The Passion
“It is important to convey to people that everything we do in the agriculture industry is done in a responsible manner.” (Christie Gabel). Christie Gabel is Senior Territory Manager for cattle and equine in northern Colorado for Zoetis, one of the largest animal health companies in the United States. The agriculture industry has many different pathways within it; after all it is how we feed the world. Like many people, Christie did not know what pathway or career she wanted to take, she just knew she wanted to be involved in the industry and be successful within it. Many people find their passion later in life, but like many other people who grow up in the livestock and agriculture industries, they find their passion for it

The company plays a major role in educating, and helping producers to feed and raise healthy livestock for the consumers. In the study on the Effects of vaccination against respiratory pathogens on feed intake, metabolic, and inflammatory responses in beef heifers published in the Journal of Animal Science, used many antibiotics from Zoetis. At Zoetis, Christie spends a lot of time with vets, feedlot producers, and feed stores. She talks, and educates them on antibiotics, designing health programs, and how to maximize feed yards. She is very passionate about conveying to producers that in order to have healthy livestock they need to practice safe ways of vaccinations, and medicines. One of the many parts of her job she likes is getting to communicate with customers, farmers, and ranchers in production agriculture. The agriculture industry gets criticized all of the time for many reasons. One of the most important aspects Christie thinks is important to convey to people not involved in the industry is that the welfare and well being of our animals is the producers number one priority. Now sure, producers need to do a better job of educating consumers, and making sure they feel comfortable when consuming their product. One of the most important aspects producers need to do a better job of is being able to verbalize and be knowledgeable about some of their practices. By growing up in the agriculture industry it becomes a passion for many people and most want to become advocates that can explain why the industry is so important to not only the people involved in it but also the people not involved
There are many issues regarding the raising and producing of various livestock animals, and the use of pesticides on various types of crops. The movie Food.Inc does a good job explaining these issues, but in a very biased way. It makes agriculturists look like terrible people, when this is not the case.
Agribusiness is a growing profession across our nation. Each year our Legislature introduces new farm bills requiring additional need for in-depth studies and introduction to the ever changing farming system. The ranch manager becomes the caretaker of crops, livestock and other animals. A lot of their time is spent outdoors and in meetings with farmers and government agencies. They are basically on call, whether they are tending to farm matters; working and meeting with government agencies; and/or speaking to local communities sharing various farming techniques, they are constantly busy. Pollan believes that American factory farms are places with technological sophistication, where animals are machines incapable of feeling pain (368). In other words, factory farms use plentiful of technology where they do not pay attention to animals feelings. For example, beef cattle who live outdoors are standing in their own waste, and factory farmers do not considered that wrong and unsanitary. Hurst alleges that “turkeys do walk around in their own waste, although they don’t seemed to mind”(5). This shows that factory farmers think that animals really don’t have feelings and really don’t care. Pollan also disagrees with industrial farming because he states that, “American industrial farms itself is redefined- as a protein production- and with it suffering” (369). He affirms this because industrial farming cages their animals. Interestingly, both authors believe that animals still die and suffer no matter what circumstances an animal is living. Pollan believes animals should be treated with respect and not be caged. On the other hand, Hurst asserts that “farmers do not cage their hogs because sadism, but because being crushed by your mother really is an awful way to go, as is being eaten by your mother”(6). So Hurst say that he cages animals to protect them. Also both authors believe that there needs to be ways to enrich the soil, so the farms can have bigger harvest, healthy plants, and keep cost down. However, Pollan believes that farmer should use compost. He states that “the finish compost will go to feed the grass;the grass, the cattle; the cattle , the chickens; and eventually all of the animals will feed us” (370). So he thinks compost is good for the farms. Hurst on the other hand, think manure and commercial fertilizer is good for the farms. Hurst spread poultry litter on pasture and this made cattle production possible in areas

In the article, “On Eating Animals,” Namit Arora explains that for much of our settled history--and even today in parts of the world--most people lived in close proximity to farm animals. Animals fertilized our crops, shared our labors, and nourished our bodies, helping us enlarge our settled communities.” (Arora). Animals were once like a family member. People would tend to their animal’s needs and make sure they were well taken care of just like any other member of the family. We would give them names, show them at county fairs and make sure their living conditions were comfortable and as sanitary as possible. The seemingly simple term “rancher” is commonly misinterpreted. The term rancher may bring to mind a guy riding a bucking bull or horse in a western movie or maybe a tough looking guy without much brains raising cattle on the prairie. Other people think of a farmer. Actual ranchers specifically raise cattle, while farmers raise crops, hogs, and poultry. Modern ranchers are hardworking men and women who live off the land raising cattle for consumers. Despite popular beliefs, it takes a lot of knowledge to raise cattle. American ranchers use business and technology skills to raise cattle. Even with these skills, they are still at the mercy of Mother Nature and gamble with her every year.
On one of my parents’ first dates together, my father described cattle they drove past as “amazing creatures” telling my mother someday he would like to have land and livestock of his own. As doubts of economic possibilities of farming and ranching continue to decline, the true farmer still respects their land and practices. The general stereotype of farmers and ranchers is poor stewardship. Historically, hunters and farmers were more interested environmentalists than compared with the liberal, urban vegetarians of today. However both share the same conditions for living and breathing. This creates confusion between needing and wanting within a typical household (Kingsolver, 2003).
According to dictionary.com, “any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling” constitutes something as a passion. Passions can be either positive or negative. In my life, my passions influence my actions and my goals for the future. My goals have been a part of my life since I can remember and there are certain personality traits and motivators of mine that push me to accomplish these goals. My passions have originated from events I have gone through and realizations that I have come to. Cruelty toward animals, huge economic problems, and major health concerns are just three reasons why factory farming should be banned worldwide. Many people argue that factory farming is the only way to meet growing demands for food in the world today. However, factory farming is just not necessary, especially when it comes down to killing innocent animals in order to feed people. A way to put an end to the factory farming system is by buying our food from smaller, sustainable farms. These businesses still aim to profit from their labor, but that’s not their only objective. (The Issues: Factory Farming, n.d.) They simply will not sacrifice the health of the land or the quality of food simply to make a few extra dollars.
Every time a person goes to the store and buys some food that food was grown by a farmer or contain ingredients from the farmer’s crops. A farmer is a good job because the work they do helps to provide the world with food. Without farmers many people would go hungry not knowing how to grow their own food. Without farmers many other products other than food would be gone. Farmers work hard long days and often go unnoticed; however, without them life would be much different.
