Paul’s Case: Sleep Deprivation In the short story “Paul’s Case: A Study in Temperament,” Paul is a troubled high school teen. He was recently kicked out of school and does not have the greatest relationship with his father. As a result, this young man takes his life because he just cannot handle life anymore. Many teens struggle with stress which could result to sleep deprivation. Students can be kept up late at night finishing work, resulting in little sleep. Paul is just an average teenage boy in high school; however, he is very stressed for an ample amount of reasons. He does not have a mother figure, school is very stressful; therefore, he gets in trouble and thrown out of school. A giant issue in Paul’s life could very well be sleep
deprivation. For example, in the story, Paul sneaks into his own house but is then unable to fall asleep due to worrying about unrealistic situations. “He was horribly afraid of rats, so he did not try to sleep, but sat looking distrustfully at the dark, still terrified least he might have awakened his father… With this last supposition Paul entertained himself until daybreak.” ( Cather 108-109) This shows just how stressed, and sleep deprived Paul is. He struggles with many ideas and is kept up late at night constantly, leading him to be sleep deprived. Paul escapes his hometown by traveling to New York. He steals money from the bank, stays in a fancy hotel, dines pleasurably, and spoils himself. During his stay in New York, Paul has many late nights and early mornings. For example, on his journey he receives very little sleep. “ Paul had slept very little, and he felt grimy and uncomfortable.” (Cather 113) This goes to show how little of sleep Paul was running on. Every night in the hotel he got very little sleep, which lead to sleep deprivation. The average teenager should get around 9 ¼ hours of sleep every night (Sleep in Adolescents 1). Paul receives much less sleep than an average teen should. Numerous times he is kept up until 1:00 am or later, then wakes up fairly early. This goes to show he is a sleep deprived teen. Two signs of sleep deprivation are trouble thinking/concentrating, and mood changes (Watson and Pietrangelo 1). Paul decides to make a life-changing decision at the train station when he takes his own life. As a sleep deprived teen, he had trouble concentrating and made decisions without thinking them through. As a result, the teen jumped in front of a train, resulting in a suicide death. Sleeping less than 5 hours a night increases the risk of all deaths by 15% (Davis 2). Paul was not in a good state of mind at the time, running on too little sleep, resulting in him making a poor decision. Sleep deprivation is a very large problem, especially in teen adolescents. Many teens feel stressed at night resulting in little sleep, which leads them to be sleep deprived. Teen brains do not function properly when they do not have the proper amount of sleep. Moreover, in “Paul’s Case,” Paul is a troubled, sleep deprived teen. As a result, he does not think situations through as he should; therefore, he takes his own life by jumping in front of a train.
“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure”- 2 Corinthians 12:7, (KJV). To help get a better understanding of how other translations translate the beginning of this verse, which they say, “To keep me from becoming conceited.” We as Christian’s, human beings living on God’s earth, indeed love attention, accolades’, and praise. In the above-mentioned scripture we have here, Paul has received a special gift in which he can receive revelations from God. In his revelation, Paul receives a thorn in the flesh. There are many speculations on what the thorn was; we will elaborate on that a little later in the paper. The focus as of yet, will be on humbling down of Paul and how this passage of scripture starts out. I think we often miss this point. The point being, we concentrate on the thorn and oh, how we speculate what it was. If you look at the start of the verse “least, I should be exalted or conceited above measure,” clearly displays Paul, in humble adoration. In his writings, he would often make it evidently clear that it was nothing he was doing or could do, but it was always about Christ. What a lesson for Christians today if we could “set our minds that there will be thorns along the way” (Gleanings from the Corinthian Letters), nevertheless it is about Christ. Christ himself was not conceited or prideful and his pattern should be emulated. However, the rhetoric Paul here follows is the pattern of Christ in complete acknowledgement of giving oneself completely.

After his conversion to Christianity, Paul traveled throughout the Roman Empire and preached the Gospel, similar to Jesus’ own ministry across Galilee. Paul’s teachings were more focused on the community and the relationships of its members with each other and with non-Christians, whereas Jesus’ teachings were geared towards the individual and his/her personal relationship to God. Despite this discrepancy in their doctrines, Paul’s teachings remain consistent with those of Jesus. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, Paul’s teachings, such as unity in the community and love for others, echo the teachings of Jesus as depicted in the Gospel of Mark and Matthew. Paul essentially reiterates the teachings of Jesus, and applies them to the lives of the people he preaches to, so that they may understand Jesus’ teachings and embrace Christianity.
Stress is the biggest factor for sleeping disorders. A lot of students have trouble sleeping at night because of stress. Their workload, financial worries, and self-esteem give them stress through out the day keeping them up at night when they are trying to sleep. On the other hand, I believe that even though Jesus and Paul may present the Gospel different at times, they are still advocating the same religion. It’s interesting studying Psychology from the perspective as Jesus Christ being the Chief of all psychology. It is already known by Christians that Christ is the Co-Creator of humankind. Genesis 1:26 (NKJV) states, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all of the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth”. However, the Christian’s outlook regarding this passage of Scripture is usually very limited only considering the exterior creation of mankind. When God made humanity, He also created the mind of man. Who can better give instructions to the people which walk this earth other than its Creator? Eric Johnson emphatically shares, “God created all things and continues to hold them together by the word of his power” (pg 46). Nothing was made without Him, including the mind which exists in man. It is crucially necessary for psychologists who profess a relationship with Jesus Christ to also consistently be in prayer to have the mind of Christ while being responsible for their areas of professions.
Sleeping is something that is an essential part of human nature and is a must in order for one to be a functional human being. Sleep is an idea that is accompanied by many wives’ tales, including the ideas that one needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night and alcohol helps one fall asleep and sleep more soundly. One myth about sleep is that during sleeping, one is in a state of nothingness. In truth, however, it has been discovered that during sleep the brain is active, variations in heartbeat and breathing occur, and the eyes and ears are active throughout the time of sleep. These activities during a person’s sleep are important because they help that person be more aware, awake, and alert during consciousness. If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially in college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator to their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related the level of performance and health in an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).
In the year of 2003 there are many types of religions that are practiced in the United States, which involves a God, or a divine power. My personal preference of religion is Christianity. I believe in Jesus Christ and the all mighty God Jehovah. The characteristics of a God varies from religion to religion, but all leading up to love, an everlasting peaceful life, and salvation; therefore, giving strength to all human beings that believe in them and has faith in them.
