Throughout the Neoclassical Age, logic, simplicity and concord infiltrated all parts of society. In writing, it was implied that works should be rational and able to promote logical standards to the public. In spite of the fact that this movement was not viable in Spain like in France, there were works that incredibly showed neoclassical esteems. One well-known example of such works was Pedro Calderon de la Barca's Life Is a Dream (La vida es sueno). The play recounts the tale of Segismundo who was detained by his father, King Basilio, due to an astrological prophecy that he will grow up to be cruel and a rebel against the king. He is attended and guarded just by Clotaldo in a cave, where he is jailed, The play began when he is found by Rosaura …show more content…
Since it is the era of the revival or appropriation of classical works in then "new" times, the essence of its derivation should be considered. During the days of Greeks and Romans, astrology and duty are much of a talk as well. These themes are also present in the play. The character who exhibited the act of reasoning is Segismundo. From beastly, he became human when he let Costaldo off the hook instead of killing him. He changed after Clotaldo once reminded him that even in dreams, one should do great. Segismundo believed what Clotaldo has said and assured himself to control his wrath since maybe everything is a dream and life is a deception. He pondered deeply on what had happened to him in the court; he made a decision out of reasoning. King Basilio embodied the classical belief in the stars. Based of the philosophy of the Greek scholar Empedocles, nature affects human lives; involved four components or classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Astral bodies manifest the impact of these elements and, in turn, as far as anyone knows, direct a man’s destiny. The horscope reading demonstrated an omen when King Basilio examined the stars before Segismundo’s birth. King Basilio thought that it is right for him, as Poland’s king and Segismundo’s father, to take action and had his son jailed to control his

One of the crucial aspects of the play, is the quality and responsibility of civic responsibility that is of paramount importance, that all members of the Jury uphold this virtue obsequiously. As we analyse the story more obsequiously, we can prevail the personalities of the juror’s and a rough basis of their respected virtues are to be seen more evidentially. Although there are some jurors who do not exceed presumptuous assumptions in the jury room, some characters in the play already have a ‘pre-conception’, respectively, towards the initial accusation towards the sixteen-year-old boy.
...th Semele, leading to Dionysus’s desire for revenge that resembles Clytaemestra’s motives. He wants his mother’s family to pay off their debts, making women get so drunk unconsciously and later tricking Pentheus to go see the forbidden. In this tragedy Euripides aspires to demonstrate how even desiring to see the forbidden can deceive the most rational man. Both the rational and irrational plays a part in every person’s decision; it is how one decides to act upon a situation and demonstrate towards which side he or she tends to favor. Whether it is like Pentheus, a rational man deceived by his “inner Dionysus” commits an irrational act that took his life away, or like Athena, who introduces a neutral trial that rationally decides the consequences and gravity of the conflict when everyone that when a conflict arises and neither side sees eye to eye, there should be.
... the truth about his flawed and corrupt past which forces him to feel responsible for his actions, so he blinds himself fleeing from power, knowledge and blame. This play is very multifaceted because the entire plot can be interpreted in different ways, especially regarding the theology of fate or freewill, which changes the audience’s interpretation of Oedipus and the overall themes. Sophocles is able to convey the universal message of the human condition because it exposes that even though we may have an advantage through wealth and prosperity, in the end every person is limited in their comprehension of worldly knowledge and that every human is liable to error. The idea of knowledge and its burdens is shown by Sophocles through the medium of imagery, which helps develop and illustrate the themes of the play efficiently, creating a deep appreciation of the text.
Racism has resided within the Dominican Republic for centuries after the defeat of the Haitian Empire. Yet, the profuse racism came from the Presidency of Rafael Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo yearned to withhold the prevalence of white skin-tone in Dominican individuals. Trujillo initiated an anti-Haitian regime as he was determined to whiten his country. To present himself as a white Dominican, Trujillo wore makeup to lighten his appearance, to uphold his standards. Yet, the horrific, defining moment of his presidency was the Parsley Massacre. Trujillo started the massacre in 1937, as he sought to deceive his people by claiming the Haitians were practicing witchety, while claiming they kept a Dominican opponent in hiding. Dominican troops slaughtered
This paper contains 237 words of teacher’s comments. What one perceives is influenced by one’s environment. The setting and commentary surrounding events changes our perception of them. Any innocent gesture can be perceived in the wrong way with enough persuading from someone else. Even if someone has total faith in another person's innocence, they can be persuaded to doubt them through the twisting of events. Once just a small amount of doubt has been planted, it influences the way everything else is seen. This occurs throughout the play, Othello. In this play, Iago influences Othello's perception of events through speeches and lies, making him doubt Desdemona's fidelity. Iago uses his talent of manipulating events to exact his revenge on Othello. Iago's twisting of events in Othello's mind leads to the downfall of Othello as planned, but because he fails to twist Emilia's perception as well, he facilitates his own eventual downfall.
The theme of reason versus emotion can be found by analyzing individual character’s actions in William Shakespeare’s Othello. However, the line between to the two decision-making mindsets is not always very apparent. Three characters – Iago, Desdemona, and Othello – will be analyzed to show that Shakespeare wanted to blur the line between reason and emotion and demonstrate that individuals do not necessarily operate with only one or the other.
Aristotle continued to express a tragedy arouses both pity and fear, pity for the doomed hero and fear for all humans who are subject to the same forces and weakness. It would not be difficult to discover that Othello demonstrate weakness and fear in the play, and Shak...
The novel Pedro Paramo, by Juan Rulfo, presents a situation where the reader is not being told something in a straightforward, linear manner, but rather is provoked with questions from many points of view in order to bring the reader into the story. Though the novel begins with a traditional first-person narrative from the protagonist’s point of view, this frame story is soon overcome with other voices, memories, and associations that progresses into a timeless, fragmentary collection of viewpoints by the novel’s end. This development of many different points of view, rather than relying on a single narrative arc, provides an open perspective of not just one protagonist’s personal journey, but a shared experience; a collective experience in

Aristotle is the most influential philosopher in the history of Western thought. A Greek drama by Sophocles, Oedipus Rex, was praised in the Poetics of Aristotle as the model for classical tragedy and is still considered a principal example of the genre. In this essay I will analyze Oedipus Rex using Aristotle's concepts praxis, poiesis, theoria.
Aristotle’s tragic hero is made up of three requirements. The protagonist of the play must be a person of high estate. This allows the protagonist to fall from power or happiness to create a tragedy. The next requirement is the protagonist mus...
The Tempest by William Shakespeare, among other themes, is a play very centered around rivalries, an important one being the one between Prospero and Caliban. As one would naturally expect, the triumphs and failures of the ongoing conflict yield different reactions for the two different characters. The conflict illustrates a dichotomous view of the way in which people respond to failure or defeat. Whereas Caliban responds to defeat instinctively with furious acts of retaliation, Prospero reasons that when those kinds of acts are examined under the scope of logic, they appear to be unlike that of a noble and therefore, should not be undertaken.
...ith the lack of closure the author has paved many paths, making one unable to give a proper retelling of the play due to various interpretations. The play has also slyly inserted a philosophy on human life, the uncertainty and how it is a major part of human life is portrayed through this play. All these characteristic together make this play a very good play, it makes one want to live forever as to see what future generations would interpret the play as. In conclusion, this text is written to make the readers think and participate as active members in the reading of the play.
Hieronimo is a symbol for the authority of law within The Spanish Tragedy. From his soliloquy in act III scene II, one can see Hieronimo’s ambiguity in deciding whether to pursue either justice or revenge. It could be argued that Hieronimo’s actions and concerns change throughout the course of the play by the wills of others and not his own desires; thus representing the failed authority of the law. This can be shown by analysing Hieronimo, Bel-imperia, the Gods, Lorenzo and the Law.
