Perception is the lens through which we view our world, as well as interpret or reflect upon life events. I see my world as art –something benevolent and bigger than the mind can ever imagine or fully comprehend. Holding fast to this worldview enabled me to overcome one of the greatest obstacles that I had ever encountered in my life—one which I thought I would never get pass. It was an interesting day on March 4, 2015. I heard multiple voices and car door slams outside of the house. That is when my mom called me downstairs to inform me that my father had passed. This was very shocking news and almost instantaneously changed my perception on life itself! My grades dropped, my confidence was low, and I felt as if everything had been washed away in a tsunami of despair and hurt. However, I emerged with one central truth: The only thing that I need on this journey is faith.
Faith is another word for trust or confidence. There is a Bible passage in

It is our thoughts or what is going on “inside of us” that assigns meaning to situations. According to Wayne Dyer, whether we perceive ourselves as living in a friendly or a hostile universe, determine the lens through which we view the world. Our thoughts and beliefs are often reflective of the lens through which we see the world. For instance, if our perception is that we can’t trust other people, then when something happens and another person lets us down, it reinforces this belief that people are not trustworthy. However, someone with a more benevolent worldview could experience the same event but decide that whatever the other person did was about his/her own beliefs and perceptions and the act had nothing to do with them, nor was it targeted towards them. This latter perception allows you to make a conscious choice to respond rather than react to life events. It also enables the individual to maintain control of his/her own
reality. A belief can be modest or tragic, but the true believer seperate one idea to another
middle of paper ... ... After reading this text, I saw the importance of being open to other worldviews. As a counselor, I will be coming in contact with people from all different walks of life. If a client comes to see me, I cannot expect them to have the same perspective as I do.
In her essay “Seeing”, Annie Dillard focuses on showing how different people have different perceptions. Dillard gives multiple examples to support her main idea, which is that preconceived and inherited notions influence our perceptions. Dillard discusses the different ways of seeing, how people with different backgrounds have different experiences with seeing, and many more. While Dillard’s idea about perceptions is definitely relevant and accurate, but are certainly not complete as there are multiple things that influence our perceptions.
As individuals we oftentimes perceive objects, situations, and circumstances based on our outside view. We never look deeper into the matter; instead we are blinded by our initial perception and create a false reality in our minds. We are only capable of finding reality if we liberate our stubborn grasp on initial judgements. “Dwelling Place” by P.K. Page suggests that when individuals acquire an insider’s perspective on specific situations they are capable of perceiving a genuine reality and abolishing the illusion that was created through false initial perceptions. However, those that analyze situations from the outside will be constrained by these initial perceptions, and will develop an illusion that is far from the truth.
Many people in the world get into an almost unbreakable routine, shielding themselves from the real world. We wake up, brush our teeth, go to school with the same people, go home, and do it all over again. Once there is a roadblock in the way, it forces us to step outside our shell and look at others views for a change. American mythologist, writer, and lecturer,Joseph Campbell once said,”We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” It is the act of noticing others words and actions that will reshape our lives for the better. In “Secret Samantha” and “Sol Painting, Inc.” the authors suggest that observing someone else’s perspective and taking the time to understand others can be mankind's greatest
Going through life means experiencing great happiness but also great loss. Every loss we face may hurt and cause us grief, but we must let life take its course and endure the pain, for we cannot know true happiness without knowing true sorrow. Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet” discusses the hardships that come with pain and loss and gives insight about how a person can overcome that pain. Even the pain might hurt a great deal right now, the wound will only heal if we allow ourselves to feel that pain. As famous poet Lao Tsu once said, “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
An individual’s imagination of an object or place can change how they perceive the world around them. Karen Armstrong in her essay “Homo Religiosus” talks about how “a poem, a play, or indeed, a great painting has the power to change our perception in ways that we may not be able to explain logically but that seem incontestably true” (25), which is implying that it is definitely possible to change our false, impractical perceptions into accurate, practical perceptions. Daniel Gilbert extends on this idea by discussing how in order for positive views to actually be valid “they must be based on facts that we believe we have come upon honestly” (135). To what extent does an individual need to experience various situations in order to gain several perspectives of one thing? To what extent do we need to change in order to obtain a different perspective compared to someone else? An individual’s outcome from various events in their life causes them to create either an optimistic or pessimistic response to the event “by unconsciously cooking the facts and then consciously consuming them” (135). In the essays “Homo Religiosus” by Karen Armstrong and “Immune to Reality” by Daniel Gilbert, both authors discuss how change in an individual’s life by means of the psychological immune system, their emotions, and their interpretations can provide them with different perceptions which is beneficial to having an abundance of knowledge.
Ever since I was little I remember playing games where I would fight the bad guy and win the girl in the end. This never seem to affect me or make me wonder what small effect it had on my thought process. In games such as Zelda, call of duty, assassin creed, gears of war, Mario, and even halo you play as a white heterosexual male. The idea of playing this way never seemed to phase me as a young child. As I grew up and became more aware of the difference of people and the need for other as well as myself a need to be able to connect and find one 's self in different place such as games, movies, and TV shows. I became aware of the one sided views that video games seem to have. Then I realized that it was seen as acceptable to only have the one sided displayed due to the lack of speaking out on the need for change.
Not only does our worldview influence how we perceive the world around us, but also it shapes what we see or anticipate seeing, and how we explain things. Particularly, this prejudice is visible in the mode in which we in respond to all queries of life. For example, by placing two people under the same situation, there is a probability that each will define that situation differently dep...
As a person goes about their lives, they have expectations of how things should happen. Those can be known as fundamental beliefs. A large player in these beliefs is someone’s perspective. When something occurs, there is usually someone around to see it. Depending on who saw it, the retelling of the event could be completely wrong. While one person sees some details and forgets others, someone else might notice what the other missed. Both parties would feel that they are correct, so according to their accounts, they have witnessed the same thing, but in their own personal realities. For them, the world has been altered from its natural course. Their beliefs changed that. One more way that perception can change reality is known simply as The Observer Effect. It is a scientific phenomenon that was studied in the 1990’s. Scientists noticed that by observing things, they could change the outcome of an experiment. All they had to do is look at it or hook a sensor up to it. Somehow the electrons that they were studying behaved differently when not being observed. This effect can be applied to our lives. When we are observing things, an event may change completely. Because of this observer effect, we can literally shape
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
What one person values in life changes constantly depending on their life experiences. Each person leads to having a unique and genuine experience depending on who they are. The blank area of “what really happens” is the wake-up call to some and a disappointment to others. There is a way to overcome the overwhelming desire to look at life differently: perspective. Looking at life from a different angle can literally change you and your life.
The arts have influenced my life in amazing ways. Throughout my life, art has been the place I run to and my escape from the world. As I’ve grown older, art has become so much more than that. Every piece of art I create is a journey into my soul. It’s a priceless way to deal with my emotions and my struggles. I create art not only because I enjoy it and because I want to, but because I have to. Somewhere deep inside there is a driving force, urging me to put my heart down on paper. I become emotionally attached to each of my pieces because they are like dashes on the wall marking my growth. Each one is the solution to a problem I have dealt with and overcome.
This lesson is designed to review and reinforce a few important concepts about plants (e.g. Needs, parts, sequence of planting) and to also guide the students through applying a few scientific inquiry (e.g. Making observations, experimentation, discussion, reflection, reporting results etc.). The students have previously planted corn and bean seeds and today’s lesson has provided the students a chance to see the results of the planted corn and bean seeds. Additionally, seeds have been planted under and growing under the following conditions: without water, and without soil. The students see the results of these seeds planted under these conditions for the past week. Two plants in particular have already been grown their growth has been
