During this cycle; cycle three, I learned about perceptions. Perception is the process of paying attention and assigning meaning to information. The Process of Perception includes
Attention and Selection which is when people choose to pay attention only to certain sensory messages these are the ones driven by people's needs, interests, and expectations. The second process of perception is organization which is when the brain arranges stimuli so they make sense by using simplicity and patterns. The last process of perception is interpretation which is when the brain selects and organizes sensory messages it also interprets stimuli. I also learned the difference between self-concept and self-esteem. Self-concept is who a person thinks he
The first unit on our textbook Interactions by Ann Moseley and Jeanette Harris talks about the self-concept. It is hard to find a definition for the self-concept because it is certain beliefs about ethnicity, religion, and personalities combined. This unit has a number of readings by various authors where it shows struggles with the self. Self-identity, ethnic backgrounds, and self-esteem are the major aspects of those readings. After reading their writings I found that I could relate to their experiences. The three readings that got my attention were “Zero” By Paul Logan, “I’m Just Me” by Lylah Alphonse, and “The Jacket” by Gary Soto.

One of the most common American proverbs is the expression to “never judge a book by its cover”. This saying, used for more than just books, is commonly used to express that what is on the appearance of something might not always show that things true nature or content. Even so people will often forget this fact and rely on their own perception. So what does this say about perception? To Victor Hugo author of the novel Les Misérables this would probable show that human perception is flawed and that people trust it more than they should. In Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables he suggests that by following only our perception will not always lead to the truth, with the characters of Thénardier, Jean Valjean, and Inspecter Javert.
Our five senses –sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch help the ways in which we perceive the world around us. And while they seem to work independently at time they can effect each other and the way we comprehend something. Seeing something pretty, touching something soft, eating something cold and smelling something rotten are the sense we use to connect with the world around us and will all effect how we move forward in that situation. When you look at the top picture say the color of the word not the word itself. It is harder than it seems and takes a little practice to do it efficiently. It is because we see the spelling we were taught not the color it was written in. It is hard to process it the other way, but not impossible. Take the bottom picture for another example is this a

Without the combined use of perception, emotion, logic, and language, my ability to pursue knowledge and gain an understanding of the world around me is limited. For me, measuring the success of the pursuit of knowledge is based on the fact that I am able to comprehend knowledge from multiple viewpoints, and not be restricted to a certain way of thinking. In Maslow’s quote, being only restricted to one tool, or way of knowing, is an issue for me to pursue knowledge because of the restrictions and barriers that exist when my focus is only on one way of knowing. In the case of sense perception, I am incapable of processing knowledge when other ways of knowing are neglected. Through this, I propose the following knowledge issue: To what extent is perception a restrictive factor on an individual’s ability to comprehend and pursue knowledge? Because the use of perception is so interlocked with other ways of knowing, such as emotion and logic, the problem exists in the fact that perception is a tool that is dependent on other tools.
I learned that I thought, that I had more Self-awareness (chapter two) then I actually do. I always thought that my self-awareness was good until I realized what it really was. Self- awareness makes you ask the question who am I? allowing you to view yourself as a unique person and to reflect on your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I realized that I had a lot of learning to do. For example; when I was in high school, I thought that the reason I didn't do well was because of the hard ships that I was going through but in reality it was because I wasn't aware that my ability to work hard and study was slacking. I had to learn how to work ahead and plan a schedule of some sort in order to stay organized. I learned that my Self-esteem (chapter two) which is the overall values, good or bad, that we assign for ourselves. is very low. This surprises many people, I have always been told that I am a good optimistic person, but unfortunately all I saw was my flaws and problems making me have very little self-esteem. However, through this year and my classes I gained two things that improved my self-esteem very much. Those two things include leadership and confidence, for example; I am the student leader and advisor for my alternative high school, I gave a speech to our congressmen and the press to share information about my alternative high school and I help students achieve small things like
Lastly, behavior can also be determined by sensation and perception, the stages of processing the information gathered from the senses. Sensation and perception depicts the world for humans. Without them, humans would not be able to truly experience what is going on around them. The first step, sensation, is the gathering of the information from the outside would through the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. The information is then organized and interpreted by the brain through
First of all, Sensation comes first when you gather the physical stimulus which is registered by sensory organ. After a long process, you will be able to make sense out of the sensation. For instance, seeing the light is sensational, but determining the color of that light is perception. In the bottom-up processing, Sensation is an important part, which means that the sensation happens when the sensory organs transmit information to our brain. However, in top-down process, perception is the important part of it. In this case, perception can occur after the brain interprets the sensory information and sends the signals to the sensory organ in order to respond to the physical
Perception is defined as the process of organizing, interpreting, and selectively extracting sensory information . Visual perception is left to the individual person to make up their own mind. Perceptual organisation occurs when one groups the basic elements of the sensory world into the coherant objects that one perceives. Perception is therefore a process through which the brain makes sense of incoming stimuli.
Each one of us lives in our own unique world of perception. As individuals, we may experience life in an entirely different way through our senses and life experiences. Therefore, perception can be tricky since it is very personal to each one of us. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, perception has three meanings; (1) “the way you think about or understand someone or something,” (2) “the ability to understand or notice something easily,” and, (3) “the way that you notice or understand something using one of your senses” (2014, para. 1). C.S. Lewis said, “What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are” (n.d., para. 11). In other words,
With each of our senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, and hear), information is transmitted to the brain. Psychologists find it problematic to explain the processes in which the physical energy that is received by the sense organs can form the foundation of perceptual experience. Perception is not a direct mirroring of stimulus, but a compound messy pattern dependent on the simultaneous activity of neurons. Sensory inputs are somehow converted into perceptions of laptops, music, flowers, food, and cars; into sights, sounds, smells, taste ...
Perception is a manner of selecting, organizing, and interpreting people, objects, events, situations, and or activities. The movie “Inside Out” is a perfect example of how perception affects our communication; it shows exactly how the process of selection, organization, and interpretation correlated to each other.
Perception is a mysterious thing; it faces a lot of misconception, for it can merely be described as a lens, as it decides how someone views the events happening around them. Perception is the definition of how someone decides to use their senses to observe and make conceptions about events or conditions they see or that are around them. Perception also represents how people choose to observe regardless if it’s in a negative or positive way. In other words, perception can be described as people's cognitive function of how they interpret abstract situations or conjunctures around them. All in all, perception can do three things for someone: perception can change the way someone thinks in terms of their emotions and motivations, perception acts
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
