Imagine a six month old infant is screaming all night and well into the early hours of daylight. No one understands what is wrong with the infant. The infant goes to the doctor. The difficulty with infants is that infants cannot explain their symptoms or pinpoint what is hurting. A specific doctor that has a degree specialized in caring for children is required to find out what is hurting this child. Pediatric Nursing is a specific field of nursing in which they are carefully trained to care for infants and adolescents (Study). An infant is a child typically up to the age of two. Adolescents are ages ten through nineteen (Bisk).

Pediatric nurses have dedication, patience with children, and attention to detail. They need dedication to work long nights, weekends, holidays, and time lost with their own families. Dedication is crucial to this career. A pediatric nurse will need to have an abundance of patience with children. It is a challenge to work with children and they must be willing to work with even the most difficult children and parents to provide the necessary care (Bisk). Patience is the key to success when working with children in any field. Paying attention to even the smallest details and symptoms could save a child’s life. There is no symptom that is too small to be reported to the primary care provider. Obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and passing the licensing exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN) must be done first. Ill children are extremely difficult to manage as patients and have the tendency to have a rapid change in status while patients in the hospital. Working the ER I have had many pediatric patients, but the parents always remain with the patient. When peds patients are admitted, hospital protocol states that the patient must be present during the transfer of the patient to the admitting floor.
