Power can change the world. And Parliament is where power sits in our nation. So to me, parliament is my chance to change the world. We live in a world where most of us have grown wary of power. And for good reason. We have seen it repeatedly abused, and maybe even felt the stings of oppression. So it comes as no surprise to me that that the phrase we most commonly associate with that word is “Power Corrupts.” We are told implicitly that only those who do not want power are deserving of it. Yet, this strong aversion towards desire for power leaves me with several questions. Is power inherently bad? If power is only given to those who do not want it, can it ever be used effectively? Who is a qualified candidate to wield it? I don’t believe …show more content…
But those with good intentions, who fight honestly, deserve a voice and their own chance to wield power. And in our society, that means democratically. This is where parliament comes into my life. Parliament is the seat of power in Canada. It is a place where decisions are made on behalf of the citizens of this nation, and from which they can be implemented. Parliament is the place that puts power in the hands of every Canadian. It’s an opportunity for all of us to be involved in changing the world. What I love about parliament is this: Only those who want to be there, on the political frontlines, are there. Only those who have proven to us, the people, why they should be there, and why they deserve it are there. They choose, and are chosen, to be the everyday guardians of our free society. And it is in the hands of ordinary citizens like you and I that such a great responsibility is placed. This speaks not only to the goodness of democracy, but also to the importance of a well constructed one. Our legislature and senate create one such government, and it is one I am always proud to call …show more content…
But I haven’t told you why. As a fundamental principle, I believe power is meant to be used to do good, and that it can be. And I want to be part of that. When I wrote that sentence, it felt completely unextraordinary. Of course I believe power should be used for good. Don’t we all? There is nothing special about my revelation. And I think that superficially, we all have that same belief. Yet when it comes down to it, so many of us have lived so long with cynical attitudes towards power, that we have totally lost faith in its ability to be used for good. Well I haven’t. I want to become a leader to improve the lives of those I serve. I want power because it can accomplish the change I want to see in the world. Without power, I am a dreamer hoping for someone to fix things for me. With power, I can be the one realizing the dream of fixing things myself. It has always affected me deeply to see terrible things happen, and have no way to stop them. It has always hurt me to watch others suffer, and be able to do nothing but pray that those in power can see it, and will stop it. In those moments I am acutely aware of exactly how powerless I
Contrary to popular belief, power does not give a person everything needed in life. Power gives people an illusion of a perfect, ungrueling life which- news flash!- is probably the total opposite of what power actually bestows upon people. Within The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes is mistreated with due to abundance of power Monseuir Villefort has, causing Edmond to later seek power to avenge for the mistreatment caused to him. Almost everyone in the book either loses or gives up their power in the end, thanks to Edmond. Viva la Vida, similarly, depicts the story of Louis XVI possessing immense power and then being deprived of the same power he once thought was going to be in his fist forever.
In consideration of how power functioned in both the Crucible and the Holocaust, a tend of how an individual can use power to control, influence, benefit themselves, and also protect themselves from attacks can be seen. Human Nature compels us to gain power because of want, but once we have the power we will inherently use it to influence others because of the need of the individual to have their ideas agreed with. Power can either make a leader great or make a whole society or movement corrupt. Lessons can be learned about how to effectively use power to properly initiate change and make a positive impact on the world.
Power is a very interesting thing to hold. Many good-natured men have been destroyed by power and turned away from their morals as a result. When giving a man absolute power, it’s ingrained in the human brain to take it to a new level. This ideal is present in every type of government, regardless of whether it’s a dictatorship or a government supported by autonomy. Modern day government suffers from this power hungry greed.
When a person is in power, situations arouse where they can acquire anything by lying, bribing, conning, or stealing. With these in mind anybody in power could easily become a powerful foe.
Power. It is defined as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Throughout time, certain individuals have acquired power in their society as a way to govern and keep order among their community. Power is not a new concept; it was used in the past by many emperors, kings, and queens, and is still being used by presidents, prime ministers, and dictators. Although, it has been used to further progress societies into what the world is like today, not all power has been used for the best of mankind. But what goes awry to make power turn corrupt? In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is illustrated how power can turn corrupt, when authoritative figures, who possess power, abuse it for their personal gain, rather than for the common good of the society.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
Power is both a good and evil thing. With power, a person has the potential to change the world. With power, a person’s words would be so influential, that anything would be possible. But when a person uses power for evil, it could possibly provoke the most horrible events imaginable. One person who used power for evil was a character from the movie Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith created by George Lucas. The characters name was Chancellor Palpatine. In a span of about fifteen years, he was able to manipulate the political system of the Galactic Republic so that he would come to power. With various events such as the Clone Wars, he gained more and more power as Chancellor, so much so that the only thing that the Chancellor feared was to lose his power.
"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it" [Lord Acton, British Historian]. It is human nature that the more power one desires, the more corrupt actions they have to commit to attain power. Power is the ability to have control over people and/or things. People who are powerful can, and in most cases will, create an illusion of anything they want you to see about them. This illusion can make people blind to their true intentions.
Power is like alcohol or drugs, it’s an addiction and it’s hard to quite it and then there is this fear of losing it. John Steinbeck once said “Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts…Perhaps the fear of a loss power.” What this quote means is that when someone has power they are not corrupted but once they feel threaten about losing power they would do anything to keep it. That’s when they get corrupted because they are blinded by the fear and are capable of doing anything to keep it and have more power. Some examples for this quote would be to a novel title Animal Farm by George Orwell. Also it can connect to the universal theme of power and loss and finally it can connect to a history by the
Power allows people to do anything they want. They can use it in different ways, they can tell people to obey them, they can use it to hurt someone they hate, and even rob. They can also use it in a positive way, they can help people and do a lot of good things with it.
In conclusion, the concept of power is something that has been around for as long as there have been people. And it will continue to be a part of society for as long as people
All people have power, some people are just more powerful than others. Having power is the ability to create change. Examples of power being used wrongly is during the French revolution, and the residential school crisis. During the French revolution, two examples were shown of people abusing their power. King Louie XVI raised taxes so that he could buy things that he and his wife Marie Antoinette wanted, and took away rights from the third estate. In the residential schools crisis, the teachers, priests and nuns had power over the students and abused the students in different ways. Superior people take away the rights from those who are below them, but they end up corrupt.
Power can have the persuasive action in undoing the moral ethics of one’s character. This can be seen throughout history, such as World War II and proven by the actions of Napoleon in the allegory, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. As Lord Acton said “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In history what was viewed as a villain or wrong doer is never the same as the perception. A leader does not begin wanting to do wrong, they start with the best intentions, but power is a tricky thing, showcased in Animal Farm as Utopian ideals but with failed practices.
Although Parliament does not usually make law, it has the important role of scrutinising Bills. This involves close inspection and proposed amendments made by both the House of Commons and the House of
Power is the ability to make people say and/or do things. It is the ability to get whatever you want. Power is necessary in any society, otherwise all would break loose; leaders must be established. When taken to an extreme, power is not good. As Lord Acton said, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." An example of this is Adolph Hitler from Germany. He thought that he could not be stopped and that rules did not apply to him. By being given absolute power, he altered the government. No one attempted to stop this in the German country, because of his con...
