The poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” would be an excellent text to read in a academic history or English class. Not only does it provide mostly accurate information about the night of Paul Revere’s ride, but it also incorporates a bunch of poetic elements. Additionally, “Paul Revere’s Ride” is also fun to read since it has a fast rhythm and uses descriptive language. The fast rhythm when Paul Revere is riding to Lexington to alert the Minutemen, allows the reader to almost imagine the horse galloping and the panic Paul and his friends were feeling. The descriptive language adds more to the reader’s imagination. With these 2 elements combined, it really gives a small sample of the setting during Paul Revere’s ride. So it’s a win win for both the student
The first poem I think you should consider in adding to your list of poems is “For the Fire”, this poem was about the time I went in to the forest to get some lumber, and during my time there I noticed some of natures creations around me, like the kookaburra and wind that swerved in and out of the trees etc.
The object I chose in the Lightner Museum is a painting with a gold frame. The medium in which it was created is oil on canvas. Featuring this piece is a man on a seat in front of a podium. He looks around the age of fifty, wearing a black cap and glasses. His clothing consists of a collared shirt, a coat, slacks, long socks to his knees, and black shoes. In one hand he holds a small book, which he appears to be reading from, and in his other hand he carries a brown stick about a foot in length. Standing in front of the man is a boy about ten years of age. He is standing with very straight posture and his hands by his sides. The boy is adorned with a blue vest, a white collared, long-sleeved shirt and brown pants. To the right of the man is another boy with his head resting in his hands. He is sitting on a bench and appears to be sobbing. There is a boy ducking behind the podium with his hand cupped beside his mouth, inferring that he is whispering something secretly to the boy being addressed by the adult figure. The rest of the children in the classroom-type setting sit behind desks in the far right corner of the painting, each sharing a collective look of mischief and laughter. There also appears to be a chalkboard on the back wall of the room, and some sort of picture hangs above the board on the same wall.
Two of the readings assigned that stuck out to me were the detailed journals of famous European explorers Christopher Columbus and Samuel de Champlain. These writings discuss their observations and experiences during their explorations to the New World. “Letters of Columbus, Describing the Results of his First Voyage” by Columbus and “From the Voyages of Samuel de Champlain” by Champlain both contrast in their opinion of the worth of the New World’s lands as well as their interactions with the Natives that these explorers came across.
One of America’s oldest railroads, known as the first common-carrier railroad, was chartered on February 28th 1827, by a group of Baltimore businessmen. The main objective of the railway was to ensure traffic would not be lost to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, which was proposed and ground broken the same time as the railroad. The new railroad was a big invention, which allowed people and freight to travel by train. This was a huge improvement for the United States, since everything was becoming more advanced in other countries. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company is the great railroad that owns up to the big title of “The First Common Carrier.” The B&O railroad has a rich history dealing with its background, building, competition, growth tactics, numerous raids, and involvement in the Civil War.
A poem that I have been studying recently is Assisi by Norman McCaig, which I found very interesting to read because it made a statement which relates to our world today even though the poem was wrote about thirty or forty years ago. The poem has lots of ideas including effective figures of speech, good choice of words, important images and irony. The statement that McCaig makes is, where ever there is great wealth it always exists along side great poverty.
Smelcer, my high school history teacher. My teacher dedicated a whole month of class on the topic of “Black Lives Matter.” She loved to read books on opinions on black society. I think this book would fascinate her if she has not already read it. She always taught us about the struggles of African Americans, but never about the privilege that some of them had. Some African Americans were better off than most whites at the time. They were doctors and lawyers, most of the black elite were making salaries close to middle class Caucasians. The book shows how not only how whites look down on the African American racial background, but so did people of their own race. I think this simple fact would be intriguing to my teacher and maybe challenge her views on black society. It could also contribute to her lessons in class, teaching high schoolers about this exclusive society. Lastly, I would recommend this book to Mrs. Smelcer because it proves that while the members of the black elite had “privilege and plenty” they were still racial discriminated against by whites, even through they should have been
Paul Revere's Ride is a collection of historical accounts centering around Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the countryside of the battles that occurred. The novel is made up of narrative accounts that tell the whole story of the midnight ride. David Hackett Fischer goes to great lengths to cover every possible angle in telling the story. "Fischer illuminates the figure of Paul Revere, a man far more complex than a simple artisan and messenger"(3). By adding different perspectives he allows the reader to see not only the American idealistic point of view, but we get a chance to hear British accounts of these particular events. In this way Hackett Fischer paints an accurate and unbiased picture not only of Paul Revere and his ride, but also of many other supporting historical figures that were important in making these events happen.
During the 1800’s, America was going through a time of invention and discovery known as the Industrial Revolution. America was in its first century of being an independent nation and was beginning to make the transition from a “home producing” nation to a technological one. The biggest contribution to this major technological advancement was the establishment of the Transcontinental Railroad because it provided a faster way to transport goods, which ultimately boosted the economy and catapulted America to the Super Power it is today.
After already sharing my thoughts of my family, and myself, I felt as though neither of my favorite personal interests would accomplish the task at hand. A half hour later, I have a page with many scribbles, no topics, confusion, and thirst. I walk swiftly and irritably, to the refrigerator, open the door, and grab a cold, wet, Coors Light, tall can. Carry Your Own Skis by, Lian Dolan Arthur Ashe by John McPhee, and Dreams by Langston Hughes are three of my favorite texts from the textbook this semester because of all the messages they portray. The reason why these were my favorite’s texts is because I was able to relate to them one way or another. This is very important to do in literature. Connecting to the texts can help us understand them more. This is why some texts become more popular than others. For example, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Everyone who has ever been in love can relate to this story. The feelings expressed are ones often felt by people everywhere. The more a person can relate to a story, the more important it is to them.

The poem I read was "From the Hazel Bough" by Earle Birney. This poem paints a great picture of a specific situation and also represents an aspect of life that I am sure we all have experienced in one way or another. In order to get the full affect of this poem, you have to clear your mind and envision the close details that Birney is using in the descriptions of the characters. This poem has to be read line by line.

An example of one of the short stories associated to the Civil War period is “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury. This short story distinctly obtains the human passions and agitation during the Civil War period and it also deals with actual history in human details. Therefore, “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh helps the reader interpret what it was like to be in the Civil War period in American history (White, 1993).
The Transcontinental railroad could be defined as the most monumental change in America in the 19th century. The railroad played a significant role in westward expansion and on the growth and development of the American economy (Gillon p.653). However, the construction of the transcontinental railroad may not have occurred if not for the generous support of the federal government. The federal government provided land grants and financial subsidies to railroad companies to ensure the construction. The transcontinental railroad contributed to the formation of industry and the market economy in America and forever altered the American lifestyle.
