The base of the word pentacle is the same as the base of pentagram, which could be why so many people confuse the two terms and use them interchangeably. Penta means five, simple as that, and cle is a reference to the circle, literally defined it means a small space. The pentacle is another five-pointed star drawn with a continuous line.
