Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, took place in Verona in the mid-1590’s. In this town, two families hate each other. This hate has been sustained from generation to generation. However the son and daughter from the patriarchies of both the families did not find hate for each other, but instead they fell in love. When Romeo first saw Juliet at the masquerade ball they instantly fell in love. However, the hate between the Montagues and Capulets only grew throughout the play. Romeo and Juliet were not allowed to be together. The rivalry and disgust between the two families was responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
The two families have hated each other for many generations. The play starts off with a sword fight between the Montagues and Capulets. During the fight, one of the Capulets started ridiculing a Montague. In Act 1. Scene 1. Line 71. Tybalt shouted, “I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee coward¨ to Mercutio. Both of the families hate each other so much they would be willing to fight with swords. Tybalt who is part of the Capulet family said that he

would rather be tortured in hell than be around a Montague. You could tell from that statement that this was not an average trash talk before a sports game. This hate has derived and preserved from generation to generation. The hate from the two families increase throughout the play and leads to death. At the end of the play, Act 3. Scene 1. Line 100. Mercutio says, ¨but 'tis enough,'twill serve: ask for me to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man.¨ to Romeo after Tybalt stabbed him. These events lead to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. When Mercutio was killed, Romeo acted hastily and killed Tybalt. Then he was banished from Verona. This lead to the downhill spiral of the suicides of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet, who is a Capulet, loves Romeo who is a Montague.
However they could not be together because they are from different families. If one of the people in a family would be tortured in hell than be around the other family, then certainly two people from different families could not love each other. Both the Capulet’s and Montague’s had this type of thinking. After Juliet fell in love with Romeo at first sight, she asked her nurse to find out what family he is in. Her response was, “His name is Romeo, and a Montague, the only son of your great enemy.¨ As the play goes on the families hate increases. Because the Capulets and Montagues had this mindset, Romeo and Juliet were not allowed to be together. If the families did not have such hate for each other they could have been together. With that alone there would have been less blood shed and less
heartbrokenness.

In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, a quintessential pair of teens fall in love, but their fate ends in misfortune. The pair falls in love in a time where women are seen as unimportant and insignificant. In spite of this, Romeo breaks the boundaries of male dominance and shows a more feminine side. Throughout the play, there is an interesting depiction of gender roles that is contrary to the society of the time period.
Throughout Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, there is an overlaying presence of the typical roles that men and women were supposed to play. During Elizabethan times there was a major difference between the way men and women were supposed to act. Men typically were supposed to be masculine and powerful, and defend the honor. Women, on the other hand, were supposed to be subservient to their men in their lives and do as ever they wished. In Romeo and Juliet the typical gender roles that men and women were supposed to play had an influence on the fate of their lives.
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy of an ancient feud where the children of two families at war fall deeply in love with each other. Set in the 16th century William Shakespeare’s play has many different themes running throughout it, which include love, hate, death and conflict. The play opens with a fight but ends with suicide that creates peace between both families who unite from their losses. The conflict, violence and aggression in the play happen from revenge and an ancient family grudge. An audience from the 16th century would have enjoyed Romeo and Juliet because of the real life drama and tragedy the play goes through. The patriarchal society gave women absolutely no rights and they had to obey their man’s ordering a patriarchal system. The theme of conflict is revealed as the characters argue over Juliet’s disobedience.
Romeo and Juliet has different roles for different genders. During the Shakespearean period, when Shakespeare writes, most women had to marry when they were teen, when they were in adolescence or even before. However, the men who they were marrying were in their early to late twenties. In the household that the women lived in, the men basically owned them. The women always followed men’s word, which says that the male was the dominant gender of the society. Romeo and Juliet reflects this in a number of ways. Juliet was forced to marry Paris, by the word of her father, who said that if she did not marry Paris, she would go to the streets(Shakespeare, 3.5.154-62). Women were thought to be weaker and less important than men in Romeo and Juliet because men are trying to be the strongest out of everyone, women have a lower social status, and men think they owned women in Romeo and Juliet.
The Elizabethan era gender roles were much different than they are today. Women were regarded as the weaker sex, and men were always dominant. These “rules” are shown prominently throughout Romeo and Juliet, and paved way for obstacles they went through in their relationship. The gender conventions for women and men were prodigiously stereotypical and unreasonable, as they made men out to be the superior gender. Women should not have been perceived as inferior to men, and these unwritten rules for masculinity and femininity were shown throughout the play. Romeo acted very feminine which contradicted his gender conventions while Juliet did not abide by rules and disobeyed her parents. Romeo and Juliet had many ways in which they followed and
The play Romeo and Juliet is a widely known tragedy written by Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet features two rival families and their children. When a daughter of Capulet and son of Montague meet at a party, sparks immediately fly. However, because of their family rivalry, they married in secret, and were happy. That is until things took a turn for the worse.
Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, where a boy and a girl fall in love with each other during a party hosted by Juliet’s father, Lord Capulet. The two teenager decide to get marry, despite their family's hate for each other and only meeting each other a few hours ago. However, the Montagues (Romeo’s Parents) and the Capulets end their feud after they discover that their children killed themselves. Romeo and Juliet’s death was caused by Juliet’s parents, Juliet, and Friar Lawrence.
In Act 3 Scene 1, Romeo experiences a range of losses-one of which is the death of his best friend Mercutio, at the hand of his rival Tybalt. In contrast to the aggressive tendencies of Romeo’s bloodline, his initial reaction was that of a man who is ashamed and feeling a loss of masculinity. Blaming his new found love for making him “effeminate” suggests to the audience that the guilt (which is obvious through the feeble attempt he makes at excusing his actions) is also making him question his virility. The fact that “effeminate” is said in a demeaning manner exhibits the sexism which is too a common theme throughout. In contrast to this original action, Romeo quickly turns vengeful- perhaps in an attempt to restore the masculinity he felt he lacked- letting “fire eyed fury” be his “conduct.” The alliterative phrase “fire eyed fury” can be interpreted by the audience as a vicious rage, “fire eyed” suggesting that when commencing upon this range Romeo wasn’t acting like his true self.
Firstly, the Capulets and Montagues are at odds with each other. Members of each house and servants break into a sword fight, clashing with each other. Sampson says "Draw, if you be men. Gregory, remember thy swashing blow." (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 60). The feuding between the two families motivates Sampson to challenge the Capulets. Another example of how the two houses despise each other is what Romeo and his friends have to do to get into the Capulet feast. So they will not be recognized, Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio wear comic masks to hide their faces. Mercutio says, "Give me a case to put my visage in" (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 29). They do not want to be recognized because of the hatred between the two houses. Also, Romeo and Juliet are not supposed to be in love: "My only love sprung from my only hate! / Too early seen unknown, and known too late! / Prodigious birth of love it is to me, / That I must love a loathed enemy." says Juliet (Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 137-140). They are not supposed to love each other because it just so happens that each of their houses despise each other. It is unfortunate for Romeo and Juliet that their two families are against each other, because this means that they are not supposed to be married.

Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet in the 16th century, at a time where the role of the woman was to be subservient to men and act as a wife to their husband and a mother to their children. Women were expected to conform to the expectations of society, and were seen as possessions by their fathers and husbands. Fathers arranged their daughters’ marriages, usually for financial or social gain for the family. In Romeo and Juliet, the unfair treatment of women is conveyed through characters such as Juliet, a young girl who is growing into the expectations of society, and Lady Capulet, who represents a traditional side of love and values social position rather than men themselves.
