Question 1 What are some distinctive advantages of a qualitative strategy for data gathering, such as participant observation, over more quantitative approaches? What are some specific procedures followed by those conducting participant observation studies? Discuss some of the special considerations participant observers must be aware of when studying criminals in field settings. Answer The process of participant observation allows the researcher to study and gather data in various ways. For many years participant observation has been the baseline used in numerous fields of study such as anthropology and sociology. However, in more recent years there has an increase in the number of qualitative studies for information and data gathering purposes. There are several advantages to participant observation such as: • It affords access to the "backstage culture". • It allows for richly detailed description, which they interpret to mean that one's goal of describing "behaviors, intentions, situations, and events as understood by one's informants" is highlighted. • It provides opportunities for viewing or participating in unscheduled events. (Kawulich, 2005) Participant observation was formed from the theory of symbolic interactionism. This theory assumes that people are constantly in a stage of interpretation and definition. …show more content…
One important practice that is essential in field studies is the keeping of extensive and detailed field notes. Good note taking is key to a successful field study. A good investigator records observation as often as possible and does not rely upon memory. As much importance and time should be allotted to recording observations as to participating, observing, and gathering such information. (Hagan, 2018) Another special consideration would be visual criminology. Visual criminology consists of taking photographs during a field
The problem behavior associated with individuals making bad food choices when presented with unhealthy food will need to be observed so that we may understand how to change this behavior as it is unhealthy and harmful to health overall. Are poor choices in different foods causing obesity? Making poor choices when it comes to food is an
Symbolic interactionism perspective is defined as “the study of how people negotiate the meanings of social life during their interactions with others” (Rohall, Milkie, and Lucas, 2014, p.27). It asserts that “we construct meaning about things that are important in our own lives and in our society” (Rohall, Milkie, and Lucas, 2014, p.28). These meanings derive from social interactions among individuals which
Symbolic Interactionism approaches things differently. With Symbolic Interactionism, we analysis how certain objects or events have interpretations pre attached to them. Whether
Observation allows researchers to experience a specific aspect of social life and get a firsthand look at a trend, institution or behaviour. It promotes good communication skills, improves decision making and enhances awareness.
Interactionism focuses on the basis of social life. Social life, on a whole, is comprised of the constant communication and exchange between people in various ways as well as settings. The center issue of this theory is symbolic interactionism, which works to explain the individual in a society and their interaction with others. Symbolic interactionism takes symbols of any all kinds amongst people (linguistics and extra-linguistics) and puts it under a microscope to understand the meanings people assign to things and the role it plays in the way they interact. A society is able to maintain order through shared
Participant observation is a method of collecting information and data about a culture and is carried out by the researcher immersing themselves in the culture they observing. The researcher becomes known in the community, getting to know and understand the culture in a more intimate and detailed way than would be possible from any other approach. This is done by observing and participating in the community’s daily activities. The method is so effective because the researcher is able to directly approach the people in the community in a natural context as opposed to taking the participant out of their environment. The aim of participant observation is to gain an understanding the subject’s life from their perspective, with the purpose of collecting more detailed information about a community’s habits, opinions, relationships and issues.
PROMPT 1 Middle and higher education are my work contexts as a teacher. Ethnographic observation seems to be hard to plan and apply since most of my students have a part-time job and they do not spend much time at home. Ethnographic observation demands a lot of time and planning. However, it is worth it since it provides teachers with the opportunity to develop themselves as researchers and to improve their professional practices. It allows teachers to know students contexts and the marginalized literacy practices they perform.
Thinking about normal social interactions and normal social behaviors, I think of comfortable. When I sit down with a friend, a usual routine is followed, “Hey, how are you, what’s new?” (e.g. My turn, your turn). These questions between my friend and I include eye contact, attention, and facial expression. Usually, I feel that I give my friend my undivided attention. Other normal characteristics include: remembering what the person has just said so a comment can be made, as well as each comment is appropriate and in relation to the current topic. Moreover, the duration between each question or comment is short.
Interpretive perspective says that the social world is created in an ongoing manner, via social interaction. How do we relate to each other on a day-to-day basis? It focuses upon micro-level.
The observational method is when researchers use their senses to observe, examine, and record behaviors in a natural setting. This means there is no interruption or manipulation by the researcher. In order to enhance this type of research,
Mrs. Smith arrived to her appointment on time, alone, appropriately dressed, and appeared to be her stated age of 54. Throughout the testing process, she was engaged, maintained good posture, eye contact, insight, understanding, awareness of issues, and discussed topics in an open manner. In addition, she spoke with a normal tone, rate, and volume. Mrs. Smith did not exhibit any issues with her hearing, vision, motor skills, or word finding. Her mood was calm and composed, which was congruent with her affect. In addition, she exhibited a logical thought process, and did not display any signs of psychosis.
Symbolic interactionism is “often considered the sociological variant of social psychology” and is the study of “face-to-face social interaction via naturalistic observation” (p. 161). In summary, all three articles express the importance of using the domains in combination for maximum impact. “ The interchange will help: to provide psychological sociology with necessary microsocial and psychological sophistication, to operationalize and test aspects of symbolic interactionism and to relate them to relevant structural and psychological concepts or theories, and to exchange the external validity and relevance of current work within psychological social psychology while also opening new avenues for experimental investigation” (House, 1977, p.174). Conducting a participant observation allowed me to develop insight into the group and build a relationship with the other group attendees. When I arrived to the facility, I signed in at the front desk of the health clinic. I then sat in small waiting area, which
Qualitative research was designed as a way to be directly connected with the subjects researched. Participant researchers may choose to merely observe and collect data or to be an active participant. Covert participation has the advantage of reducing the “reactive effects” of the social setting or group (Bachman & Schutt, 2012). Most researchers who use the participation method of research will often strike a balance between participation and observation. Through participation, an observer may gain the trust of the research subjects which can provide more fruitful results. Some research may however be unethical or a violation of law. A good researcher should use prudence beforehand when crafting their research design.
The purpose of their research is to acquire ethnography data. They anthropologist obtaining qualitative data and observing how the people they are researching are living and their day -to-day activities. Some of their methodology includes participant observations in which the anthropologist is involved in the day-to-day activities to observe from first-hand experience of how the people live.
