Politician, Patrick Henry, in his speech “Give me liberty, of give me Death” given at the meeting of the Convention held at the Houses of Burgesses in Richmond, Virginia. Before saying anything he builds his accredits by acknowledging the President, and the people that he’s addressing. Henry’s argues the people need to take a stand to gain their independence, and the only way to do so was war. In Henry’s speech he emphasizes the need for freedom, and he encourages the colonist to go to war and gain their independence from Great Britain; for it was God’s plan for them to do so. Henry’s use of repetition “we” creates an appeal of pathos that compels his audience to have an emotional feeling of being relevant to a group even though he is a well known politician. As Henry states “Sir, we have done everything that could be done, to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament.” By Henry using the word “we” it makes the colonist believe that they’re on the same level as a well known politician. Making the colonist more prideful in themselves to know that this well known man as Henry is putting himself in the same category as them. By him using this approach it created the sense of unity appealing to their emotions. The use of pathos help Henry in many ways in this speech, simply by his word choice effectively strengthening his argue. Henry uses pathos in two different methods. He tells the colonist that they are viewed as weak by Great Britain. By saying, “They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary.” This quote is referring to “they” as Great Britain, and Henry is telling the colonist that Great Britain the enemy is calling them weak. The use of the word weak was to anger the colonist. Henry used the word weak only to appeal to his audience emotions. His word choice was effective because it made the colonist want to stand up and show Great Britain that they were not
