It was great to be back after a restful and much needed break. I thoroughly enjoyed the peer review task, and was looking forward to the team debate. At first I did not know how the debate would work, or what it comprised off, mostly due to it being an online debate. I read the instructions posted by the lecturer, and I was surprised to learn that it needed to be presented as a report with a presentation. I was quite familiar with this, since I did the exact same task for a module in my degree, which was also a group task. I was a bit nervous about this being a group task, because of the weighting of the marks towards the portfolio. I felt that due to previous experiences with peers not participating in the tasks, this group task may affect our workload and scores. I was, however eager to meet my team …show more content…
There seemed to be a variety of people from different countries in our group, which was aspiring. I visited the wiki to view the many topics given by the lecturer, which was interesting. There were a few topics that caught my eye, but we could only choose one. The other issue was coming to a decision as a group on which topic would be most preferable to all members in the group, which was a bit troublesome. We managed to come to an agreement and chose DDT. I was pleased with the choice of topic and impressed by the way in which my group came to a decision. I felt comfortable and confident in my group, which was refreshing. The group members introduced themselves and so did I. I was fascinated to learn about the different group members, especially the variety within the, which was pleasant. We chose a group leader to spearhead our debate task, and I was all in favour of our choice, as I felt he (Mahlatji) would perform an excellent job. We had done the basics, and the next task was to collect information and debate our points. I started collecting data right away and was excited to proceed onto the next
The process was good even if I found some difficulty in assessing a pseudo code that wasn’t too clear, I hesitated in the beginning on how to assess the assignment and what grade to give to it, but the solution given by the instructor helped me a lot in resolving this issue. The peer assessment process provided me, as always, a good opportunity to discover different views and new ways to resolve a problem or to answer a question or an assignment.

I thought that our discussion went well. We had a small group of about six people but three of us were leaders so we had a lot to talk about. Each of us went around and asked one question because we did not have time to discuss them all. But that did not matter because the other leaders had similar questions to mine. I was able to retrieve different responses from the others in the group for three out of my four questions.

We believe this was the moment our group began to transition into the Norming Stage. During this part of the assignment it was crucial for us to communicate effectively in order to ensure that everyone had an understanding of what was required from each perspective. Thus, once we began the research, everyone did a great job of keeping the group goal in mind by finding sources that could be used for every perspective. Additionally, each member kept their personal goals in mind and submitted the required research to our shared document at the agreed upon time. This was a perfect example of how we dealt with a group dialectic. Another dialectic arose when it came time to finalizing who would present each perspective. Some of the group members did not want certain perspectives because they did not have as much knowledge in that subject area as other members did. Furthermore, some group members did not want a certain perspective because their personal opinion might have had an effect on the assignment. In the end, we were able to balance the heterogeneous and homogeneous characteristics of our group members by asking questions, having trust and exhibiting strong communication
In week 7 our seminar leader allocated us into smaller groups of six to work together, get together and to start preparing for the mock debate in week 9 and the debate in week 10. When we started to get alone with each other, it was seen that it is not going to be easy to achieve our goals, not just because in our group had a strong activist, reflector, theorist and pragmatist, but we also needed to face some solvable difficulties as our first meeting of the week was cancelled by problem like the lack of communication, miscommunication and the ability to listen to another.

In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
Based on the small group that I joined in communication class, I will talk about what is working well and what is getting in the way in our group. Then I will discuss about what I can do to improve the group and the things about group project if there is a chance for a start over again. At last, I am also going to talk about what I think that I learned is an important lesson in this semester.
My strongest writing skills were illustrated with the expression and analysis of the benefits and the drawbacks associated with the group project. As team members we understood one another's abilities and trusted one another with the task handed too us. All of us where capable of giving the presentation all by our self since there was an ample amount of resources that SORC has to offer to students. But we divided up the topics evenly throughout the group so that no one felt left out. There was balance between the distribution of responsibility for ever member so the workload wasn’t on one person. The overall outcome of the project was that we learned a lot about SORC and how before SORC the clubs never really used the place very efficiently and it was just a space in the stamp that wasn’t used to its full potential.
I really enjoyed the group discussions, as well, and I sort of wish there was even more of a focus on them. Reading my peer’s perspectives and contributing my own thoughts about their posts helped me to consider the subjects from different angles and challenged me to think about the topics more discerningly. In conclusion, I really did enjoy the this group project. We had great group chemistry, an interesting topic, an effective and consistent preparation period. That sounds like a formula to a successful group project to me. This is probably the most enjoyable group work experience for me at Augustana so far. If I could, I would do it
