There has been a long conversation between multiple communities regarding the effects of parents on the development of their children. Psychologist and socialist around the world believe that the development of minors is strongly affected by the behaviors and parenting style of the parents. A person’s parenting style is known to affect many aspects of a child’s everyday life including, weight, health and personality. Every one of Maxson’s kids held a different mother, a practice that was not much respected during these times. Maxson’s daughter was the youngest of his three children. Maxson’s daughter was also the product of an affair he had during his marriage to his wife Rose, the mother of his second son, Cory. Within the movie, Fences, Maxson has a scene where he depicts what happen to him during his first son’s childhood. Maxson’s first son is Lyons, and he was not present through much of any of his childhood. When Lyons was around 4 years old, Maxson got arrested for robbery and was sent to prison for over ten years. Each child that Maxson has, is a representation of the different levels and battles faced in his life. With each child there are different parenting styles used, resulting in different outcomes of each child. Within the world of education and psychology today, there are four different known parenting styles, uninvolved, permissive, authoritative, and authoritarian. Permissive parenting can be another for of parenting that leads to harmful results on the child or minor. Another term for permissive parenting is indulgent parenting. These parents have a tendency to be tolerant while attempting to maintain a strategic distance from any confrontation with their child. The advantage of this parenting style is that they are normally exceptionally sustaining and cherishing. The negatives, be that as it may, exceed this advantage. Hardly any guidelines are set for the offspring of tolerant parents, and the principles are conflicting when they do exist. This absence of structure makes these children grow up with minimal self-control and poise. In the play Troy was raised by an unloving and abusive father, when he wanted to become a Major League Baseball player he was rejected because of his race. Troy even served time in prison because he was impoverished and needed money so he robbed a bank and ended up killing a man. Troy’s life was anything but easy. In the play Troy and his son Cory were told to build a fence around their home by Rose. It is common knowledge that fences are used in one of two ways: to keep things outside or to keep things inside. In the same way that fences are used to keep things inside or outside Troy used the fence he was building to keep out death, his family, and his disappointments in life while Rose used the fence to keep those she cared about inside and help them bond.
Fences is a play that deals with boundaries that hold people back and the trials and tribulations of those who try or wish to cross them. The characters are African-Americans in a time before the civil rights movement, living in an industrial city. The main character, Troy Manxson, is a talented baseball player who never had the chance to let his talent shine, with restrictions on race and his time in jail as the main obstacles that held him back. He is now hard working and loves his family. However, he tends to exaggerate and has his faults, most prevalent a wandering eye when it comes to women. His wife, Rose, is younger than him and loyal, but she may not have known about all of his faults when she married him. At the beginning of the play, Troy has a son from a previous marriage, Lyons, and a son with Rose, Cory. Also appearing are Bono, Troy’s drinking buddy, and Gabriel, his brother.
The theme of August Wilson’s play “Fences” is the coming of age in the life of a broken black man. Wilson wrote about the black experience in different decades and the struggle that many blacks faced, and that is seen in “Fences” because there are two different generations portrayed in Troy and Cory. Troy plays the part of the protagonist who has been disillusioned throughout his life by everyone he has been close to. He was forced to leave home at an early age because his father beat him so dramatically. Troy is an uptight, prideful man who always claims that he does not fear death, the rest of his family is more laxed and more content with their lives than Troy is. He feels that he does not get to enjoy his life and that his family is nothing more than a responsibility. Getting caught up in this feelings, Troy cheats on Rose with a woman named Alberta and fathers a child with the mistress. We all lead lives filled with anxiety over certain issues, and with dread of the inevitable day of our death. In this play, Fences which was written by the well known playwright, August Wilson, we have the story of Troy Maxson and his family. Fences is about Troy Maxson, an aggressive man who has on going, imaginary battle with death. His life is based on supporting his family well and making sure they have the comforts that he did not have in his own childhood. Also, influenced by his own abusive childhood, he becomes an abusive father who rules his younger son, Cory?s life based on his own past experiences. When the issue comes up of Cory having a bright future ahead of him if he joins the football team, Troy refuses to allow him. The root of this decision lies in his own experience of not being allowed to join the baseball team due to the racial prejudices of his time. He does not realize that times have changed and because of his own past, he ruins his son?s life too. His wife, Rose, also plays a big part in the way the story develops. With over three hundred million Americans and over six billion people worldwide parenting skills are essential to maintain a healthy society. Parenting involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identified parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Of the four parenting styles, two remain on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well each style has its own advantages such as; acceptance by peers with commonality. Child rearing for most parents is an evolving set of skills. It could be said that, with any style of parenting, there is no explicit set of rules for every situation, and what works for one child may not be effective for another.
The first type of parenting style is called authoritarian. In this parenting style the parents are the boss. They make strict rules and they enforce them. They focus more on restrictions than a loving relationship with their child. They believe it is their job as parents to catch their children being bad and punish them. These parents use external control on their children instead of taking time to tell the kid what they did wrong and why they should not do it again. Something these parents do not realize is that they do not catch their kids being good. Authoritarian parents are firm and unsympathetic. Authoritarian parents love to use discipline.
In summary, the two stories have several importances on the literal life of the people. First, they have a positive touch on the family, basically the relationship between parents and their children. Secondly, the story also revolves around tradition and culture. According to the authors, they assert that culture and tradition has a major influence on any given society. Arguably, the culture is not all that can propel one to his or her bright destination in life, on contrary, culture cannot pin one down to form a huddle to the anticipated life target when the will is positive. In fences, the major narration is built on the hopelessness of the characters while when it comes to everyday use; one can clearly see a path for hope pertaining all the party. The above themes are clearly brought out for the benefit of the readers.
August Wilson created many themes throughout his famous play, Fences, but the most prominent one is the relationship between fathers and sons. The three father-son relationships introduced in this play seem to be complicated or difficult to understand. However, it is clear that the relationships built between Troy Maxson and his son Cory, Troy and his other son Lyons, and Troy and his own father are not love-driven. The parallelism of actions, events, and tension amongst each of the father-son relationships in the play illustrate how the sons try to break free from the constraints the father has set, yet in the end, these attempts seem to be pointless as the father leaves an everlasting effect on the sons, ultimately creating a cycle of actions
The style of parenting with which children are raised can profoundly affect their social development, as well as their abilities to deal with life situations as adults. Parents who follow the permissive style of parenting have very few rules, no consistent limits, and more often than not give in to their children.. In a permissive family, the children are in charge.
This parenting style is very undemanding but also very responsive. Permissive parents tend to shower their children with love and affection and involve themselves in their lives. However, they tend to have few to no rules and limitations and therefore have no expectations for their children. They exert a lax pattern of parenting in which they make relatively few demands, permit their children to freely express their feelings and impulses, do not closely monitor their children’s activities, and rarely exert firm control over their behavior (Shaffer & Kipp, 2013). This type of parenting style is not the most beneficial but also not the most negative. The fact that permissive parents make an effort to be involved is a good sign however, the lack of structure is not entirely the best parenting technique. They seem to focus more on being their child’s friend then being their child’s parent. Because of this, they raise children with less favorable developmental outcomes.
