Holding my baby in my arms for the first time, seeing her looking up at me with her wide eyes, brought tears to my eyes. At that moment I knew that if, God forbid, anything should happen to her, I would go any length to protect her. Becoming a parent myself made me realize the agony of a parent with a sick child and it consolidated my already growing interest in the field of pediatrics. My desire to heal and nurture sick children in particular started when I volunteered at an establishment for special children. I was shocked to see, for the first time, a child with massive hydrocephalus who could not even move due to the weight of his head. Seeing children die from malnutrition and dehydration in the Pediatric Emergency had a huge impact on my conscience and I was hit with the realization that most of the conditions children were affected by, in our part of the world, were preventable. I learned the importance of prevention and early detection in pediatrics during my rotation in Pediatrics Infectious Disease in the US. This was best illustrated by preventing the transmission of HIV from mother to baby or early detection and treatment of HIV positive babies from childhood to adolescence to prevent increase in viral load. I am comfortable with diverse groups of people and want to do what I can to help them all, especially children. That, I believe, is the most important trait of a physician. Along with that, the abilities to work under stress and time management come naturally to me. Nothing better exemplifies this than having had medical school exams 2 weeks before my wedding and my USMLE step 1 in my 36th week of pregnancy. Being the captain of my college girls' basketball and volleyball teams also taught me about teamwork and leadership. Finally, having tutored students of O’ levels, I have polished my teaching skills which will come in handy in the learning process with my fellow residents and juniors. Throughout medical school I took an interest in clinical research in a variety of genres, starting off by investigating the prevalence of antenatal obesity in pregnant women of lower socioeconomic classes, to being part of a clinical trial on the benefit of using drains postoperatively after thyroidectomy.
