For the Paleolithic people hunting and gathering was a way to survive. With that, I believe that the animals were sacred. They were a gift that gave them the ability to be able to have clothes, and food. Even the bones were used as tools. That is why I believe that after every animal was killed there was a ceremony to commemorate the sacrifice. It was an honor to be able to have the animals there as a resource. With the painting of the people on the wall they are shown in a circle. A circle of people is normally when a gathering is occurring, usually for a special event. I see it as the men would go out and hunt all day. While the women and children are taking care of the home. For when the men come home it will be ready to thank the animal
for the sacrifice. Then after that the men and women begin to prepare the animal. Using ever part of the animals’ body because there were many uses for the animal. For the paintings, I believe that the women were the ones to create them because they could do that as a part of decorating. It would serve as a part of the ritual of all the animals that they killed. This was another way for the people to pay respect for all that it provided for them. There were all types of animals on the wall, this would be honoring nature. Not just what they killed. Horses were used in everyday life, to be able to go to hunt. This was there form of transportation and help with gathering. All the animals on the wall that were painted on, are there to respect what nature has to offer and also give tribute to what it provides for the people. The people were very grateful of what it had to offer.
This paper will discuss relative points and insights relating to sculpture of the Paleolithic era, specifically the Venus of Willendorf, through the essays of Christopher Witcombe.
Myths were used to unite the people of the tribe, giving them a way of life, and a peace of mind. Armstrong states “The hunters feel profoundly uneasy about slaughtering the beasts, who are their friends and patrons, and to assuage them this anxiety, they surround the hunt with taboos and prohibitions. They say that long ago that animals made a covenant with humankind and now a god known as the Animal Master regularly sends flocks from the lower world to be killed on the hunting plains, because the hunters promised to perform the rites that will give them posthumous life” (Armstrong 4). Although the hunters feel uneasy and even fearful of killing their “friends”, they still follow through with it because of a myth telling them that the Animal Master will forgive them and even sent more beast for them to hunt if they follow a certain ritual before killing their prey. Without the ritual this type of action will become a simple murder without a reason, this action than hinders the mind psychologically and starts to deteriorate it, while treading the path of insanity. The myths and rituals allows these people to kill wild animals without conferring a mental breakdown by sugar coating their inhumane actions with meaning to the survival of the society. This type of myth allowed the ancient civilization to realize the undeniable truth of life where sacrifice is a necessity to the progression of another
Ever since the Pleistocene era, human societies have expanded rapidly, developing innovative ways to defend their territories and migrate across the land. Consisting of an aggregate of humans living together, these societies became more powerful as time progressed by consuming more meat (megafauna). Supporting this development, the more mammals that humans would eat, the more protein their bodies would absorb. When humans consume high amounts of protein, they develop stronger muscles, which leads to the stimulation of brain activity. By way of further explanation, amino acids from the proteins are used to make the neurotransmitters that allow your brain cells to network and communicate. Amino acids that come from the protein you eat are the building blocks of your brain’s network. They can excite or calm your brain as well as nourish your brain throughout its lifetime. Also, they allow the body's own proteins to be used to support life, particularly those found in muscle. This led humans to develop intelligence and create a wide variety of tools. These tools are what the early hominids used to develop their culture into that of hunter-gatherer-fishers, making humans a more dominant mammal within that ecosystem.
As you can see, it is full of animal imagery. My friends, we do not usually have so many animal references in our works of art, so let me explain them. The bears are symbols of their animal or animal-human ancestors (Cothren & Stokstad, 2011, p.849). It symbolizes the power and presence of the ancestral figures. By following the principle that is cultural relativism, one can also determine that no culture truly surpasses another culture, and that each society has key differences that are important to its culture and location. This is a method that can also be seen in many intriguing films from this semester, one in particular being The Emerald Forest. Throughout this essay, this film will be analyzed around one character who greatly represents what it means to truly immerse oneself into a different culture to gain a new perspective, and many key terms in anthropology will be explored through 4 different films from the semester.
While digging in the far reaches of the African outback, now know as the western part of Kenya, archaeologist Bozo excavated a site that revolutionized the thoughts of the scientific world. At this site they found many interesting artifacts and paintings that included proof of an early civilization. At this time scientists are calling this civilization “Pontu” after one of the paintings suggested that a pontoon was used for transportation across Lake Victoria, one of the adjacent lakes.

Prior to living in homes build to with stand the test of time, growing food their food source, and raising animals, humans were nomads who followed their food source around and were hunters and gathers. Although it took many years, from 8000B.C. to 3000B.C. for humans to go from hunters and gathers to a more common day life as we now know it, the result is referred to as the Neolithic Revolution the begins of human civilization. As the people of this time began to settle down and they began to both farm the land and domesticate animals for the better of the community. Along with the development of these communities as for the first time began to create social class among the many different roles they played in their community. Because the people of this time no longer roamed around some of the first signs of technology began to appear around this time as well.
After looking at the art belonging to the Upper Paleolithic period Handprint at Pech-Merle, Dordogne, France it is safe to say that artists had a sense of ownership of their art. In the piece there were found several hand prints, which was a common thing for the Paleolithic art (Pech-Merle, 29). Based on a different work of art presenting in the book and during class lectures it is clear that the social hierarchy was not defined very well back then. It seems that people were all doing the same thing collectively as a community, looking for resources to make food, tools and some art. The cave paintings are a significant source proving how art was a part of everyday life routine, it was a hunting ritual. According to the textbook “Henri Breuil, believed such hand prints may have been made during initiation ceremony”(Pech-Merle,30). Perhaps, the hand prints on the painting indicated the spiritual connection between the hunter and the animal.

Embarking on a journey of anthropological fieldwork will undoubtedly include a plethora of setbacks. At its foundation, fieldwork requires developing rapport with the native people in order to gain access of genuine knowledge pertaining to the specific culture being studied. Subsequently, social communication between the researcher and the native people is a key component to the entire process; yet simultaneously it is a root of the many problems a researcher can encounter while in the field. It is no secret that the cultural background of the researcher can often highly contrast the culture he or she enters during fieldwork. This initial cultural adaptation one must undergo while doing anthropological fieldwork is what many in the realm describe as culture shock.

Hunting was an indispensable part of their daily life because animals were the primary source of food and tools. Humans have long been evolving physically and mentally in order to survive on earth. They have evolved their physical attributes as well as their intelligence to properly prepare them for the changing environments on earth. Since the Old Stone age, human intelligence has allowed them to continue to adapt to various tasks that were commonly performed by the Old Stone age people. These common behaviors and lifestyles of the prehistoric times would eventually help the human communities to survive in this dangerous world as a successful species. Most of our everyday activities and common behaviors such as living in homes, having a nutritional diet, inventing new innovations, and particularly surviving as a group, are derived from the lifestyles of the Paleolithic people. Although there may be some differences between the aspects of life from the prehistoric and modern times, much of the features of how people lived back then have played a significant role in securing the survival of humanity today.
Before the existence of an advanced civilization many steps of evolution is required. The complex human society is one of the best examples there is. For example the revolutionary steps from the Paleolithic and the Neolithic to the Modern World is filled with wonder and awe. However, the ascents involved is not that extraordinary; if it is being closely observed.
