Social Media Social media can be defined as the use of online networks to convey ideas, send messages, and create and share content in order to participate in the new age of social networking. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are three of the better well known and most commonly used social networking sites that allow us to stay interconnected with the world and everyone around us by different means. However social media is impacting our lives in a tragic way that I find will soon cause chaos around the world. We have become so dependent on social media that we have downloaded their apps which gives us the freedom to look at them any time we want, but by doing this we have eliminated any social or communication skills we might have had.

I find this appalling due to the lack of communication going on in the average household. How do parents know what is going on in their children’s lives if they themselves are too busy checking Facebook or Twitter to see what the new gossip is or if anything interesting happened that they need to know? I would love to think that a family would be closer together and more knit tight if they would set a limit on the time spent looking at social media not only for the parents, but also for the kids. The drama we see being put out there is overcoming us and leaving us wanting more and more, therefore taking away any spare time we might have had. Our families are being separated without the communication we could be giving to each other and the time we could be spending with them. Not only is social media excluding us from our families but it is also taking away the time we could spend hanging out with friend or making new friends when in a place we do not know. One day a big chaos will arise and social media will be the cause of downfall, and honestly I do not think it could happen soon
In fact, now it is impossible for us to be separate from the social media since it plays a necessary role in our generation. We have to remind that it is not the fault of social media that sometimes it can be abused, but it is ours. We should not make a generation where a mom is too busy with chatting with friends on Facebook and cannot help her daughter with her homework, or one is spending all day stalking on his ex- girlfriend. [D23] That is too miserable. And yet, we should not just throw the social media away from here because Facebook and Youtube give us so much joyful moments of others and mine. We always should be conscious and cautious about how we use the social media and balance it well. That is all.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
