The song Let Her Go by Passenger, includes many different types of literary devices. The most valuable literary devices used in this piece are metaphor, juxtaposition, imagery and symbolism. Firstly, Metaphors are a commonly used literary device throughout the song by the composer. Metaphor is when a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object. Passenger writes: “You only need the light when it’s burning low” (Line 4). The metaphor means privilege, and how many times in life we only truly understand the power and meaning of something once we lose it. This lyric also represents that we need the things we love the most after we lose them. Another literary device used by the artist was juxtaposition. It proves juxtaposition because being high which is used as another word for happy is opposite from being low, another word for sad. This allows the listener to feel the contrast and make a comparison between the two. Lastly, imagery is also a literary device used by Passenger to enhance the song. Imagery is when the composer/author uses words to carefully describe a certain thing it also to describe something with a lot of detail. Imagery is used in verse 3: “Staring at the bottom of the your glass” (Verse 3). This is imagery because the lyrics are allowing the listener to visualize a certain image. The listener visualizes the bottom of an empty glass. This shows that there is nothing to stare at because there is nothing left. Whatever was in the glass is now gone.
