The code of the west is things to live by, they were never actually written down, but they were something that everyone in the west seemed to live by. It was a different time that these people lived in and a lot of the “laws” that they lived by are not even considered in today’s society. One of the “laws” that I believe should people should always follow is talk less, say more. This is something that means a lot to me and the world that I live, and grew up in. This is a code that does affect you throughout your whole life and never loses meaning, no matter how young or old you are. Talk less; say more is the most important and the most meaningful “rule” in the codes of the west. This code, talk less; say more, is one that still really applies to modern life and that always will. Almost every kid growing up was taught the saying, actions speak louder than words, a lot of people have seemed to forget the actually meaning behind those words growing up. These are the people that know they talk too much, but they might just not know how much they truly talk. The people that sit in the background and never say anything are the ones that are talking more. You might wonder how that is possible, but think how much you respect and ponder on what that person says when they actually do speak. Their words mean so much more than that person that talks all of the time. The person, who always has something to say, might not be telling the whole truth because they just want to fill space. They could be making up stuff as they begin talking. The person who sit back and observes as all of these people talk around them are the people that tell the truth and say more even though they verbally speak fewer words. Sports are something that you really n... ... middle of paper ... ...talk less; say more code. People will always know someone who just talks too much and makes up stories all of the time, but when you meet that person who says things and truly means all of them you have met a true person. Some that you can give respect to and always believe in them that they will follow through with whatever promises they may make to you. This code is one that will always be used and needed in certain ways. If people were to just talk and never back up what they were saying with proof of what they have supposedly done in their past then they are untrustworthy. Those are the talkers of the world. When someone does not say a thing, yet people know that they have done something marvelous then that is a truly good person. They do not need to gloat or be above anyone else; they can just sit and listen to the world around them because that is saying more.
one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest
Too many people have too much distance between what is public and what is private. Total honesty is an incredible thing. When children are small they are often taught that withholding the truth is another form of lying, yet grown men and women do it every day. Behaving one way in public and another way in private weakens and cheapens public life and private life. When a person keeps things from their coworkers and peers, their coworkers and peers are being denied the total package. How can trust come from that? When that same person saves a part of him or herself for select individuals, those ind...
When you’re honest about the things you do, you don’t have to carry burdens about lying. Being honest can lead you to being happy because you made the right the decision to begin with. Doing honest deeds are rewarded to the people who tell the
Communication is the foundation of any society. Humans are interactive beings that must communicate in order to survive. Humans develop communication skills as infants; learning to yell when something is needed, cry when something is painful, and smile when feeling happy. As babies age they learn words; eventually learning to compose sentences allowing them to express their feelings or desires. Humans finally learn to communicate within different parts of their life with different forms of communication such as letters, spoken, visual, and more. As one ages, they become aware of the different rules of communication used with certain people and situations; such as learning to speak to a teacher in a different manner than how one talks to their friends. While doing this, people are unconsciously starting to learn how to conform in the different discourse communities. Discourse communities are an essential part of life, and learning to communicate in those communities is just as vital.
The Moral Codes of Comitatus and Chivalry. Throughout history, there have been different codes of ethics that are often more important to a society than the governing laws of the land. While laws are written standards that people are compelled to abide by for fear of punishment, these codes serve as guidelines for how people should live their lives. Two such codes are comitatus as demonstrated in Beowulf and chivalry as depicted in Morte D’Arthur.
In our society there excites a general feeling of distrust. We live in a culture of false advertising and as a result we don’t know who we can trust. People are constantly afraid that the government, corporations and media, are lying to them. Stephen L. Carter’s article The Insufficiency of Honesty, captured my attention because it addressed this issue at its core and left me contemplating the issue of integrity vs. honesty. Currently, there is an outcry for honesty. But in truth honesty is not enough and not quit what we are looking for. Honesty is often used to deceive, to induce harm and to avert blame. What people are really searching for is integrity. Carter’s article address the difference between honesty and integrity and how honesty can be used dishonestly. He also discussed how long held beliefs effect our perception of honesty. All of these factors affect how we view our society and add to our feelings of mistrust.
As an illustration, even fairy tales stories teaches children to live by this quote. From what I learned in Snow White, when the woodsman failed to kill her, the evil queen decided to go out and do it herself by disguising as an old woman. Despite the dwarfs’ advice to Snow White, her good heart carried the day. She still talked to the woman even though she did not know her, and still accepted the apple the woman offered her and unfortunately she fell into a deep sleep. Consequently, it shows that if she did not talk and accept the apple from the stranger, meaning the old woman, she would have never been in the situation that she was because it could have been worse. Therefore, I learned not to “talk to strangers and not let them in my home” it’s better to be safe than sorry later
The West’s influence on morality is highly varied throughout our texts. For some, the West has inspired virtue; for others, the West has inspired corruption. As for religion, the faith we see in these texts seem to often be connected to luck and morals. In “The Outcasts of Poker Flat,” the outcasts (besides Uncle Billy) are clearly virtuous figures—Mother Shipton standing out for her selflessness in her sacrifice of her own food. Though we don’t know much of Mother Shipton before they are kicked out, it’s possible that her circumstances as an outcast spurred on that selflessness; outside of the confines of society and stuck in the danger of the western land, she has nothing left to lose. Meanwhile, the citizens of Poker Flat are turned toward corruption disguised as virtue as Harte describes, “It was experiencing a spasm of virtuous reaction, quite as lawless and ungovernable as any of the acts that had provoked it” (34). Here, the frontier justice of the West becomes an excuse to punish everyone that does not fit into ideal society.
Honesty is a huge part of everyday life, and carries a lot of burden in
One common trait that is seen throughout all individuals, is that all of them lie or in some way deceive others or themselves. It is seen that people are constantly lying, whether it is the smallest lie or even the largest. No matter how much a person remains truthful throughout their life there is a point where he or she lies. It is inevitable to avoid, people lie to gain something, to come into power, or to even mask the truth that they do not want others to hear (Bhattacharjee 1). It is seen in the two articles “Why We Lie; We like to believe that a few bad apples spoil the virtuous bunch.
I feel that doing what you say you will, and treating others as you want to be treated are principles that should not only be looked at as great strengths but as internal values that convey credibility. When people trust you and know they can come to you without judgment, it offers them a sense of security and peace.
It hangs just to the right of our fireplace in the living room, printed on brown and white brindle hide, surrounded by a light cherry frame with copper studs in each corner, still smelling just like your typical old west branding yet printed by a much more accurate laser engraver. This wall hanging just so happens to be ‘The Code of The West’. Hanging right in one of the most used rooms in our house and not able to be missed are the ten codes that in my opinion should still be in the forefront of peoples’ minds as they live each day. The very first code has always stuck with me and although only being a short five word phrase, it has truly had a meaning and been evident in my life ever since June sixth of 2010. This short phrase states to, “Live each day with courage.”
According to Dr. Charles & Dr. Elizabeth, words are cheap and actions mean everything. Everyone can say everything they want, but when they say and no actions, it totally means nothing. What they say and do is totally contrary, and this shows actions speak louder than words. For example, a person tells his friends that he can speaks and communicates well with the foreigners after few months in oversea, but in reality, it shows that he could not speak fluent English and communicate well with the foreigner. What he said is totally different from what he acts. What he said is totally a lie, because what he said is empty and it is worst without any actions.

I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate. I never knew until reading this chapter that we do these things all most every time we communicate. These are things I took for granted until now. I now know that I will pay
