In Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem, Sympathy, He grasps the all-inclusive cry for freedom, the theme of African American literature since black poets first began writing poetry. Dunbar uses the greatest power that he has, his words. In this poem the speaker begins with a sentence that is direct and describes his feelings from the beginning, which is “I know what the caged bird feels, alas,” the word alas meaning and expression of grief or sadness the speaker is feeling for the caged bird. In this poem the speaker represents the black Americans of that time in the vivid description of the caged bird and its experiences. This poem expresses the birds longing to be free, and the longing of the black Americans to be free also. After describing the deep feelings the bird has, the speaker exclaims that he too knows why the caged bird sings, because he is theoretically a caged bird himself. The speaker in the poem metaphorically becomes the caged bird that beats his wings against bars that do not give. However, the poem is much more than the tale of a caged bird longing to be free, it goes much deeper into history and the deep heart felt feelings of oppressed black Americans. This poem follows the abaabaa scheme, emphasizing a pattern within each stanza, where the first line is set up in a connection between the speaker and the caged bird. The poem features repetition, or near repetition, in the first and last lines of each stanza to further emphasize the degree to which the poet depicts the caged bird. As the poet goes deeper and further along in his poem, the story unfolds into a harsh contrast between the feelings of the caged bird and what black Americans faced in that time period. “I know what the caged bird feels, alas!” (1), the first... ... middle of paper ... ...spair. The poet is showing the birds deepest feelings and the speaker feels the same, he too pleads to heaven for freedom. The poem ends with,” I know why the caged bird sings!”(21), the speaker is telling the reader that he knows the struggle for freedom that the caged bird endures, and why the bird sings to heaven for deliverance, because he too prays for release. In this poem the poet tells his and all black American’s struggle to have the same freedom as the white people with the contrasting, vivid tale of a caged bird that sings for freedom to be out in the beautiful nature surrounding it. I believe the title of the poem,” Sympathy”, is the feeling that echoes out of the poem as you read it, sympathy means an understanding for another’s sorrow, and the poet whole-heartedly understands the birds struggle and he knows why the caged bird keeps singing for freedom.
While reading, I felt a sense of sadness for the caged bird, as its undeniable determination was persistent and valiant. Along with the message of the poem, I also appreciated Angelou’s unique sense of “unstructured verse” and her non-traditional poetic approach. It is clear that the caged bird represents African Americans and the free bird represents the white population, however, the poem is well written which sends this implied message of African-American suppression in a poetic, yet clear,
Like “On the Departure of the Nightingale”, the flight of the bird also symbolizes the removal of the song, and the loss of the creative force for the poet; the nightingale is free to escape from a world of decay and death, while the poet is forced to suffer in it.
To begin with, the poem Sympathy suggests to the reader a comparison between the lifestyle of the caged bird, and the African American. Paul Laurence Dunbar’s center of attention of Sympathy is how the African American identifies and relates to the frustrations and pain that a caged bird experiences. Dunbar begins the poem by stating “I know what the caged bird feels, alas!”(African American Literature page 922). This shows the comparison of a caged bird to an African American. Dunbar wrote this poem with vivid, descriptive, and symbolic language throughout the entire poem. Dunbar uses this vivid, descriptive and symbolic language to stress his point that some one tied up in bondage and chains is not privileged enough to enjoy the simple but unique parts of life. In the first stanza of Sympathy Dunbar wrote:
Dunbar finishes off the poem with powerful lines: “But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core, But a plea that upward heaven he flings— I know why the caged bird sings!” The caged bird is depicted as battered, bruised, and beaten from his violent rebellion— praying as his last chance of freedom. Moore begins the last stanza with an ambiguous “So”. Although one has a heightened awareness of mortality, one “behaves,” one keeps the ego disciplined. This is the same concept as that of the caged bird who, though held captive in a cruelly small space, continues to sing with all his heart. Despite the bird's lack of “satisfaction” because of his loss of flight and freedom, he knows “joy”.
Furthermore, Maya Angelou’s poem, ‘Caged Bird,’ there is a heavy usage of imagery to contrast the lives of the free and caged bird. For example, the first stanza includes vivid details about how free and easygoing the free bird’s life is. The text includes, “A free bird leaps/ on the back of the wind/ and floats downstream…” “...and dips his wing/ in the orange sun rays/ and dares to claim the sky.” Evidently, this bird can openly travel through the wonders of the world, such as streams and beautiful skies; there seems to not be a care in the world. However, the reader gets a peek into the life of the caged bird, who has a multitude of challenges and sorrow. Maya Angelou’s excerpt from her book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” reveals the challenges facing a young black girl in the south. The prologue of the book tells of a young Angelou in church trying to recite a poem she has forgotten. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Maya Angelou clearly expresses the physical pain of sexual assault, the mental anguish of not daring to tell, and her guilt and shame for having been raped. Her timidity and fear of telling magnify the brutality of the rape. For more than a year after the rape she lives in self-imposed silence, speaking only very rarely. This childhood rape reveals the pain that African American women suffered as victims not only of racism but also sexism.

I chose these three poems because the subject matter appealed to me and I believe that the poems convey their meaning very effectively. Upon researching the poems, I discovered that Caged Bird was in fact inspired by Sympathy, which accounts for the similarities in language and imagery, as outlined below. All three poems deal with the subject of freedom using the imagery of birds; On Liberty and Slavery is narrated as a human plea for freedom, and makes reference to birds in that context, whereas Caged Bird and Sympathy both use the imagery of caged birds to explore the theme of loss of freedom. The symbolism of birds is used to depict freedom, as birds are essentially without constraints; in comparison to the limitations of humans, they have limitless possibilities. When a bird is caged, however, it loses that potential and is restricted not by its own limitations, but the limits set by another.
In the “Caged Bird” Angelou’s comparison to the caged bird was African-Americans in the society they were living in. She symbolized the bird with African-Americans experiences. In the second stanza the poem states “But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing”. This is comparison to African-Americans in their society. When African- Americans were enslaved they use to sing songs to uplift their spirits because that’s all they could do. They were physically bound and mentally brain-washed. The songs was there way of showing they still had fight left in them. In the fourth stanza it states “The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own”. This is saying the while African-Americans were enslaved and oppressed they watched Caucasians be free and do as they pleased. Although at the time African-Americans never experienced freedom they yearned for it. They knew it had to be better then what they were enduring. Racism is considered the cage around the caged bird, and it means not getting treated fairly with jobs, medical treatment, and even get
