When Internships are seen on television, they are often portrayed as persons running to get coffee for bosses. An internship equates to an apprenticeship, they exist for the purpose of guiding a student to learn and master the skills needed it be successful in their careers. They can either be paid or unpaid, depending on the provider of the service. Yet, often times the means and borders of an unpaid internship are abused. Therefore, all internships should be paid because it provides the intern with the experience that they would receive in the workplace of their career, competition in the workplace would be eliminated, and it would ensure that the time of the intern is not being wasted. The point of an internship has definitely shifted over decades. It is very similar to indentured servitude, although that meaning has changed over years as well. The dictionary meaning of indentured servitude is “a person who signs and is bound by indentures to work for another for a specified time especially in return for payment of travel expenses and maintenance” (“Indentured Servant”). With internships, someone works for a person for a certain amount of time in exchange of what should be expenses or maybe even a job. A type of internship that is true to its title is federal work-study (FWS). This “gives students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience while pursuing a college degree” (Owen), and earn money that can be used to contribute toward paying for their degree. Depending on the school and the major/career being pursued, the jobs can be either on or off campus. An example of a FWS job is a teaching assistant. They are usually in graduate school, and their job description consists of helping “faculty members with classroom instruction, exams, record keeping, and other miscellaneous projects.” (“Graduate Teaching”). This provides the experience for someone who may want to become a professor in the class their assisting in. Everyone in this field had to go through the internship phase of this process. Older doctors who went through an internship that was not paid can argue that if they had to go through it, why can’t the future interns go through it as well? Well the answer to that is, it simply is not fair. Its 2017, times are changing. Going through this particular field can be quite expensive, and while the interns contribute a lot of time, energy, and skills, it needs to be compensated for. “Take This Internship and Shove It” by Anya Kamenetz is about the declining state of jobs for new college graduates or current college students. Anya Kamenetz is attempting to prove that internships, particularly unpaid internships, are part of the problem of new graduates finding employment in their field of study. Kamenetz is also trying to prove internships are harmful to the job market in general. Kamenetz describes internships as “fake jobs” and states internships cause low wages and decline in young workers being part of a union. When an employer can hire someone for free he or she is more likely to do so instead of spending company money on a paid employee. Employers get away with these practices because with an already troubling job market, new graduates worry about finding jobs in their field. Colleges are either requiring students to participate in an internship to graduate or are pushing that internships are the gateway to careers. Kamenetz points out that two-thirds of college students are receiving loans to help pay for their education and it is harmful to the individual to work for free when that time is essential to make money to pay for living and school expenses.
Student-athletes should not be paid to play and the amateur status should remain as it has for generations. Student-athletes have not matured enough at this stage of life to be able to handle all of the additional responsibilities that would be forced upon them with the professional status. Put the almighty dollar aside and let students-athletes be student’s first, amateur athletes second, allowing them to grow and mature into tomorrow’s effective leaders.

In college sports athletes perform on the big stage in front of thousands of people every week and receive no money for their performances. These athletes receive no money for their performance because it is made illegal by the NCAA for any student athlete to receive any type of reward for their performance. In the last five years there has been a heated debate on whether the NCCA should start paying college athletes. People responded to this situation with mixed views and opinions. The first reason that people have shown views against pay for play is because scholarships pay for college athlete’s school either fully or partially. Secondly people believe pay for play would create jealousy and hypocrisy on college campuses between administration, college students, and other civic workers. The first reason that people have been convinced about pay for play is overpaid college coaches who make millions for the little work they do. Next the NCCA, Colleges, and merchandisers profit millions off the athletes every week without any of that revenue given back to the athletes. Next people believe scholarships are ineffective or incomplete. Lastly people believe the corrupt system of the NCAA is a reason college athletes should be paid. The NCCA has proposed plans to enact a pay for play plan including adding a two thousand dollar stipend for student athletes but this has been on hold for now. In society for student athletes to succeed in college and college careers the NCCA must pay them.
Now that we live in different times, we see different things within the school life and the workforce in comparison to the old America. Nowadays, scholarship and internship opportunities are presented to students; if they do not have money to pay for school necessities, they do have an opportunity to earn it through their merits and skills, just like Harry. There are also nonprofit groups, foundations, and clubs and organizations which main goal is to help assist students go further in their school career. Today, the working individual can be assured that their rights are protected, and if they have been violated, they can find a union that will fight and demand justice. If someone wants to go further in life, one can count on the help of good people/friends.

The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. I know for a fact, however, that I reached satisfaction with both of my goals at this internship at MKI and know whole-heartedly that I did everything in my power to exhaust my resources in
ability to establish a professional work ethos as well as developing skills needed to maintain a work life balance. Through all the experiences gained from this internship, it has provided skills such as multitasking in a fast paced office setting, keen organizational skills, and improvement on communicating in a professional workplace as well as the ability to handle situations as they arise.
