues that contribute to problematic outcomes (Hepworth, Rooney, R., Rooney, G., & Strom-Gottfried, 2013.).
