The following essay explores the factors that have an impact on the development of individuals to promote long term involvement in sport and physical activity by reviewing a range of literature and sporting frameworks. It has been said that positive developmental outcomes have been experienced in young people who are actively engaged in sport. (Fraser-Thomas et al 2005) The factors that influence this positive development can have an impact on whether young people remain involved in sport long term.
Concept of Development Models
Development models are focused around participant development in sports and physical activity. It has been suggested that sports development frameworks have participant development as a central aspect which then covers the activities,

Further to this point the model has been described as basic “Fundamentally, this is a generic model rather than an individualized plan for athletes” (Ford et al 2011) suggesting that this model would need to be tailored to individual sports and athletes for it to be effective.
Participant development model
Currently used to support the UK coaching framework, the participant development model “is aspirational: it reflects how the participant population could be thought about and structured, rather than how it actually is. It is a model for participation in sport, rather than a model of participation.” (The National Coaching Foundation 2009) This was developed as a generic development model that governing bodies could adapt to suit their own sports and uses similar principles to the LTAD
While this is not completely true, sports develop people in many ways still, some people say that “sports make me what I am today.” While it is impossible to prove exactly the way each individual takes in sports, it is seen that overall it has some positive effect. Sports are a tool of development and instead of it being a choice between sports and academics, the real answer is both and that they work together to constantly develop quality generations of people. Though problems exist, the true qualities of sports maintain the role they have in developing young ones.

One of the many benefits of playing sports is the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will obtain new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute). This is a benefit because they will build character from learning how to deal with wins and losses from playing sports. Also, they will develop different skills. Developing different skills will build character because, “numerous positive developmental indicators have been associated with sport participation, including improved self-esteem, emotional regulation, problem-solving, goal attainment, social skills, and academic performance,” (Holt). This shows how when children play sports that some of them acquire different skills than others. Figueroa’s framework has been developed to be an influential part of analysing one’s access and equity in exercise, sport, and physical activity (text book). Many social factors directly or indirectly shape opinions and influence an individual’s decisions to participate in physical activity, additionally these factors change throughout an individual’s life (Crossley, 2013). The individual, interpersonal, and institutional level of Figueroa’s framework have all significantly impacted my sporting pathway/career and will be examined further throughout this essay. Through these findings, I will also reflect and predict the level of framework that will primarily influence my future participation in sport.
Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. Most professional athletes have been playing their specialized sport since grade school, and although impressive, the people we are rooting for are wearing out quickly. Although youth sports programs are a health benefit to society, they also pose disadvantages to a young person’s growth and development.
Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
The seminars would include such topics as how to maintain control of one’s temper, how to involved a coach should be in a player’s life and where the boundaries are, and also how to use positive reinforcements rather than negative. The coaches would need to go through this training before every new season of their respective sport to stay current on the techniques, as well as be reminded of the importance of being aware of how problems can arise if bullying may occur. Another important aspect of this program would be the evaluation done on the coach’s performance as a coach by the players. These days, there is too much pressure on children who participate in organized sports because of the unnecessary parental involvement they experience. A growing concern amongst those involved in youth sports is that certain aspects of parental involvement become detrimental to the development and experiences of young athletes. Early emphasis on winning, making money, and the disruption of education can exceedingly affect ones desire to further participate in a sport later on in his/her life.
Coalter et al. (1994) illustrated that those who stayed in education after the minimal school leaving age had higher rates of sports participation than the school leavers. This statement inspired the author of this review to research, and essentially ascertain what implications and constraints occur in an adolescent and adult environment when considering participating in sport.

Psychologists can look at how the competitive nature of youth sport affects the lives of those who participate in them, which can then effect how the general population looks at youth sport.
