Over the past few decades, our society has evolved in many ways. The advancements of our community is due to technology. The most prevalent being computers and cell phones. These two inventions have made everyone’s lives easier to navigate and excel. Society today seems to be better for the advancements of these inventions. Life has become easier because of the technological changes yes; but not for everyone. When looking at our future and deciding what invention to do next, we need to see who could benefit in our society to help them achieve great success in life. For me this is an easy question. I would say people with seizures. I have a daughter who is an epileptic and has many challenges ahead of her in life. People with seizures cannot …show more content…
I have an invention that could make the people with seizures in our society live a more independent life. My invention goes hand in hand with the cars that are being developed to drive themselves. If we had a special headband for people with seizures to wear that would interact with the car, it would allow them to be able to drive themselves and not rely on others. The way it would work is, if a person is driving a car while wearing the headband and they have a seizure; the headband would recognize it and alert the car that they are having a seizure. The car would then take control and would drop the speed of the car safely and get the car to the side of the road and put the car in park. The car would then communicate with the police that the driver is having a seizure and the location of the vehicle. The “Seizure Headband” would allow people in our society that are unable to attain things as others do, get a new start on life. This would allow more freedom on their part. Most people with seizures feel that they are a burden on others. With this invention they are able to come and go as they please, look for better jobs without any time restraints, go and see parts of the world they could not before and move away to another city or state without depending on someone
Epilepsy, also known as “seizure disorder,” or “seizure attack,” is the fourth most common neurological disorder known to mankind, affecting an estimated 2.3 million adults and 467,711 children in the United States. Unfortunately this disorder is becoming far more common and widespread worldwide. This staggering number of cases of people suffering from Epilepsy also involves an average growth rate of 150,000 new cases each year in the United States alone. Generally, many of the people who develop who are a part of the new are mainly either young children or older adults. Your brain communicates through chemical and electrical signals that are all specialized for specific tasks. However, through the process of communication, chemical messengers, also known as neurotransmitters can suddenly fail, resulting in what is known as a seizure attack. Epilepsy occurs when a few too many brain cells become excited, or activated simultaneously, so that the brain cannot function properly and to it’s highest potential. Epilepsy is characterized when there is an abnormal imbalance in the chemical activity of the brain, leading to a disruption in the electrical activity of the brain. This disruption specifically occurs in the central nervous system (CNS), which is the part of the nervous system that contains the brain and spinal cord. This causes an interruption in communication between presynaptic neurons and postsynaptic neurons; between the axon of one neuron, the message sender and the dendrite of another neuron, the message recipient. Consequently, the effects that epileptic seizures may induce may range anywhere from mild to severe, life-threatening ramifications and complications. There are many different types of seizures associa...
Epilepsy is a very common neurological disorder. Some reports estimate that five in one-thousand people suffer from this problem. Throughout history, people with epilepsy have been shunned or considered inferior. Even today, ignorance leads many people to treat the epileptic as "abnormal" or "retarded". Although the etiology of epilepsy is still not fully understood, it is quite treatable due to advances in modern medicine.
Once a patient receives the diagnosis of epilepsy, it is time to begin considering treatment options. Since curing the disease is not possible, the treatment focuses on controlling seizures. This is typically done in one of three ways: drug therapies, lifestyle changes, and surgery.
Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent seizures which are unprovoked by any immediately identifiable cause (Hopkins & Shorvon, 1995). It is also known as a seizure disorder. A wide range of links and risk factors are associated with the condition, but most of the time the cause is unknown. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting approximately two and half million people in the US and about 50 million worldwide. Though seizures can occur at any age, epilepsy is most commonly seen in children and the elderly. Most respond well to treatment and can control their seizures, but for some it is a chronic illness. A clinical diagnosis is the first step to finding a potential cure for the disorder.
Since the Internet has emerged from society, access to information has been made readily available for anyone to discover. The Internet connects us to the world everyday, whether at work or at home. It helps us communicate with others; via email, social networking, or blogging. With the absents of the Internet, our society would be missing out on a vast amount of knowledge. Therefore, the Internet is unmistakably beneficial for society to use as part of their daily lives. Also, cell phones have evolved from being solely in place for emergencies, to searching the Internet and paying bills. People of all ages are using cell phones, whether for work or pleasure. There are so many technological devices in our society; however, this technology can be misleading. People voice numerous arguments, both beneficial and non beneficial- concerning technologies in our world.
Technology is one of the most important things in everyone’s life. Technology improves every day. in regards to today’s youth, they were born with all the new technological inventions as opposed to our parents. In “Quality Time, Redefined” by Alex Williams, published in the New York Times, the author talks about the positive and negative effects on technology. I enjoyed this reading because it related my personal day to day life. Even though some Americans acknowledge that technology is a part of their everyday life, they do not see the negative outcome of technology, they are blinded only by the positive aspects.
The topic of technology and our society has become a very controversial subject today. Many people believe that technology is an essential component of our modern world, helping us to improve communication from farther distances as well as giving us easy access to important information. On the other hand, there is the opinion that too much technology is affecting social interactions and our basic development. “Technology…is a queer thing, it brings you great gifts with one hand, and stabs you in the back with the other.” (Carrie Snow.) The CBC Documentary “Are We Digital Dummies” displayed the pros and cons when it comes to modern technology that we use in the western world everyday.
Although Though technology can be good, it can be worse than good, such as people always with their faces on their phones and headphones in their ears, people neglecting books and using more online text, and people wasting their lives watching TV.Children now know how to use a phone faster than they can
...re they take their medication regularly. Many problems have been associated with Epilepsy that can easily be treated. It is very difficult to live with Epilepsy and it is not an easy task. With more knowledge about epilepsy, hopefully this would put others more at ease if they were to encounter someone else having a seizure. They would know exactly what to do.
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
Around 1970, a research established four general classes according to the type of seizure. I learned that medication can be dependent on whether the person is either a morning-type person or an evening-type person. Because medication is very time sensitive and altering, it can have a huge impact on an epileptic person’s behavior. For example, medication being given to an evening-type person can lead to sleep deprivation because of their morning responsibilities. This deprivation also leads to the person having less control over their seizures. I also learned the brief history of epilepsy. The Mayans found that epilepsy was one of the illnesses people would be cursed with, and so they would cure people with a magic spell. The Aztec and The Incas would use botany medicine to naturally cure their people. It is interesting knowing how different cultures would find their own way to diagnose and cure those with epilepsy. Also, it is amusing to know that individuals with epilepsy were extremely discriminated. These people would be denied their rights throughout ages, which also included their education and work training as well. For those who have epilepsy, life expectancy is lowered with the mortality rate of 2 to 4 times compared to a regular
The standard 21 year old adults have exchanged 250 thousand emails, spent 5 thousand hours video gaming and 10 thousand hours using their mobile devices (Lei, 2009). When people hear the word technology, they think of microwaves, televisions, cars, NASA, different types and transportation and more. For all that, technology has occurred long ahead these discoveries. Technology is an arguable matter amongst people. .In the old days, people lived an extremely simple life without technology. They used candles to light their houses and lanterns at the dark to travel, they used fire to cook and used newspapers and mail to share news. On the other hand, technology has seized an important place in our society. People are living in a stage of progressive technology. They are using all natural reserves applicable for making their lives better and easier. The society cannot picture life without electricity since it allows them to live through their everyday life. This paper argues that technology positively impacts people’s lives.
Today, Americans are faced with the increasing change of technology in our everyday life. Sometimes the change happens and we do not realize how it affects our lives. I think it is always a good idea to talk to someone that is older than yourself, like your grandparents to remind you of the times in their younger years. Hopefully, that will open your eyes to the changes we face in this generation and the generation to come. In this chapter, the author explores the relationship of changing technology to changes in both the environment and social institutions.
We can all complain about the technology that has been in our lives but face it, we would be lost without it. As times started to change the computer started to develope. Internet became accessible to many people. Computers and internet access has allowed many people to live an easier life. When the Ipod came out everyone raved over it. Now we know why. The Ipod has transformed the way we listen to music even to this day. In many opinions the biggest little invention has transformed over ninety percent of the world. You guessed it right, the cell phone. First it was just the typical car phone that was as big as a young girl 's shoe, now it 's a debate on which smartphone to get. Smart phones have made lives easier but has also started many problems. We all love the smart phone until it shatters or goes dead in a dire emergency. These technology advances have made quite an impact on our society today. It has really made us into the lazy human beings we are now.
Technology has changed modern society drastically, both positively and negatively. Technology has influenced every aspect of our life, making it simpler but not necessarily better. Albert Einstein was concerned about the advancement of technology. "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction."1 Undoubtedly, what has changed the most are communication, the spread of information, and how business is practiced. Consequently, practically everyone knows how to use a computer, connect to the Internet, or use a smartphone. This is demonstrated by the way the Internet is used daily by millions of people to communicate, to sell, advertise, retrieve, and share information. Thanks to the Internet, information from anywhere in the world is at our fingertips. As a result, the advancement of technology has changed our life in many ways including; sharing of information, communication, business, education, social interaction, simplifying everyday tasks, replacing basic skills and jobs.
