HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS AND PART-TIME JOB
Part time job is something not so strange for American students, as students have been taking up extra jobs to fund their private needs for a long time. However, this does not mean there is no debate about the advantages and disadvantages of part-time job. Some says that having a part time job will reduce students’ score at school and may lead to stress in life. In “Part-Time Work Ethic: Should Teens Go For it?,” Dennis Mclellan argues that part-time job can actually help students a lot if it is done moderately. Personally, I agree with his idea: part time job can give learn how to be independent and find their own paths into lives thanks to part-time job. However, over-commitment to part-time jobs

Many students these days have no idea what they want to do and their future jobs are determined by social trends or families, not by their dreams and abilities. Many grow up having to do the jobs that they hate and become unhappy in life. For that reason students should try out the jobs they want to have first before deciding that they will make that job their dream job. And the best way to do so is to have part-time jobs. If a student finds that he or she loves working in a clothing store, maybe he or she would want to pursue a career in fashion. In the article, Shelley Staats also claimed that her work was providing her some experience for her future job. Staats used to be a secretary for a Century 21 office, cashier for a marine products, and worked in the department store etc.. She has taken many kinds of part-time jobs. Finally, she found out that she was really interested in fashion industry and wanted to work in fashion merchandising in her future. Therefore, through working various part-time jobs, students will learn what they are looking for and what they are not looking for in a career. Things will be easier for them comparing to others: they know what path to take and what will they do, unlike many who will struggle with the majors they do not like in school and the job they do not like in
In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni shares his strong belief that working, especially at McDonald’s type restaurants, is bad for teenagers. I would agree that working is not a good thing for teenagers under some circumstances but at other times it is good. First, jobs affect school involvement and attendance in bad ways. Second, jobs often provide “on the job experience,” but much of the time the experience taught is useless. Third, fast food jobs may provide a disadvantaged status. Fast food jobs can also provide an advantaged status. Finally, workers can learn to manage their money by making mistakes with money before they get into the Real World.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
Etzioni emphasizes on three negative effects of teenagers part-time employment on education. He highlights that fast food jobs impede with education, do not convey new skills, and alter youngsters’ moral values and work principles. Further, the writer continues in following paragraphs giving appropriate ideas to support each of his claims. Etzioni depicts the American convention with respect to teenagers’ employment. The essay utters that youngsters’ employment was a conventional way of teaching “self-reliant, work-ethic-driven, productive” in young people. He then goes on providing a synopsis of the variation from the standard in the current situation. Etzioni also accentuates on the positive effects of teen jobs in terms of raising money for college for poor
Students’ wouldn’t be able to hold down a job is the second reason they shouldn’t dropout of high school. Many employers would like to have someone who has been too high school and that have been educated so they can handle money and add things p...
Many students believe that they can handle having a part time job and being a college student at the same time. For some students having a job and being in school can be manageable but there is some students who believe they can manage their personal life and school at the same time. In the talk show Tedx Talk with David Ray, Ray mentions that students with jobs tend to struggle more in college and have more of a chance to drop out, when he states “students have to work part time jobs or multiple jobs to pay for tuition and they do less school work”. College is worth it for the students who know how to manage their personal life with their school life but sadly there is students who do not know how to manage their time appropriately and end up dropping out of college which results to losing
Others who had sports activities they start skipping their daily activities and soon they decided to quit because of the work. Author states, “who begin as part-time employees in fast-food chains drop out of high school”. I totally agree with him because when teenagers start earning the money they start focusing more on the work, so they can make more money. So they work more hours including the weekends also. By doing this they don’t pay attention on their studies and their grades start dropping down. Eventually when they get overloaded with work and studies, they decided to give up and drop out the high school. He states, “Learning is not automatically educational or wholesome”. I think author trying to say that working on the cash register doesn’t mean that you will know the counting 1-100. In order to know how to count the money or greet the customer, you need to go to school. It can give teenager some experience of the cash register but it will not provide them the accountant job. In order to have the accountant title or job, they need to go to the school and finish their
Firstly, having a steady job can have stable income. In now’s society, money is one of the most important thing, especially for an adult. In average, an American family can spend 51,100 dollars a year, which include transportation, food, entertainment, education, housing, insurance, clothes and some others. And a thirty year-old person can earn 54,305 dollars a year. So if a person has a full-time job, he is able to afford the family’s expends. Having stable income can also provide people safety, because money is necessary for living. Doing one job constantly can improve a person’s ability. Because getting used to a job need time, and be a master of the job takes even more time. While doing the stable job, people can explore new things, new method and give more sophisticate ideas to keep challenge oneself. Doing a steady job can also provide working experiences, and it is like having an insurance for the future. Because the boss will know more about the person, and know what kind of job he is good at. Then the person can at least keep the job or even luckily, get a promotion. Because there are so many benefits of keeping a steady job, people should not follow the dream.
Today high school student is getting the job experience by working at McDonald’s or other fast food restaurants. Working a McDonald’s is not an easy job because the shift hours are not stable and income is not very high. High scholars are thinking that working at a fast restaurant is going to gain an income easily, especially for those in a middle class family that needs a part time job to support their self. It might be a bit of a struggle for the high student to learn to manage their time schedule between school and work. In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni believes that high school students working at McDonald’s can destroy their future. He explains very clear through his point of view that if high school students choose to work at McDonald’s or any fast-food places, it would be a waste of time because they only take advantage of them. Etzioni think that these high school students are set for low paid job because if they don’t continue with their education path then they are stuck or don’t have any other opportunity. On the other hand, I agree and understand his point. High school students are falling behind in school, but I don’t see that working at McDonald’s is what causes them to end their future.
Throughout the whole U.S., seniors will be graduating high school in June. Many of these students have decided to continue their education by attending college, or they will decide not to and pursue other interests or get a job. It is often perceived that those who receive at least a bachelor's degree are better off in life compared to those in their class that decided not to go to college. Many people that decide not to attend college end up unemployed and become unable to earn any money. These former seniors will also be unable to experience the social situations to gain a sense of diversity; however, many argue that going to college gives the former senior too much debt and that they will be more successful without college.
It is very common that many high school students hold part time jobs while going to school. When these teens work, they are able to learn and experience life lessons from ethical and moral work. Knowing that school is aways and should be a priority, students should work while in high school because working helps students be more responsible with their lives, help them practice time managment, and also helps students see and experience the real world.

Nowadays in the era of globalization, students are encouraged to have work part-time that will create them to become more experienced in their future, teach them to become more independent and mature in real life. Although the students have enough money to pay their fees and able to accommodate the necessities of life but we totally agree that the working part-time should be encouraged because work part-time can give more benefits to students. According to King and Bannon (2002, p. 2), more than 50 percent of full-time students have jobs and “nearly 46% of all full-time employed students work 25 hours or more.” As students work more, they have less time to become engaged in campus life both inside and outside the classroom. Many students love to have part-time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the students nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the students are working part-time jobs and some have the intention to work. When we are in any fast food restaurant, supermarket or shop, there are must be school students who are working. Besides, students can gain a lot of experiences, students should be encouraged to work part-time because they can learn new skills and learn how to manage their financial properly.
Nowadays, the numbers of students who are always looking for a part time job while they are attending college is increasing every day. According to an article was published in 1998 on The Futurist, the number of students who have a part-time job increased from 5% of students in the 1950s to almost 70% of the students in some communities (“Jobs hurt school performance” n. page). Because of a bunch of fee and cost that students have to handle, working during college seems to be a necessity than an option. The part-time jobs provide not only paychecks but also experience, skills for the students. It is very helpful for the students after they graduate college and look for a real job. Although there are some people who argue that having a job during
