In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, the main character Junior struggles with low self esteem and depression due to experiencing many losses in his life. Additionally, people on the reservation judged Junior for being different and moving to a predominantly white school. It was the opposite of my family. It was the opposite of me” (Alexie, 45). He began comparing himself to the white students, which negatively impacted his mental health. Junior realizes that his identity is divided between his Native American heritage and his new life at Reardan, but he doesn't feel like he belongs in either place. He faced bullying both at school and on the reservation, which took a toll on his self-confidence and made him feel insecure. Junior is forced to balance the various parts of his identity, which contributes to his struggle with mental health. Furthermore, losing several of his family members caused Junior to experience depression. While visiting his sister's grave with his mom and dad, Junior thinks about all of the deaths in his life. “It all made me cry for my sister. It made me cry for myself. But I was crying for my tribe, too. because so many of my fellow tribal members were slowly killing themselves and I wanted them to live” (Alexie, 173). Losing his grandma, his sister, his dog, and Eugene pushed Junior into deep depression. Not only was he grieving his family, he was grieving the tribe as a whole. Holding
