The lack of an enterprise part numbering system is a major deficiency in our company. The data from our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems indicates that our engineers located in various geographical design locations design on an average 300 parts every day. An enterprise Part Numbering System (PNS) will greatly improve the management of the constantly changing portfolio of parts in our company. It will have a far reaching impact in every aspect of our operations including supply chain management, inventory management, part number duplication, design duplication effort, design management, change management and components reuse.
The main purpose of any PNS is assigning a unique number to each of the component we design and manufacture for a specific application. There are three different methods of Part Numbering Systems widely used in the industry.
1. Significant (or Intelligent) Part Numbers
2. Semi-Significant (or Semi-Intelligent) Part Numbers
3. Non-Significant (Random) Part Numbers.
In this report I analyze the merits and demerits of each of the method. The method we select cannot be changed easily in the future. Hence the method we choose will have long lasting impact on our company
Significant Part Numbers
Significant Part Numbers method is the earliest form of numbering system. In this method each character in the part number has a significance describing an aspect of the component such as product line, raw material, color, size etc. And an engineer can identify the details of the component from the part number. For example, the part number for our hydraulic spin on 12AT/50AT Series filters will be constructed shown in figure 1.

These codes guarantee the quality of work for customers and also make sellers to keep the quality higher than a certain level. This can encourage the customers to spend their money wisely. It effects economy in positive ways. This also make people to do their job conscientiously.
The idea is that the designer first establishes rules and relations by which design components are connected to minimize the time and effort consumed in modifications, and to provide multiple solutions that could not be reachable by traditional methods. The parametric approach has been studied and analyzed by numerous academics and designers (Araya, S., 2006, pp.11-12; Gane, V., 2004, p.54; Hudson, R., 2008, pp.18-19; Llabres, E. and Rico, E., 2016). Most of them coincide describing it as a series of phases, which increase in the level of detail and precision, as they involve from preliminary concept to construction. Herein, the parametric design process starts with Design Exploration, in which background data and design problems are determined, including the design objectives, variables, and constraints. The second phase, Design Development, includes possible solutions for design problems and manipulations of design instances. Generation of alternative solutions are reviewed and evaluated in the Simulation / Evaluation phase, to satisfy project goals, and previously built constraints. However, this vision generates an overlapping problem between the marketing department and the product development department. The marketing department, among other duties, is responsible for the identification of new opportunities and also to assure the development of new products. Unless these activities are extremely well coordinated with the product development department, there will be misalignment in the strategy of the EPD.
