Slowly I turn in a circle as I take in everything around me. Next to me Percy mumbles something about an orientation film, and gestures for me to follow him. I ignore him and turn in a circle again. My breath is taken away. “It’s beautiful,” I whisper. Percy nods impatiently, “Now come on, Annabeth…” his voice trails off, “Actually, I need to go. I’ll catch up with you later.” He runs off, leaving me standing alone. I turn again and my eyes fall onto a little girl sitting by a small fire. I walk over. “Hello. Why are you sitting all alone?” I ask her. She looks up at me. “Child,” she says to me, as if I were the little girl, “I am always alone. You are the first to notice me in decades.” I cock my head, “You don’t look older than one decade. So what do you mean by decades?” The girls form flickers, one minute a flame, then the girl again. “I am Hestia, goddess of the hearth, guardian of hope. I have been around far longer than one decade,” she says. “You-you’re a goddess?” I ask, unbelieving. She nods, “Yes, my dear.” I look up and notice a boy running this way. He is tall with long black hair and very pale skin. He wears all black, as if he is trying to blend in with the shadows. He looks about a year older than me, but it’s kind of hard to tell. “Hestia,” he says as he sits down next to the goddess. Then he looks up at me. “Whoa,” he whispers. I suddenly feel very self-conscious. I tuck my hair behind my ear and straighten my T-shirt. “My boy, what is it?” Hestia asks. He comes out of his trance and looks at Hestia’s face. “I must know,” he says, “What is that girl’s name?” Both Hestia and the boy look at me. “Oh. Uh… people call me Nico,” I say. The boy’s eyes get real big, and he looks at ... ... middle of paper ... ... feel my face turn a few shades lighter in fear of this guy, if Clarisse is afraid… As Clarisse runs of, the man motions for me to sit at a table with him. I carefully take a seat. Suddenly, a centaur gallops up to the house with a worried expression on his face. He notices me. “First time?” he asks the man. The man nods, and the centaur bows his head, “I’m sorry, my dear, but I am busy at the moment. Dionysus will have to give you your tour today. And Mr. D, be kind, please.” He carefully steps into the house and disappears. I glance nervously at Mr. D. He looks at me, “There is nothing to be nervous about, child. I wouldn’t turn you into a dolphin. You have nothing to worry about, at the moment.” That last part terrified me, ‘turning me into a dolphin’ sounded like something to worry about to me. I would prefer to live the rest of my life as a human.

Sandra Cisneros writes a memoir through the eyes of an eleven year old. Turning eleven happens to be a tragic day for the main character, Rachel. Through various literary techniques such as hyperbole, simile, and syntax, Rachel is characterized. Rachel is a fresh turning eleven year old who finds herself in an awful situation on her birthday. Forced to wear a raggedy old sweater that doesn’t belong to her, she makes it defiantly clear her feelings towards the clothing item, and we see this through use of hyperboles. Rachel describes the sweater as ugly and too “stretched out like you could use it for a jump rope.” This extreme exaggeration demonstrates the fire within Rachel. She is a defiant and pouty little girl who out of stubbornness has to defy the sweater in her mind. “It’s maybe a thousand years old”, she says to herself in act to degrade the filthy red sweater even more. The sweater to Rachel has become an eternal battle of ages. She is torn on whether or not to stand up and act bigger th...
Helena Maria Veramontes writes her short story “The Moths” from the first person point of view, placing her fourteen year old protagonist female character as a guide through the process of spiritual re-birth. The girl begins the story with a description of the debt she owes her Abuelita—the only adult who has treated her with kindness and respect. She describes her Apa (Father) and Ama (Mother), along with two sisters as if they live in the same household, yet are born from two different worlds. Her father is abusive, her mother chooses to stay in the background and her sisters evoke a kind of femininity that she does not possess. The girl is angry at her masculine differences and strikes out at her sisters physically. Apa tries to make his daughter conform to his strict religious beliefs, which she refuses to do and her defiance evokes abuse. The girl’s Abuelita is dying and she immerses herself in caring for her, partly to repay a debt and partly out of the deep love she has for her. As her grandmother lay dying, she begins the process of letting go. The moth helps to portray a sense of spirituality, re-birth and becomes, finally, an incarnation of the grandmother. The theme of the story is spiritual growth is born from human suffering.
My original thought when comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie and Classical mythology was that there would be many more references to the myth of Perceus than any other myth throughout the movie in its entirety. That’s where I was wrong. After watching the movie again and researching the different hero myths my opinion has changed. My new thoughts are that the movie is not influenced by the myth of Perceus any more than other hero myths. The movie ties together many different heroes’ stories and mixes them together to make a wonderful story about a young boy. The movie was based on a book series written by Rick Riordan.
This man cares more about the wants and needs of the people around him then his own. Percy is brave in the toughest of situations, and stands up for what is right. Percy Jackson has even saved the world twice, by leading armies he organised on his own.
Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ focuses on Greek mythology and interprets this into a children’s story. Throughout the story, there are many references and adaptations to mythological tales, and each one is portrayed in a different way. Riordan writes this story as though Hercules, Zeus and Poseidon were still around today, and this would be the effect they would have on people in this day and age.
Does Percy Jackson have ADHD? Percy has been diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). The main traits of ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The ADHD child often has trouble keeping his mind on one thing and organizing a task. He/ She feels restless and fidgety. He/She may blurt out comments or act without thinking. Dose this profile fit Percy? I think that Percy has ADHD because he only pays attention to the thing that he is interested in and he gets straight D’s .Do you think that Percy has ADHD?
Percy, along with his friends Annabeth, Grover, and a newly found half brother of his, Tyson, yet again manage to save, for the most part, the Greek world and its counterparts. Rick Riordan is known for being able to tell stories of Greek Mythology by using different comedic yet mythologically accurate elements. In the second book of his Greek Mythology series, “The Sea of Monsters,” he tells the story of the protagonist and son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson, and his friends, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson, trying to save Camp Half Blood yet again. With Percy’s natural leadership and sea-related instincts, Annabeth’s combat experience, the will to save a close friend (Grover), and Tyson’s tremendous cyclop strength and ability, saving Camp Half Blood
“Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”, is a movie adaptation of the similarly titled novel “The Lightning Thief”, written by Rick Riordan. This movie was directed by Chris Columbus and was not well-received during the time in which it was released, due to its substantial differentiation from the novel. Throughout this film, it is clearly made evident that there are several differences between this film adaptation and the original novel that this movie was based upon. The most apparent of these differences can be found in the development of the central characters of the narrative and the sequence of events that occur throughout this movie adaptation. Due to the differences that
The fact that Percy Jackson has friends is incredible. It’s an unshakable fact that any friend of his within a ten mile radius will be in a life or death situation with him by dinner, and they aren’t always so lucky as him. But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. Over the course of the five-part contemporary young adult series Percy Jackson & The Olympians, titular character Percy Jackson must embrace his Greek God parentage and save Olympus with the help of his fellow demigods. The aim of this paper is to discuss his Hero’s Journey throughout the series, provide an in depth character analysis, and draw parallels between Percy and the three classic Greek heroes of mythology: Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules.
Samedi wore the title ‘god’ like a badge on display for most to see and was not afraid to rub it in this demon's face. By now, he had let down his disguise and showed his true form. ‘Skelly in a suit’ Lilith called it. He was now nothing more than a skeleton in a perfect black tuxedo and top hat. Lilith again scoffed at him. “Don’t you have a job to be doing?” Samedi asked. Though he knew that Lilith went on her personal whim, he was hoping to get rid of her as his duties as a loa were calling to him. The tables had turned and now Lilith wore the smug grin. She sat gracefully in the nearest black leather chair. “Nowhere to be, nothing to do.” Samedi squinted his eyes down into slits at her. They both stared at each other for a few moments before Samedi’s job had went from a small awareness in his skull to full on pounding. “You win woman. Now, leave” He told her pointing his bony finger to the now opening
During this marking period, I have read seven amazing books. Through reading these books, I noticed prominent themes and character development. The first book I read was Percy Jackson and the Olympians : The Last Olympian. In this book, Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena and a camp of greek demigods from Camp Half-Blood is in dire need to defeat the evil Titan Kronos before he destroys New York, the Gods, and eventually the world with his evil ideas. Long before this book though, there was a prophecy given by an oracle that stated that upon their sixteenth birthday, a child of the Big-Three (Poseidon, Zeus and Hades) would decide that would preserve or destroy the Olympians and the world. As a child of the big
“A halfblood of the eldest gods shall reach sixteen against all odds. And see the world in endless sleep, The hero’s soul, cursed blade shall reap. A single choice shall end his days, Olympus to preserve or raze.”
A is a being who does not remember a time where they did not move from one body to the next each night. They have progressively grown to become sixteen years old mentally and inhabit the body of only of those who are teens. The author portrays through A's character that love cannot be constrained or defined to notions of race, gender or nationality. A and Rhiannon love each other notwithstanding the fact that A has no gender. “In my experience, desire is desire, love is love. I have never fallen in love with a gender. I have fallen for individuals.” (142). A believes that there should be no limits to loving someone. Everyday displays that love is endless and should not be confined to common notions. Teenagers face struggles to express themselves, making Everyday a great selection of the grade 10 course so they can learn to respect people for who they truly are. A respects the bodies they inhabit, they have rules and limitations set for themselves. A does not use the body in a wrong fashion and does not do anything to impact the person negatively. When they inhabit Rhiannon's body. They did not do anything that she would not want them to do. A is a unique being, they have seen the world from many perspectives and knows the ideology and feelings of other people. A’s interaction with other characters and various experiences gradually shape him into a well rounded character. "I have learned to observe far better than most people" (7). They have experience of life from the eyes of different people. A demonstrates his kind nature by giving everyone the respect they deserve. In the current generation, majority of the teens have problems in respecting the decisions and personality of other people, including Everyday in the Grade 10 curriculum would be
Mythology is naturally evolved products but fantasy is an intelligent design mythis grow when people narrate the stories for long periods of time. These stories are deeply rooted with the events of historical and adopting the culture around them. Fantasy is a story that one person comes up with its entirety and them it finds a public life through mass publication myths often inspire fresh fantasies and on the other hand may fantasies also grow myths in the future. Mythology has at least three things they are connection to a particular culture, a shared world and a deeper meaning. Fantasy on the other hand is not directly a part of ‘real’ world. They may or may not be connected with other stories, they may have or not the deeper meaning,
