Parenting Styles and Children's Development

There are several parenting styles which guide children throughout their life. These parenting styles can be either good or bad and this will have an effect on the child; either a positive or a negative one. This essay investigates the parenting styles from which emerge questions about the role of the mother and the father. It also focuses on the ways that either too much mothering or too much fathering might have an effect on the child’s identity later on in its life.

What is good parenting style and how should parents act? Good parenting style shapes a child’s character and helps the child become a decent person of good manners. It is found that in order for this to occur parents must also model the types of behavior that they want their children to acquire. Sometimes they don’t even have to use specific techniques; it is just the way they act around their children. Their parents are their “role models” and they will act as they do. For example, in order for children to be respectful, parents must “show respect” (Jet magazine, July 19, 2004 v106 I3 p.28). If they want their children to respect their parents and also different people they must first start respecting their own feelings. They must “show kindness” (Jet magazine, July 19, 2004 v106 I3 p.28). If they want to have kind children who respect the people around them, they must be kind at home so their children can see how their parents act and act in the same way. Furthermore parents must “Be positive” (Jet magazine, July 19, 2004 v106 I3 p.28). They should never speak negatively about either things or people in front of their children because then they would also do the exact same thing.

...cause the child needs both of its parents and not just one. My research for this essay showed that there are more similarities between families of different cultures than differences. Furthermore it showed that children who have homosexual parents do not inevitably become homosexual as well. On the other hand too much mothering or too much fathering might have an affect on the child’s identity later on in its life.
