There are numerous pathways to university studies; how each pathway effects student success and retention is of particular importance to higher learning institutions. The first year of university studies brings significant changes to the learning experience due to the more autonomous nature of university learning compared with earlier years of schooling. `Direct entrants in transition: becoming independent learners’ published in 23 August 2013 by Hazel Christie, Paul Barron and Norma D’Annunzio-Green. These students lacked awareness of how to succeed in the new learning environment and were shocked when the realities became apparent. University studies required the students to develop initiative and take a self directed approach to course work and the group three students did not respond well to the required change in approach and lacked adaptability. Time management was poor among the group three students, potentially due to their lack of awareness of the inherent requirements of university studies. Group three were not as proactive in seeking assistance, not as engaged with the learning processes, spoke of isolation in the learning environment and entered their studies
When one enters a new academic discourse community, they experience a rite of passage, a coming-of-age passage. The rite of passage is the process of the individual’s detachment from their former community, preparation for this new phase of life, and the reappearance into society except with a new status. In this case, the new status is student of higher learning. In any case, the rite of
Study groups can help students to study and receive high grades, because college classes are definitely more difficult than high school classes. Students might have more freedom and time to finish the corresponding work, but at the same time professors expect more from students. Many professors would expect you to have all the time in the world to finish up your work. High school to College is a big milestone in student’s life, because they are required to learn to manage their own time; to find what the best schedule is for themselves. During the two week course, we’ve talked so much about the transitioning into college. All those mental preparations is to ensure students are able to handle college work, by focus on time management, class scheduling, and procrastination. Transitioning to college from high school it’s almost just like middle school to high school, more expectations from teachers, AP classes, and tier schedule. If something was not handled correctly, grades will start to drop, and when students’ grades drop it can lead to high level of stress; high level of stress lead to lower grade, and it will continue the ban wagon. To maintain grades high, students should schedule enough resting time, so when they are in class; they are able to pay attention. Students should also never miss any classes, because they can miss a lots of information in one day. These are
In the last few years, studying abroad has become an increasingly popular choice for higher education among international students (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). An average of 10% of students in universities all across the UK are international students from countries all over the world. (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). Although the experience is different for each individual student, there are many common problems that international students face. Those problems include: culture shock to varying degrees coupled with emotional issues(Bailey, 2005), Language barriers along with other communication problems (Sherry et al, 2009), and academic problems due to a change in school curriculum (Ramachandran, 2011). This essay will expand on the common problems faced by international students in the UK, offer solutions for handling the problems, and making the process of acclimating to a new environment easier for students.
Everyone wants to better themselves in life…right? No one wants to graduate high school and be stuck living with their parents or only make minimal wage. There are plenty of ways to have a better life, one in which is attending college. If a person attends college, they have a more likely chance of making more money, being more successful, and securing their future financially. Going to college not only leaves someone with better opportunities but it can instill in a person responsibilities, persistency and work ethic. All of these things are important unless a person is born into a rich family and are automatically given a job, the rest of civilization has to work and that is where college comes into play.
As an adult student, it is not easy to manage the demands of work; spouse and children; and the need to set aside time to read, research, write, and complete specified assignments. The biggest complaint conveyed by adult students is that they simply don’t have enough time. The fact is time management is crucial so you don’t lose sight of your goals. Students’ time is a limited resource. Like other limited resources, time can be more or less effectively managed (Britton, 1991, p.405). It is hard to address my perspective of my own procrastination and my ability to learn. Now that I’m older and looking at the facts of where I am now in life, I should be a lot further in my college goals. Many young adults wish someone sat them down early in life and guided them in a wiser direction. A college degree is essential in the career world.
About eight students interviewed about causes that led them to earn academic warnings or to be placed on academic probation. Even though all of the students were previously successful in high school, they were not able to maintain required GPA in college. Most of the students admitted that they were not able to manage their time and had very low self-motivation. Additionally, some of the students responded that they were not used to facing challenges in high school and, as a result, did not know how to deal with stress that was arising from the challenges in college. Basically, the main idea of the research was to show that not only time management and motivation are important for average students, but even for the ones who were considered as far above average and had high achievements before entering
This calls a need for people especially students in college to warm up to the fact that if they are unable to manage their time appropriately while in school it is apparent that as they transition into their working life they will demonstrate the same effects still while on the job.
Changing can be the biggest obstacle many student will have to face while attending a University. Students will have to learn how to be on their own, and on top of that learn around what people to associate them self with. In Alfred Lubrano essay “The Shock of Education: How College Corrupts”, he explains how many students struggle with parents and friends while attending college. However, Lubrano goes on to say that depending on cultural ethnicity will determine how the years at college will change a person. Parents have spent about 18 years to mold their children the way they want, but the moment they enter college it seems to deteriorate into pieces, because of all the new material the students are learning.
What contributing factors affect student motivation towards success in college? Motivation is a force that helps people to achieve what they yearn to be, which helps people conquer obstacles to reach a goal. Students can be physically present in the classroom, but mentally absent. Many things can play a factor in student academic success from the quality of the professors’ lecture, to sufficient and modern facilities or the effective engagement between student and professors. In many researches including the books Lives on the Boundary by Mike Ross and Academically Adrift by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa it demonstrates factors that students face in the achievement of academic success. Those factors that coincide on student academic success are motivation, life responsibilities, and preparation.
It had been very difficult to start out in the world of Business Administration as a student during this rough economic time. Many students have had a difficult time getting involved in the business world due to the low demand in jobs and internships. This is a big issue because it does not allow students to understand the real conflicts and agreements that have to be made day by day in the business world. Another thing is that it also limits their views to understand this same world.

College students must find time in their busy schedules to study. In order to keep up they must do daily assignments. Reading every night helps to prepare for the exams. Taking notes in class and out of class are also necessary. Students also have exams at the end of the semester that require hours of studying. Waiting until the last minute and then cramming it all in is often a final resort. Many students who have kept up just go over and recall the information. All students must find time to study in order to pass.
In today’s world, education has been a primary preoccupation in order to have a bright future or a decent job. In education, students have different study habits/skills, which depend and vary between individuals. Some prefer readings instead of attending class, other favour taking notes, some might choose to listen, but in fact, most students choose to use multiple skills in order to succeed. This study will focus on college student’ study skills and their relationship with their academic performance, as well as some factors that impede using study habits.
The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education. Fortunately for me, I became aware of these things much earlier than my peers around me. However, being aware of these things was only a fraction towards success. Over time I’ve realized that the most critical part of success was gaining the discipline and willpower to apply these lessons and concepts.
