The past week has been a whirlwind of emotions, and I am pretty exhausted overall. Throughout high school and my undergrad I never thought I would actually make it into the PDP Program so it definitely feels like a huge accomplishment just getting through the first week. The first day, despite being extremely tired from just having flown back from New York, I felt really proud to be sitting in a room full of people who share the same passion of teaching with me. One speaker that really resonated with me was Chris, because he had just gone through the program, and the passion and energy he had made me excited for my upcoming year. After completing the inspirational teacher write-up, I was amazed at how many of the goals my inspirational teacher had mastered. I enjoyed linking up actual concrete examples of what this teacher does to the PDP goals statements. One of the things that has been very apparent throughout this week has been the collaborative nature of teaching. When I look back at my experience of volunteering in his classroom, I realize how much effort he put into getting administration and other teachers together to come up with cross-curricular activities and reconstructing new policies for things such as plagiarism; goal four is related to this because it is based on the commitment to maintain ethical and functional working relationship with all members of the educational community. I always saw my mentor as a great teacher, but now I also see how amazing he is as a collaborative member of the teaching community. After coming home from Burnaby North Secondary, I felt really happy with my decision of becoming a high school teacher. I am intrigued with Palmer’s premise in The Courage to Teach, simply “good teaching cannot be reduced to techniques; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.“ In a time when education reform is focused primarily on pedagogy, he sheds a light on the many different elements that go into being a good teacher. He also asks us to think about what makes a good teacher or a good mentor, as I reflect on the classes that I have enjoyed the most, they are those where the teacher thoroughly enjoyed what they were teaching, but also teaching itself. I feel the areas that I have touched in this paper along with my personal philosophy statement, reflect my views and opinions as a future educator. I have spoke about areas that are of importance to me, and ideas that I feel will make a difference in someone’s life. As a teacher, I truly want to make a difference and teach students the importance of an education, and the opportunities that are available to them. Education can take people places and I feel more people need to come to this realization.
As a future educator, I am willing to learn and improve. Although there were assignments that I found challenging, I was willing to ask for assistance and work my best in overcoming and completing those assignments. An assignment that I found challenging this semester was having to write a book review on “Inside Mrs. B’s Classroom”, by Leslie Baldacci. Although the reading itself was not difficult, what I found challenging was having to time manage when I would read the book, and having to write my first essay in APA style. However, I knew that assignment would benefit me in the future in the manner of learning how to write a paper in APA style and practicing my time management skills. Considering the qualities of a leader, I believe I succeeded in my field experience and my collaboration skills. In my field experience I was able to learn the importance of listening to every student and the teaching of procedures. Furthermore, this semester I was able to work in collaboration with my peers. For instance, in my seminar class we had a group presentation, and we were able to excel in organizing and presenting. Additionally, I was also able to work in collaboration to create and present the micro-teaching lesson. I have been a classroom teacher with the same school division (and its legacy divisions) for twenty two years. I have therefore, been an active participant and witness to the multitude of changes and growth that have enveloped the realm of education and my school division. My role in the classroom has mainly included English and Arts instruction at the grade 11 and 12 levels. I have considered it an honor to be one of the last teachers involved in a student’s K-12 education and have deeply recognized this important leadership role, guiding our students by way of instruction and by example, through their final educational stretch and empowering them to be leaders themselves. I feel that I have helped to create a society of learners where students are being constantly challenged, where they experienced meaningful personal and educational growth and were empowered to celebrate their accomplishments whether they were big or small.
As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.
It’s funny how quickly time flies by it seems like just yesterday I was complaining about writing the first part of this assignment. Looking back at it now, the reasons why I want to become a teacher remain the same. I want to inspire, shape, encourage, and mentor my students. I want to make the kind of impact on each and every single one of them that they will carry on for the rest of their lives. Whether it be simply believing in them, and telling them that I know they are capable of accomplishing anything they want to, or helping them through a tough time. My desire to become a teacher has increased tremendously the past 16 weeks, and I am so eager and excited to finish my education to begin my teaching career.
Based off of the data I have collected from my field notes one and two I will be comparing and contrasting aspects from both pieces such as social business and rich points. These aspects are identified by analyzing the conversation itself, which includes influences such as gender, power, and group identity. These instances in which I observed can help to provide an understanding of much larger issues of power, identity, and value in the world we live in today.
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I aspire to see a student’s ability to grasp the knowledge they never before understood. I aspire to see a student succeed at something they never thought they ever could. I aspire to not only support students with academic skills, but also with life lessons about the value of community, pride in one’s own ethnicity, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and more. A teacher today needs to have an ability to relate to and create partnerships not with their students, but also families, administrators and other professionals. This ensures that all persons involved with the education of the student are on the same page. A group of band kids can all aim for a final goal, but each person grows as a musician and gains a broader perspective along the way. I was one of those band kids, and I still am. In conclusion, us teachers must find ways to reach the minds of every individual by allowing them to express themselves and understand every lesson taught. My goal as a teacher is to provide to in each and every student with the necessary skills and knowledge so they could succeed on their own. I want to leave a memory of myself as a teacher who was not afraid to roll up the sleeves to help another student in any way and influenced others to do the right thing. My colleagues recall me a teacher who regularly participates and who was active to contribute assistance to the school community.
With the proper guidance and support, teachers can achieve academic excellence in the classroom. They follow their principal’s vision and share their goals. Teachers also serve as leaders in their classroom. They share their vision and goals with their students promoting positive attitudes in the classroom. Just like it is important for principals to respect and understand what their teachers need, students also need the support, understanding, respect and empathy from their teachers. When teachers demonstrate commitment in the classroom and set high expectations they raise the level of learning in the classroom. Teachers that work with the students and their parents to understand and meet their needs will achieve positive academic outcomes. As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion.
