Why is it that as Americans, we claim to be a progressive society when our country’s laws can be very regressive when it comes to human rights? As times become increasingly difficult economically for many new families, our “right to happiness” can become over run by financial hardships, making paid parental leave a must. Although it is important to stay on top of work, many new mothers find themselves out of work after having a child. Without a source of income for new families, this situation can cause major stress not only on the new parents but on the child as well. In the case of low income families, leaving work can create even worse problems, and in most cases they can’t afford unpaid leave due to the fact that they might end up losing their jobs completely. Already 47.3 percent of United states workers have minimum wage jobs(“Bureau”). The low income for most families leaves them with no choice but to return to work early in risk of not being able to pay their bills the next month. In states without parental leave, nearly 25 percent of mothers required 749 dollars in public aid one year after giving birth. For mothers in family friendly states, only 10 percent of new mothers and families needed assistance during the first year, the average being only 358 dollars(“Chicago”). The study done at Bryn Mawr College shows that women on paid leave are far less likely to need tax payers money than women without paid leave. Where does the money come from then? In states like California and New Jersey, it's part of a small payroll tax which is only part of 0.08 percent with a maximum annual contribution of 24.24 percent from businesses(“Business”). That gives both men and women up to six weeks paid parental leave after having or adopting a child and at two thirds their average salary. In cases like New Jersey and California, this investment either stays neutral for companies bottomline, or even saves companies money.
