During my short time as a peer tutor, I find that seeing other students gradually growing in their musical ability most enjoyable as a peer tutor. Many of the students in the class have close to no musical background and within a very short amount of time (just a few weeks). I find this quick growth to be very inspiring and being a part of that growth most enjoyable. Since I've started my peer tutoring, I find how comfortable the fellow students act when we talk to each other to be most surprising. Going into the peer tutoring, I expected the students to be more reserved and wouldn't share much with me. However, they open up quite easily with me and talk with me casually about everyday events as well as class work. I also find the rapid progression of musical skill through the class also very surprising. When I first started learning clarinet, it took a very long time until me and my class could even start playing music from the practice book. My host teach, Mr. McCann, Understands this concept and gives the students 15-20 minutes to practice pieces at their own pace. I've also learned that targets are important for growth. With targets, students know what they are expected to do during their independent time, and because of this they can plan what has to be done and how long they have to do it. I've also learned that teachers do their best to make sure students are, to a certain degree, engaged with the lesson. Teachers don't always pick students that have their hands up to answer questions, they pick students who they believe are not engaged or at the very least not interested. For example, the class I Peer Tutor consists of friends, international students, and grade 10 students. A fair number of students in the class are friends of mine and people I interact with on a regular basis. However, there is also a good chunk of students that I have little interaction with besides the class, most notably international students and grade 10 students. I usually have very little interaction with international students but with the addition of a Peer Tutoring class in my time schedule, I am able to talk with and get to know them. Furthermore, I am able to talk to the grade 10 students who are taking the course. As a grade 11 student, I usually don't share any class or am in close proximity to grade 10s apart from Peer Tutoring. If it wasn't for Peer Tutoring, I wouldn't be able to meet and talk with the wide array of students that make up my Peer Tutor

A good example of a time when I exhibited all three qualities would be during the summer when I served as a Tutor Counselor for Upward Bound at Mercer University. One morning, I woke up to two of my students knocking on the door because water was running through their ceiling. First, I found the source of the problem (a toilet overflowed from the third floor and poured all the way down to the first floor). Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. I was forced to change my thought process, view towards writing, and evaluate my own work over the semester. English 1010 was my first college writing course and it provided me with more freedom than I previously had in high school. During my senior year in high school especially I always felt limited and the topics we wrote about were not relevant. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice in each essay and I believe I developed more of a personal style as time progressed. Lastly by completing this course I accomplished my goal which was to learn the tools needed to produce well written work and become a better writer.
One of the benefits of peer tutoring is that it increases communication and social skills. The tutee will feel more comfortable learning, listening, and interchanging knowledge with a peer. Working with peers can also feel easier because they will most likely understand the position they are in at school and home. Watching a lesson occur from the outside rather than being taught or teaching was a great experience. Seeing how he dealt with the players problems gave me another perspective. It was a great way to learn about how to teach well and has helped me as I have a student I give private lessons to right now. We also discussed how flexible his schedule is and he showed me how he can rearrange it to meet with all his students and his classes he teaches. Another large part to the career is that he has to give back to the music world and play for others.
Helping people, whether it is through difficult times or to just achieve a goal, is one of the most rewarding of human experiences. However, with it being so rewarding, there is significant difficulty behind successfully helping someone. Luckily there are people that specialize in helping such as peer counsellors. Although helping does come naturally for some, certain things can be learnt to make one a better helper.
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
Maybe it is because that parents often say “spare the rod spoil the child”, and Instructors often time get to use to how they are treating their child so they’ll likely to do the same to their students. Or some instructor may just simply lost their work ethic. I think all of the teachers should respect every student, and every single student should be treated equally.
From the writer: I wrote this paper for Bobbi Kirby-Werner's Peer Consulting Practicum. The history and psychology of peer tutoring interested me because all the way through the class, I had wondered "Where did this method of learning/instruction emerge from?" The answer was of course, England. I also liked the idea that you didn't have to be a "professional" to be a peer consultant: that, in fact, the point was that you WEREN'T a professional, and because of this, it was in some instances much easier for students to relate to peer consultants. Which in turn helped them with writing.
In the process of completing this coursework, I have realised that every teacher should be all-rounded and equipped with adequate skills of educating others as well as self-learning. As a future educator, we need make sure that our knowledge is always up-to-date and applicable in the process of teaching and learning from time to time. With these skills, we will be able to improvise and improve the lesson and therefore boost the competency of pupils in the process of learning. In the process of planning a lesson, I have changed my perception on lesson planning from the student’s desk to the teacher’s desk.
