As a reader I never thought I would read a book that made me root for the german side of the war. In the end I realized Germans and the Americans were both right in the war, which I never thought of before. The author of the book, Erich Maria Remarque, did a great job of making a pacifist novel and makes you think through the entire book about who was in the right. I think it was a good book near the end but the beginning was a little slow. In the end I was rooting for the germans to win because I got attached to the characters of the book. Remarque did a great job with the book all together. I would recommend this book to people who want to learn about war and why it is bad. I always wondered why people would think that war was a good thing
This book was a good read for me, but I also read book reviews to help me keep track on what I am reading. These book reviews just made a better understanding of what I was reading.
Spencer rushed into the joining the war without thinking about what he would do if he survived and came back from the war because he dropped out of high school so he would have struggled if he got back to even get the simplest job. You also see this when Spencer is talking to his dad who from personal experience severed in World War I, he said that many people go to war not knowing the consequences that are to come. You also get a glimpse of this in Dieters perspective, when he gets his first taste of action and he stands up shooting, trying to be a hero but schafer ends up bring him down and lecturing him over how he should never try to be the hero because that how you end up dead. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone and i thought it was a fantastic book. What I liked most about it was reading from two different perspectives and how those different perspectives met through the
what kinda sucked about it is that they dragged out to the end. which made you know what's going to happen when ending came. that's why it was so dull cause I was on the last page and Sam still hasn't been killed yet so I knew right away what was going to happen. Recommendations: I would recommend this if you want to study the sight affects of the war.
I found this book to be a rather interesting read. I enjoyed how Levathes researched this book and wrote it to try to explain about this specific period of time and how it is very non-fiction.
War has been a constant part of human history. It has greatly affected the lives of people around the world. These effects, however, are extremely detrimental. Soldiers must shoulder extreme stress on the battlefield. Those that cannot mentally overcome these challenges may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Sadly, some resort to suicide to escape their insecurities. Soldiers, however, are not the only ones affected by wars; family members also experience mental hardships when their loved ones are sent to war. Timothy Findley accurately portrays the detrimental effects wars have on individuals in his masterpiece The Wars.
People should read this book because it gives people a different understanding of World War II. Although World War II is covered in most history classes, it is not as covered as the US Civil War or World War I. Hitler’s Last Days goes into great detail about the key events in World War II that led to the fall of the Third Reich. As this book has many strengths, it also has its weaknesses for the readers. If a reader is not really interested in history or World War II, this could seem like a non-stop and boring book to read. It does have a lot of information that could be tedious to read if not interested. Other than that, Hitler’s Last Days is a fantastic book and should be read by most high school students interested in World War
My overall opinion of this book is good I really liked it and recommend it to anyone. It is a good book to read and it keep you interested throughout the whole book.
Did you like the book? would you recommend this book to others? Why or why
All quiet On the Western Front, a book written by Erich Maria Remarque tells of the harrowing experiences of the First World War as seen through the eyes of a young German soldier. I think that this novel is a classic anti-war novel that provides an extremely realistic portrayal of war. The novel focuses on a group of German soldier and follows their experiences.
Many people say that the metal of a man is found in his ability to keep his ideals in spite of anything that life can through at you. If a man is found to have done these things he can be called a hero. Through a lifelong need to accept responsibility for all living things, Robert Ross defines his heroism by keeping faith with his ideals despite the betrayal, despair and tragedy he suffers throughout the course of The Wars by Timothy Findley.
In “War and Massacre” by Thomas Nagel, Nagel argues that there are limits on what can be done to an enemy even its for the sake of overall good. He believes that such an idea is grounded on the principles of Absolutism, where morality is determined by the action itself (deontology). This is contrary to the view of Utilitarianism, which relies on the premise that Morality is determined by its consequences (Consequentialism). Although could one in fact generate such a moral structure around war? Do the ends justify the means in War? Through identifying with a real-life example, I will look to expand on Nagel’s account where an action taken by a country in war would be prohibited even if it were for the overall good.
The Struggles in life is something everyone is faced with whether it is physical, emotional mental or personal struggles. These struggles are capable of shaping an individual’s personality and outlook on life. Timothy Findley’s novel The Wars, shows that struggles lead to the character’s ultimate inner struggles, outer struggles and self-discovery. War exists in a person’s physical and psychological aspects. In The Wars, Robert Ross goes to war and fights a personal and physical battle.
The author also stayed true to his word, and did not force his own opinions or interests into the book. The author left it up to facts to prove his own feelings, and did not mettle with history in order to preserve his own feelings. He showed Bismarck as a great, but not perfect man. In closing, I would recommend this book to anyone with a strong interest in Germany, and someone who wanted to know more about the man who helped create it.
The characters in the novel The Merciless by Danielle Vega are hiding many secrets, which at first makes them appear very realistic. The plot revolves around a young girl named Sofia, who has recently moved to the small town of Friend, Mississippi, as a result of her mother being assigned to a new army base. Sofia is a very realistic character, who's conveyed feelings and emotions about starting a new school and making new friends are very relatable. She quickly befriends three girls, who Sofia is surprised about, as “Girls [she’s] known who look like Riley don’t make friends with the new kid”(Vega 9). Riley, Grace and Alexis are the preppy, popular girls at school who invite Sofia into their friend group from the beginning. The girls
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, it takes an in depth look at individuality and the thought process with and without outside control. It makes you think about how indirectly the government controls small details around you. What would happen if the government wanted to take control of you completely? How easy would it be?
