There are many reasons that parents should get involved in their children’s school. Students who have concerned and involved parents tend to get better grades. When a parent asks questions about homework and assignments, supervises to make sure that they get done, and even helps with homework, it is more likely that assignments will be completed and handed in on time. Another factor in grades is attendance. With a low attendance rate, assignments will be missed, and the student will get behind in content as well. Parents who do not get involved in the school might not know that their child is not attending on a regular basis, or even care if their child goes.
When children are first starting school, or transitioning from pre-school to elementary school or elementary to middle school, the transition is easier when parents are involved. If a child is unhappy about being in school, but their parents volunteer in the school, the child will see their parents there and be less upset because they will not be separated from them. For whatever reason, if a child is nervous or simply misses his or her parent, seeing the familiar face in the hallway or just knowing that they are in the building is comforting and makes the transition into school easier.
Along with parents helping with homework and supervising that projects are completed, giving support to a child will make them more likely to pass from grade to grade. Without parent involvement, unless a child is self-motivated to go to school and do their work, it will be difficult to pass to the next grade level, and in time, graduate. When students see that their parents are involved in their school, it shows them that their parents care about their education. This sets a good example for the student, and they are likely to model their parents and believe that education is important and beneficial. This is especially true when students see their parents volunteering in their school. In order for a child to see their education as something important, they have to believe that their parents feel the same, especially at a young age.
Reasons Parents Don’t Get Involved
Sometimes parents do not get involved in their child’s education for a completely different reason than not caring.
Parents may have bad communication skills. If they were able to take this class, that may be different, but not requiring this class just passes this on to future generations.

The baby, however, ended up dying in the jail right before Good was hung. Osborn ended up dying in jail from a long term illness she was fighting. Tituba on the other hand confessed that she saw the devil, and claimed that she had accomplishes in helping the devil against the Puritans. Since she confessed all that happened to her was being put in jail for life. Others who were accused included Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse who both were upstanding members of church and the community. Sarah Good’s four year old daughter was also accused. The United States has many mediums to offer for entertainment, football being one of them. The aggressiveness of the sport often lands it in the spotlight. Linebackers are one of the most aggressive positions on the field. The linebackers are never the heaviest nor the most athletic people on the field, but in my opinion, they should receive more credit for their responsibilities. This may seem a little biased because I have played the position, but I had to establish a great work ethic to even be able to be a linebacker. Growing up, I could only look up to those who played the position until I was able to become them. A great linebacker comes with expectations of someone to have discipline, mental and physical toughness, and great agility.
Most adolescents in today’s society are faced with a whole new set of risks and dangers compared to previous generations. It can almost be said that there is no safe place for teenagers these days between all of the new technology and society as a whole. There is a very broad range of dangers and risks that adolescents can engage in and most of the time, if an adolescent engages in one then he or she will engage in other ones as well. According to the text book, the five main adolescent risk behaviors are “antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, drug misuse, alcohol misuse, and sexual behavior that risk pregnancy or disease”.

Parent involvement was a much larger issue in public schools. I think this shows it often is not the parent’s fault they are not more involved. Financial motives often can be cited by parents who don’t attend their students’ events. Involving parents with school activities will benefit the school parent and the child. Teachers will have more help and will know the children closely if the parents are involved. Children feel happy and secure to see their parents around and it makes them confident too. We can start the involvement by inviting parents as volunteers for story reading and school outings. The importance of parental involvement is stressed in Lev Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory which states parents, caregivers, peers, and the culture at large were responsible for developing higher order functions. On the other hand, parents will also have a sense of inclusion in their child’s development process. Parents will share more family time and bonding with their young kids which supports the child’s psychological needs
Parent involvement is one of the most influential aspects of student motivation. The parents are the initial teachers of the child before the child goes to school and encounters education through a teacher. If a parent is completely engaged in the learning process with a child, there can be growth between the child and the parent simultaneously. The parents set an example for the child, so that the child understands that help is in the classroom and at home. Alma Wright, a first and second grade teacher, believes that parents in the classroom are a good way to stimulate children. She says, “Their active participation is a positive influence. The school is open for parents to share their talents and motivate their children” (Drew, Olds, and Olds, 1974, p. 71).
A lot of children have two main educators in their life; their parents and their teachers. Parents are their first educators, the majority of what a child learns in the first few years of their life is taught by their parents. It is only when the child starts to attend an early years setting that they start to learn from another educator. Both parents and teachers continue being a major influence on their children's learning all throughout school and for the rest of their lives. The parents and the child's school both have important roles to play in the child's education and should therefore work together as a team. Parents can get involved in many different ways such as; getting involved with the school itself by helping in the classroom or supervising lunch and break times, or for those parents who work in the day and cannot find the time to help at the school they can get involved by; reading to their child at home, assisting with homework and other learning activities, teaching them songs or nursery rhymes and letting them help with everyday tasks like cooking, baking and chores. This can be categorised as: Involvement of parents in the school life or involvement of parents in supporting the individual child at home.
Parental involvement promotes the social growth of a child. Children whose parents are involved in their education have many advantages. They have better grades, test scores, long-term academic achievement, attitudes and behavior than those with disinterested mothers and fathers (Gestwicki, 2001). Parents becoming involved in their child's schooling creates extra sources of social constraint to influence the child's behavior (McNeal, 2001). For example, parents talking to their children and becoming involved in the school conveys a message to the child of education being important. Parents should be talking with your children's teacher and letting her know about your family. The more she knows about your child, the better she will be able to connect with your child.
In the reading it brings up how most parents are only contacted by the school when it is something bad. This is not how it should be. Teachers should be sending home good news notes to the parents praising the students for their hard work in the class. Schools also need to be welcoming to the families and provide workshops to assist in the parent’s knowledge to allow them to help their children with their schoolwork. Having the parents involved and aware of the things that are going on in the classroom and the school are great ways to build that relationship and to enhance the student’s academic achievement and
