Theoretically, the Bible states that God is always present alongside his people. “Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.” Matthew 28:20. In the novel, Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, conveys a message that God’s presence is both acknowledged and ignored by the characters and a message to “love thy brother as yourself” (Matthew 19:19) through forgiveness in spite of of skin color.
Foremost, Stephen Kumalo continuously seeks and lives in the presence of the Lord. Kumalo prays and asks God for help on a daily basis. “Tixo (God), watch over me, he says to himself. Tixo, watch over me (48).” Later, Kumalo’s prayers are answered and the readers can sense a Godly presence with Stephen. Stephen Kumalo is a relatively spiritually inclined priest, who devotes his time praying for his village of Ndotcheni. His devotion to the church, village and God makes God’s presence evident. This commitment helped “Kumalo to pray regularly in his church for the restoration of Ndotsheni (263).” Because Kumalo daily seeks out for God’s aid, His presence is continuously noted, felt or hinted; especially as the novel proceeds to include Kumalo’s constant connection to God. Even towards the end of the novel on page 257, after all of the troubles he faced, Stephen prays a prayer in front of the village. “Tixo,” he prayed “we give thanks to Thee for Thy unending mercy...” Overall, Kumalo heavily depends on God to aid with the problems he face and problems of others. He also uses God as a fundamental foundation on which he builds his faith and willpower to overcome approaching problems.

...ds” and Kumalo’s response is “You are forgiven.” This example is does not quite give justice to Paton’s overall spiritual message to treat others with the same type of respect one would want to be treated through forgiveness regardless of skin tone. Above all, the greatest example is James Jarvis’ struggle to overcome his pride and selfishness to see Africa’s problems through his dead son’s eyes and make a difference in a fellow Christian brother’s life. Jarvis followed the biblical teaching of “loving thy neighbor as thyself” by forgiving Absalom regardless of the fact that Absalom is black.
All in all, God’s presence is never absent but can be ignored. Also, the characters that have a Godly presence tend to follow biblical teachings of forgiving others and treating each other with the respect and love God intended for every human despite the color of skin.

This progressive movement begins with an introduction of both him and his viewpoint. He explains that his childhood in Bearden, Arkansas and his membership to Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E) has taught him about the black Church experience and the sociopolitical significance of white people. “My point is that one’s social and historical context decides not only the questions we address to God but also the mode of form of the answers given to the questions.” (14) The idea of “speaking the truth” is added at this point because to go any further the reader must understand the reason and goal for Black Theology. Through the two sources in that shape theology, experience and scripture, white theology concludes that the black situation is not a main point of focus. Cone explains the cause for this ignorance, “Theology is not a universal language; it is interested language and thus is always a reflection of the goals and aspirations of a particular people in a definite social setting.” (36) This implies that one’s social context shapes their theology and white’s do not know the life and history of blacks. As the reader completes the detailed analysis of society’s role in shaping experiences, Cone adds to the second source, scripture.
Eva is the most explicit in explaining the dynamic between God and his people. She explains this by asking Topsy, "don't you know that Jesus loves all alike? He is just as willing to love you, as me" (412). Earlier in the book Tom had asked a similar question to a downtrodden woman on the boat with him: "Han't nobody never telled ye how the Lord Jesus loved ye, and died for you?" (324). God offers everyone this love, but it can only be claimed by loving God in return. Recognizing the said importance of religion in the black community, Black poets and writers like Phillis Wheatley and Richard Wright, use religion as an important motif in their literature. Wheatley uses religion as a way to convince her mostly white audience of how religious conversion validates the humanity of herself and others. Zora Neale Hurston was an American novelist, anthropologist, folklorist, and short story writer and is closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Hurston grew up in one of America’s first all-black communities. The concept of God can be a difficult one to grasp especially in today's world - a world in which anyone that believes in God is trying to define exactly what God is. To even attempt to grasp such a concept, one must first recognize his own beliefs in respect to the following questions: Is God our creator? Is God omnipotent (all-powerful) or omniscient (all-knowing) or both? Does God care? Is God with us? Does God interfere with life on earth? These questions should be asked and carefully answered if one should truly wish to identify his specific beliefs in God's existence and persistence.
Although black theology became popular in the early 1960’s, it was not an entirely new subject. Black theology views God and Christianity as a gospel relevant to blacks who struggled daily under the oppression of whites. The origins of it are clearly seen in spirituals sang by African Americans during the time of slavery nearly 400 years ago. Because of slavery, Blacks’ concept of God was totally different from the masters who enslaved them. White Christians saw god as more of a spiritual savior, while the reflection of God for blacks came in their struggle for freedom. Slave theology then opened up to Black theology which first began when churches began to become segregated. Many could not understand how Whites could continue to behave this way in the Lord’s house. It was soon realized that this was because, according to them, their God allowed segregation.
