Music has played an enormous role in my life over the years, in both professional and casual settings, but perhaps the most rewarding and memorable moments have been through outreach and working in my community. As a violinist in the highest level orchestra of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, I have worked to reach out to the younger students of the organization and mentor them in their musical journeys. Since my sophomore year of high school, I have attended rehearsals and guided elementary-age children as they begin to learn the foundations of orchestral playing. Also, through PYP, I have had the opportunity to teach “peer mentor” lessons to middle school age violinists who are unable to afford to pay for lessons of their own. For my project, I chose to create a short, 30 minute concert for elementary-age children in their after-care program at school. Including my string quartet that I regularly perform with, I will allow kids to experience music in a way they may never be able to outside of this program. Through mixed media slides, videos, live performances of famous classical and contemporary music, and engaging activities, these children will hopefully gain a foundational understanding of the importance of classical music and enter into a world of music they have never before. I am extremely excited to create this program, and hope to see positive results from my planning and performing. One of the hardest things for me to discuss, especially in peer groups, is failure. I am so easily caught up in what others think about me, and I have difficulty with opening up and sharing how I truly feel. In the past, my biggest failures have been certain orchestral auditions that have led to not moving up in seating. I attended the Los Angeles Philharmonic classical music concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Friday 29 November 2013. The classical concert started at 8:00pm to the enjoyment of the huge audience that had been waiting for this amazing music extravaganza. Classical music concerts always offer magnificent entertainment and the audience in this concert was expectant to derive such entertainment or more. In attendance were Christian Zacharias who was the conductor and Martin Chalifour who was the LA Phil commanding Principal Concertmaster and Bach violin player. In readiness for the concert, I enjoyed a special dinner prepared for the audience. More specifically, LA Phil staffer introduced us to the evening classical concert amidst cheers from the audience. It was such a refreshing and joyous feeling to be part of this audience.
Many people across the world are affected every day by the gift of music. To those of us who let it into our lives, we truly view it for what it is. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes how powerful it can be. For me singing was something that I was always good at; I never really took it to heart. I never understood when people would talk about how music had changed there lives; I just didn't see how a few notes put together could affect anyone so deeply. It wasn't until last April when our choir was chosen among a select few to perform at Carnegie Hall that I would understand the indubitable impact of music.

In order to help spark that passion inside of others I must accomplish my first goal of obtaining my bachelor 's degree in music education and gaining my teaching endorsement for K-12. I intend on accomplishing this goal by attending the University of Nebraska at Omaha starting the fall semester of 2016. After attending UNO for 4 to 5 years I will begin my search for a high school instrumental music employment opportunity. Once I am employed I will be able to begin fueling the fire of passion in some students.
With school budget cuts, and no music instruments, more and more people are beginning to realize the benefits of having music in education. Providing music as part of education helps develop intelligence that leads to greater success in school and in life. Everyone from VH1 Save The Music to The National Association For Music Education agree that, “Every student in the nation should have an education in the arts.” These two companies are doing everything they can to get out the information about music, and the importance of resorting music education as part of the core curriculum.
Over the course of the semester, I observed at three off campus locations and experienced general music in grades K-5. In addition to my off campus experiences, I also observed Dr. Whitcomb’s in-class preschool demonstration. My final observation at the daycare on campus will not be included in this paper, as I will only be completing my field experience there a few hours before the submission of this journal.
I would love to organize a fundraiser that helps children who can’t afford musical instruments do so. Learning an instrument was one of the best things that ever happened to me because it allowed me to use my brain in new ways and to express myself. Music is one of the few things that connects people from all over the world. You can travel to a new country, not speak a word of the language, and still find camaraderie and respect through music: it’s a universal language of unity. It has the unique, unusual, and drastically underappreciated ability to promote peace and fellowship. Yet there are so many young people who can’t afford to pay for an instrument or lessons, and so they miss out on the opportunity to learn and appreciate music in new ways. By helping them do so, I believe that their lives can change and they in turn might change lives.
A peer mentor is a program collaborative with the FYE (first year seminar) to provide help for the first year student. To help student overcome the challenge transition to college life, Sacramento state offer a program that would help them adjust to the new start. This program launched during 2002-2003 and the program has grown from group of 5 to 39 peer mentor to serve and help first year students.

Music education plays an enormous role in student’s overall well being, outweighing the costs of it. In 1994, Congress passed the Improving America’s Schools Act, concluding that “...the arts are forms of understanding and ways of knowing that are fundamentally important to education” (Ford, AdamMcMahon, Maureen). Congress recognized the importance of music education. Now the effort must be made to make a difference. If people really do want the best for the future, music education is key. Ramon Cortines, former chancellor of the New York City public schools stated, “We engage in the arts, we ought to teach the arts, because this is part of what it means to be human” (“Arts Education”). When people eventually realize this, the benefits will be vast.
Helping people, whether it is through difficult times or to just achieve a goal, is one of the most rewarding of human experiences. However, with it being so rewarding, there is significant difficulty behind successfully helping someone. Luckily there are people that specialize in helping such as peer counsellors. Although helping does come naturally for some, certain things can be learnt to make one a better helper.
Even when children learn music they able to listen, sing, dance, create movement. Listening to music draw out emotions, and playing music can be just like communicating emotions. Some people find this a very powerful experience. “ Music enriches the lives of students and should be considered a necessary part of education.”

When music education comes to one’s mind, one may think that it only applies when it comes to listening to diverse songs and beating two drum sticks together to the beat of songs. However, there is much more of a deeper meaning to it than that. According to the acclaimed author, J. Yudkin, “Music education is a field of study associated with the teaching and learning of music. It touches on all domains of learning, including the psychomotor domain (the development of skills), the cognitive domain (the acquisition of knowledge), and, in particular and significant ways, the affective domain, including music appreciation and sensitivity. The incorporation of music training from preschool to postsecondary education is common in most nations because involvement in music is considered a fundamental component of human culture and behavior. Music, like language, is an accomplishment that distinguishes us as humans” (Yudkin 4). The subject of expurgating music education has been discussed for numerous decades. However, those discussing this fail to realize that music education not only has an imperative part in the students’ grades improving but also betters their behavior. Music education should remain in the curriculums of today’s students because it has a positive effect on their upbringing, in turn leading them to better, more fruitfulfutures.
