Paper 1: Perception and Self Concept Significant others are people we look to for self-concept information. In other words, the perceived judgments of those who are important to us are greatly valued. They influence how we view ourselves. Some of my significant others are my husband, mother, step siblings, half siblings, biological brother, father, mother-in-law, and my children. My husband is kind even when I am being a complete jerk. He never sees me as the jerk that I feel I am being. His opinion of me influences me to be kinder. From the time I was in my early 20’s to the present, my mother has often come and asked for my advice about various issues and concerns. The value she places in my opinions encourage me to have a voice in matters I feel are important. I was adopted by my father when I was 8. My step brothers and sisters did not recognize me as a sibling and in many ways were cruel and unkind. They negatively influenced my self-concept. I felt that I had no place in my family. Though this was many years ago, I still have moments of feeling that I do not belong because of this. In contrast, when those step brothers and sisters left home to live with their mothers, my half-siblings and biological brother were able to show me how much I was loved. I found myself becoming more willing to engage in a familial relationship with them. This did not take away the negative self-concept entirely. Instead, it helped to improve my concept of belonging, which in turn influenced me to be a better sister. My father received the brunt of my negativity. I began to be cruel and unkind to my father because I blamed him for the behavior of his children. He tolerated my ugliness with grace for the most part. The father did not want anything to do with the baby and encouraged her to have an abortion. Her mother did not want anything to do with the shame of having a daughter pregnant out of wedlock and in high-school. In her mother’s eyes, having this baby would ruin my cousin’s future. My cousin had very little say in the matter. Thinking she was doing what was best, my cousin’s mother drove her to an abortion clinic out of state and the baby was aborted. Never did she consider the psychological trauma this would inflict on her daughter. My cousin spiraled out of control. Drugs became her solace. Today she is in prison with few prospects ahead. Abortion was the catalyst that ruined her life. Friends, medical personnel, and family helped to shape and change my standpoint.
Family relationships assist me because they help me focus on my family rather than the tragic event that happened. The effect a family has on one another during a time of difficulty is very strong. One might have a mother, a father, and also brothers, sisters, grandparents, etc. These are the people that one will draw closer to in times of need. Besides their spouse, one’s relationship with their mother is the closest relationship one will have with another human being.. For six weeks, Lorri is alone on an island with the two deceased passengers, Josie Archer and Clarence Fuller, and all that she longs for is the accompaniment of her mother. Her only will to live is so that she could be with her mother again since she has not been able to see her for years before because of World War II. In Wick 's book, Every Storm, she says, “ 'Mother, Mother,’ Lorri sobbed, not able to get close enough,” (Wick 93). When one does not have a mother figure, they lose that maternal bond. The relationship between a mother and child is strong because no one will be able to replace ones real mother. This certain situation made me think of how lucky I am to have a mother that cares about me. It also made me think that if I were in the same
For example, when I was younger my father told me that I would never be smart enough to attend college and that I might as well not even try to apply. For most of my life, this has caused me to think I would never be smart enough to graduate from high school or attend college. Eventually, I overcame this fear when I graduated high school and was accepted into college. I also had to learn not to take things personally from my father because the things that he said about me were not true. If I kept listening to him, I would always find myself hurt by the things he says. I began to realize that I had a problem with taking things personally, and I realized this even more after conducting some personal interviews about the Four
Significant others are people whose opinions we especially value such as family members, a special friend, a teacher, someone you dated, and so on.
When the smoke clears and the dust settles, only the women who experienced such events in their lives should speak on the psychological effects of abortions. However, I do know, as the poet so puts it (Banh, 2014) that, I knew them all though faintly, I loved them all and I will always have an open space in my heart for all my un-born children.
Talking about abortion brings out an emotional response in many women. This is because having an abortion takes a massive emotional toll on some women. As Nanyjo Mann said, three weeks after having an abortion, “I became preoccupied with the thoughts of death. I fantasized about how I would die. My baby struggled for two hours” (Reardon, 1987, p. xviii). In the forward of the book “Aborted Women, Silent No More” Nanyjo, a women telling her story of abortion, goes on to tell about feeling unstable with herself after having an abortion. She wanted to prove to herself that destroying others didn’t hurt, but it does (Reardon, 1987, p. xix-xx). Continuing in reading Nanyjo’s story, she tells all of the effects and feelings she went through after having an abortion including stress, depression and low self esteem. Any girl under the age of 18 would have an even harder time dealing with this type of stress. Teenagers are already seeking their identity and worry about their grades, looks, and peer acceptance. Going through the post abortion stress all by themselves would be overwhelming and potentially put them at risk for mental breakdown.
The most common conflicts that cause a woman to get an abortion are based on their own personal responsibilities. Sixteen percent of women, who get abortions, believe that their life would be changed too much to acquire a child. Twenty-one percent of expectant mothers feel that they are not ready for the responsibility to care for an adolescent. Few as twelve percent have complications with relationships or are unmarried. One perecent have been raped and/or incested. Twenty-one percent have financial disputes. Eight percent currently bare children and have all they wish for. Three percent have discovered that the baby in the womb has health issues. Four perecent of the abortions are other reasons. Lastly, the abortion pill used to minimize the fetus, does not work, therefore the woman receives an
Abortion has so many different viewpoints on the topic, some positive, some negative. Roe and Wade played a huge part in the decision making process on abortion. Everyone has their own opinions about abortion, but the opinions concerning when life begins have a significant effect on a person’s views concerning whether they are for or against abortion. Studies of the long-term effects of abortion on women are traumatic and devastating. They can include mental, physical, and emotional problems after an abortion.
In today’s society, life is based off of many different choices. The choices you make in life could have a strong impact on anything and everything in your life! Imagine being put in a life changing situation and not having a say in whether or not you want to experience it. Having a baby is a prime example of a life changing situation and there are debates that argue if it is an experience that should be mandatory for those involved. In other words, several arguments have been made about women and their right to abortion. The definition of abortion is “to terminate a human pregnancy,” which is usually performed in the early stages of the pregnancy. Abortion is a controversial topic that many find difficult and uncomfortable to discuss. Most
Abortion has been a controversial debatable topic for years. Should women and young teens have the final say in if they feel the need to keep or abort an unwanted baby. In the case Roe v. Wade marked the legalization of abortion by a supreme court, which started the debate over abortion. Educating women and young teens on the dangers of abortion will help them make safe sound decisions on abortion and the many alternatives to consider before aborting a baby. The pros and cons of this debatable topic raises some serious issues of why women and young teens consider abortion to what time frame after conception is the embryo considered a life..
Abortion sets a bad example the future of our nation. We know this through research. With a study towards attitudes about abortion in young adults ages eighteen to twenty one, from the years 1977 to 1993. This study attempted to determine if court rulings had an effect on the views of abortion. In response to this study eighteen year olds were mostly pro-choice and twenty one year olds were the least. Males are more pro-choice than females (Misra and Hohman. 85). Abortion is a very common thing, more common than we would like to believe. Approximately 1.5 million abortions take place every year in the united states, one in ever four abortions come from pregnancies and unintended pregnancies ( Misra and Hohman 85). Abortion causes much harm. Abortion can cause infection, perforation of the u...
To begin, what led up to my adoption. This was very difficult part of my life, which began when my mom and my dad split up. They broke up when I was very little and my mom met a guy that I really did not like. He was a major alcoholic and always beat my mom, brother and I. There have been times that we tried to get away but he would seem to always find us. This was when finally my brother and I ran away and which caused us to
Due to the circumstances that I had to live my life with I was disowned by my family all because my parents were ashamed of the person I was becoming, not heeding’s to their teachings of not letting the environment I was in getting the better of me but I should use the place I was as a reference to be better in life, I didn’t blame them at all because I could only imagine back then how block

I have three siblings along with three nephews. I have a younger sister, older sister, and one older brother. My older sister is the one that had my nephews. We all lived under the same roof until I moved out for college. My mother was more like my father in the house because my father was away working for us, and even though my siblings are her children, it seems that they 're her siblings too. It felt that I was the parent of my nephews and little sister because of the way I had to care for them because everyone else was working. I connect with my immediate family firmly. We always look out for each other because we mean so much to one another. I
Abortion has taken the lives of more than 50 million babies since 1973 (“About Abortion”). The issue of abortion is one of the most common controversial issues in American politics and culture. In modern society, many women that have an unintended pregnancy and they result to abortion without researching other options. Abortion is not a substitute for birth control and this issue should be taken seriously. The individual woman needs to understand that by agreeing to have an abortion she is agreeing to kill an innocent fetus. Abortion rips the unborn child from his or hers right to life. Society needs to let women see through the eyes of the fetus and find alternative ways to raise the baby. Abortion should be illegal because childhood begins at conception, not at birth.
